Hi there mining experts,
I'm planning to build a mining rig using six GeForce RTX 3070 TUF GPU and trying to find out what is the maximum power output need to be made available by the PSU. I have noticed the manufacture recommended PSU is 650w but in this forum lot of the expert discuss about it's TDP being 220w.
I was hoping if someone could tell why the TDP is vastly different to recommended PSU wattage.
Thanks

A rtx3070 can take up to 140watt when mining Ethereum, mind you wattage depends on the algorithm you are mining some algorithms take more watt power for example ravencoin draw more power than ethash algorithm so I think it's better to go with big power supply like 1600 watt or 1800watts to be on safer side

well 6x gpu rtx 3070 rigs at maximum efficiency using 1600w psu platinum should be fine, better using 2000w just in case some spike happen dont buy cheap psu, when thats six gpus costly at current market and psu still msrp or even lower, get platinum or titanium psu

20% the safety threshold at least, usually 50% give the best efficiency. However buying a 1000 watts psu and use 500 watts only is not good regarding cost, 800 watts is all right 80%, buying a 2000w and use up to 1600w is all right, in your case 6 x 3070 real tdp is around 200w each, so 6 x 200 = 1200, minimum should be a 1500w psu.

Normally a RTX 3070 non LHR would only take 140-150 watt mining Ethereum so in total that would be 900 watt plus 100 watt motherboard and components in total 1000 watt would be the power consumption.Keeping in mind that you should never bypass the usage of 80% I would recommend as a minimum a really good brand like Evga or Corsair PSU at 1300 watt Gold or Platinum efficiency.
If your cards are LHR then they consume more power so you need an even bigger PSU.

The PSU recommendation is for a typical PC with one GPU. You're building a mining rig so it doesn't apply. Use the GPU's TDP, multiply by the number of GPUs, add 200W for the rest of the rig, then add another 20% for the recommended PSU.

Thanks, it's good to know the power consumption depends on the algorithm. I always wondered how TDP was calculated.

Looking hard for a non LHR RTX3070. Hopefully I'll be able to find one. They are also very expensive which may need longer time to reach ROI. Thanks for giving couple of PSU brands, it certainly makes it easy when looking to buy one given there are lot of brands out in the market.

There are a lot of algorithms and overclocking options for this video card, from 130 watts to 220 watts. I would recommend you 6 * 220 + 100 = 1400 watts. If you do not want to use server power supplies, then it is better to buy 2 ATX power supplies of 800-850 watts gold each, because they have enough 8-pin cables.

1000w PSU for ETH mining should be fine, you're drawing 700-800w at the wall. I run 4 3070 + 1 3080 off a 850W Seasonic and it only pulls 680w at the wall. You don't need 1300+ watts for only six 3070s.

You need to respect the gpu's tdp here, although after set it right and you know how much the algorithm will consume then yeah you can work on that, for example, gpus start at default and you have to work from there and at default gpus consume a lot of power, it takes time to find the right voltage and clock for a gpu, so if you dont have a strong psu then that psu might blow worse case, or best case scenario it will just turn off because the load is greater than what it handles. So reason people recommend a higher psu wattage is for safety measures. Anyway, I dont see this setup using less than 1000 watts even if very underclocked and undervolted if we take efficiency and benefit at best for this system.

I have a small rig with rtx 3070ti and gtx1660 mining ETH and my power supply is just 650w, this 3070ti takes 135-140w when mining and the 1660 takes just 50watt so that's roughly 200watt, with motherboard risers and CPU I'm sure it's taking only up to 300-400watt from wall so yes 650watt power supply is sufficient

Not same for all algorithm, just imagine you switching to ravencoin algorithm tomorrow due to ETH stopped been profitable again your 850w power supply won't be able to keep up and if it does your power supply will die very quick

rtx 3070ti consumes from 150 to 220 watts depending on the mining algorithm. And the gtx1660 consumes 10-20 watts more from the wall. Not every power supply has enough 8-pin connectors to connect two video cards. If your 650w PSU is of good quality, then that's good, but in most cases these PSUs are not used in mining.
