Hello there,

I need help with my cold wallets. I have a multi-bit wallet and I know its 18-phrase seed key and password, but I know the password, but when installing the multi-bit program, 5 BTC appears in it, but the installation takes days, but it is not completed. I waited for almost 1 month, but the installation is not completed, I tried to open the electrum wallet with the seed key, but I could not do it. There are more than 5 Bitcoins inside but I can't access it. Can someone with knowledge on the subject help me? I can see the BTCs inside, but I can't access the platform because the Blockchain cannot download and synchronization cannot be provided. I would appreciate if someone knowledgeable can help.

The first important thing, do not send your seed or wallet file to anyone, no matter who contacts you via email or private message.

As far as I know, if you enter a seed from MultiBit in Electrum, you will not be able to recover the wallet because they are not compatible. The first solution is to use iancoleman (offline) and, according to the instructions, extract your private keys, and then import them into Electrum (more info here : https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/53419/how-do-i-import-a-multibit-hd-wallet-with-seeds-into-electrum)

Another option is to find a wallet that is compatible with MultiBit seed, and the information says you can do this with a BRD wallet, but only with 12 words seed. I'm not sure if there's another compatible wallet - so you have the first option.

Make sure you have a clean computer and use iancoleman offline.

Unfortunately, I will not connect to your computer, nor should you allow it to someone else - especially strangers. I also don't want to jeopardize my reputation in case you don't actually have those 5 BTCs, and there is even a suspicion that I may have stolen them in the process.

You need :

Unplug your network cable, and disable your WiFi network connections

Input your Multibit seed words into the BIP39 tool. Select BIP32 tab, and MultibitHD for client.

Scroll down and view the addresses generated. Verify the addresses match the addresses in Multibit, starting from the earliest to latest.
Copy & paste all of the private keys from the private key column. Yes, you will have to freakin' copy & paste like 20-100 keys depending on how much you have been using Multibit! (Oh it get's worse!)

These are only the original keys. Whenever you send a payment, you get change to a 'change address'. Those are not listed! If you have sent any payments, you need the change address keys also. To get the change address keys, read the following.

3. Once you get your private keys, you need Electrum - https://electrum.org/#home

Start Electrum, create a new wallet, and select Import Private Keys. Wait at the input box.

When the wallet is synchronized, you should see an updated balance.

This is a very strange way of using Ian Coleman. Much better would be to enter the BIP32 Derivation Path as m/0' and then just copy the BIP32 Extended Private Key and import that in to Electrum. It will generate all your addresses without having to copy and paste every key individually, and it will also generate your change addresses which the method in this link does not. An even better way of recovering the MultiBit seed phrase would be to just put the seed phrase in to Electrum, tell it is BIP39, and then choose the appropriate derivation path.

OP, try doing this:

• Open Electrum and create a new wallet
• Select "Standard wallet"
• Select "I already have a seed"
• Enter your MultiBit seed phrase
• Click "Options" and select "BIP39 seed"
• Select "legacy (p2pkh)"
• Change m/44'/0'/0' to m/0'

Those addresses should match the one from your MultiBit wallet and allow you to spend your coins.

It must be m/0' and not m/0 without the ' symbol. If you miss out this symbol it will generate completely different addresses.

I would strongly advise against giving out your phone number and asking people to contact you privately. Anyone who does is almost certainly trying to steal your coins. Anyone who can help you should do so on here publicly.

We are trying to help you in the safest way possible. If you have a total stranger connect to your computer remotely, then you will almost certainly have your coins stolen. Don't do this.

Have you tried my instructions above? Import your seed phrase in to Electrum, select BIP39, select legacy, and change the derivation path to m/0' (and not m/0 as you said in your reply)?
What happens when you type in your seed phrase and select BIP39? Does it say "BIP39 (checksum: ok)", "BIP39 (checksum: failed)" or "BIP39 (unknown wordlist)"?


