For non-crypto people, when one says crypto - their mind tend to get filled terms like scam, silkroad, rugpulls, drugs, illegal, money laundering and what not.

So there is this article which argues, the term 'crypto' should be replaced with 'web3', as crypto word has many negative connotations attached to it.

The first internet was Web 1.0. Later Web 2.0 was created. Just that web 2.0 is centralized. Web 3.0 was proposed so people can be able to use the internet in a decentralized way. Like having a decentralized social media, decentralized in everything that make use of Web 3.0. This has nothing to do directly with cryptocurrencies themselves, it is about the Internet not cryptocurrencies, but the creation of bitcoin is resulting to people having more ways about decentralization.

To be honest I don't like the term to be changed just because there are many scammers are trying to take advantage of it, even before the term cryptography is very famous in the mid 90's in the software field. I expect the change is coming from the people because with the change in the name still scammers will try to loot money with their ideas so nothing will be changed unless people identify the scam and real decentralized projects.

Even if people are changing the term into web3, then soon it will also be immediately filled with scams, and many negative connotations yet to come. Changing the term won't solve the issue, it's way better to educate them. As a way of saying, even the word crypto is far known as cryptography, I also wonder why were crypto being used and connotated as cryptocurrencies.

AFAIK, If we take a look at the root meaning, it comes from greek which the word crypto means hidden, so just by saying the term "crypto", it is rather incomplete.