In the interests of transparency, OP has now PMed me inviting me to talk to him on Telegram or WhatsApp, which I have obviously refused (mostly for his own safety but also because I do not use either of these platforms and have no intention of doing so). I say this because I don't think it is outside the realms of possibility that OP will start messaging random people his seed phrase. You should NOT do this! It's safe to assume anyone who sees your 18 words can and will instantly take your funds! As long as you don't compromise your wallet, you don't have to rush things. Take your time, learn to do it on your own, and don't take unnecessary risks!

Did it tell you "BIP39 (checksum: ok)" under the box where you type in your seed phrase, or did it tell you something else?

The next thing to do is go through the same process of entering your seed phrase and selecting "BIP39" in "Options", but on the next screen press the "Detect Existing Accounts" button and see if it finds anything.

I know people have had problems with the seed that was generated with MultiBit HD before when they tried to enter it in Electrum. I am referring to this post from @HCP from 2017, where the conclusion is that it is best to make a transaction directly from MultiBit HD to Electrum.

Of course, the OP can't do that, but it's weird that with everything he's already done there's no result, maybe Electrum isn't synchronized, or those 5 BTC do not exist at all...

This post was from before Electrum allowed you to specify a custom derivation path when importing a BIP39 seed phrase and only used m/44'/0'/0', which is different to what MultiBit uses. Now that you can specify what derivation path to use, if you enter m/0' in to Electrum as I explained above, it will recover the same addresses from MultiBit provided you have the correct seed phrase.

Indeed, if you follow the instructions on the other link you gave above to import the seed phrase in to Ian Coleman, and then choose MultiBit derivation path, it will derive addresses starting at m/0'/0/0, which is exactly the same derivation path and same address you will get when you follow my instructions to put the seed phrase directly in to Electrum and derive at m/0', as Electrum adds /0/0 to the end of whatever derivation path you specify.

You can test this yourself with any BIP39 seed phrase. The outcome is identical, but you can make the process both easier and safer by skipping the additional steps of using Ian Coleman and transferring individual private keys.

The possibilities here for why OP cannot recover his coins are that he is not following the instructions correctly, his Electrum is not synced, he has the wrong seed phrase, or he is mistaken about how many coins he owned. I do not think MultiBit ever provided the ability to extend a seed phrase with a passphrase, so it cannot be due to this.

First of all, if anyone is wondering if there are 5 bitcoins, I left my telegram and watsam number in the messages above. it continues and stops by itself. now I did everything properly as in the instructions but the addresses do not match my wallet is multibit core but I am multibit hd sec, can it be caused by it?(I tried using that web site to generate xprv BIP32 Extended Private Key. So you enter your seed phrase in to Ian Coleman, select "MultiBit HD", and it generates the correct addresses at the bottom of the page? If that's the case, then just copy the individual private keys for the addresses you are interested in and import them individually in to a brand new Electrum wallet. Seems like this is going to be the easiest thing to do since you can't work out the derivation path in Electrum correctly.

The BIP32 Extended Private Key generated from Ian Coleman with the MultiBit option selected is at m/0'/0, whereas Electrum needs to it to be at m/0'. If you wanted to import the Extended Private Key, then you need to change from "MultiBit" to "Custom derivation path", change the derivation path form m/0'/0 to m/0', and then import that new Extended Private Key to Electrum. But I would just copy the individual keys as I said above, since the different derivation paths seem to be causing you confusion.

I think that the easiest way is what o_e_l_e_o said: if you managed to obtain the correct addresses, just import the corresponding private keys and you're good for start. You'd need only the private keys for the addresses you have funds on.

And if it's indeed such big money there, you should consider buying a hardware wallet and sending your coins to addresses generated by the hardware wallet.

If you did find the private keys of the wallet, like other users told you, import them into Electrum. Follow this[1] guide to know how to do it.
Since English is not your native language, I also suggest that you browse that guide using Google Translator service, which you can see here[2]. Just select your native language and it'll be probably easier for you to understand and follow.
