I've been using Uber quite a bit lately. But instead of continuing to use my credit card as payment, I'd like to find a way to pay with Bitcoin or crypto currencies in gerneral.

So the question: does anyone know of a service/giftcard provider or another way to securely pay with crypto at Uber?

I am referring to rides in Central Europe (France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany).

I got Bitrefill and Coinsbee has Uber top-up service but they don't seem to support the countries you mentioned. Just found a Coinbase that might be able to do this. I've never used it before, it looks like you have to go through 2 redemption processes (BTC > E-giftcard > Uber Credit). Just visit their page for process details here.

Yes, I already checked out Bitrefill. They offer Uber giftcards for Europe. But, on the one hand, they are currently not in stock, on the other hand, the reviews are not really good. Someone had problems with redeeming the giftcard and it seems that Bitrefill does not buy the giftcards directly from Uber but through some middleman in Italy or Spain. Because you have to contact them if you have problems with the giftcards.

As far as I know Bitrefill purchases ALL their cards from a 3rd party. There are a few large providers that act as the middle man. It's one of the reasons that when you go to a lot of different physical stores they all have the same set of gift cards. At least here in the US.
As for the cards not working, the biggest issue I have with Uber / Uber Eats gift cards is that for some reason Uber forces you to have an active working credit card on the account and will do a test transaction every once in a while. If it does not work, gift cards are unusable till you add a different credit card.

Amazon and a few other merchants are the same way.

Although your not directly paying with bitcoin, your best bet(besides methods already mentioned by others) would probably be to use a bitcoin debit card. I guess it's a good temporary solution for now if you're willing to submit AML/KYC.

I'm not sure, but as far as I know crypto.com is probably a reputable service that serves European peeps.

That may be, but it does not apply to Amazon, for example. I bought an Amazon gift card at Bitrefill some time ago. Since I've had bad experiences with another provider before, I wrote to Bitrefill beforehand and asked if they buy the gift cards directly from Amazon. Customer service answered in the affirmative and wrote that they do it directly through Amazon's API.

Which country was this for? I imagine that the process is very different depending on your jurisdiction. The point Dave was making regarding having a working credit card still applies, though. The Amazon US gift card page (https://www.bitrefill.com/buy/amazon_com-usa) says as much, and if you don't have a working credit card on the account you top up with the gift card, the account will be locked. I checked a bunch of Amazon cards from other countries and they all have the same warning.

I read what I presume is the same review you did which is giving you hesitation. I see the user successfully redeemed two codes before having problems with the third. I've had a problem with Bitrefill only on one occasion (not for Uber or Amazon) in that the voucher link they provided me with led to a 404 page. I emailed them, they contacted the third party seller for me, sorted it all out, and had a valid code for me within 24 hours.

I would be tempted to give it a go with a small value voucher, say 10 euros, to try it out for yourself.

Maybe I am wishing for something too much but you might get lucky enough to get a driver who accepts bitcoin as payment and you can pay directly.

I would also vouch for bitrefill but since you already found the lack of stock there, I can understand your pain. The only option I would take is this was my case, was sell at the exchange some bitcoin and then use that to pay the driver. Of course this would be done before I start the trip, just like filling on in change before taking a bus or taxi.

It sucks that some altcoin projects tried to get ride-hailing based projects but failed. But it might be worth sending additional emails to Uber CEO for accepting bitcoin in future. I will pray to Santa for that this year. Cool

At this point, even with much improvement of crypto adoption, it is still unpredictable how and which channels and medium would really connect crypto in our societal operations. I think that personally contacting companies, like Uber for this matter, could possibly make a greater impact. Otherwise, third parties that converts and transfers crypto to other currencies with the last resort. After all, the receiving end or party would be the determiner if crypto would be associated with their operational services.

I would be very careful of this, depending on your country/jurisdiction. If you hire an Uber driver who says he will accept bitcoin, and you organize a private deal outside of Uber to pay in bitcoin, then you and the driver will not be covered by any Uber insurance should you be in accident or similar. You would need to check if the driver has their own private insurance outside of Uber to offer such rides before accepting.

It sucks that some altcoin projects tried to get ride-hailing based projects but failed.
I have never seen the point of such projects. No one in their right mind is going to buy and hold a specific coin which can only be used for taxi rides, another coin to pay for parking, another coin to buy their coffee, another coin to pay for gaming, and so on. They are going to hold one coin - bitcoin - and use it for everything. Much better to spend your time and energy convincing Uber to accept bitcoin then making some stupid shitcoin, but I guess that doesn't make shitcoin developers any money. Roll Eyes

I don't know if it might be possible in other countries, but here in Central Europe (Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany) you can only pay with Uber via credit cards, Paypal and a few more electronic payment methods. Even payment in cash is not possible. Therefore, the Uber driver himself will certainly not be able to accept Bitcoins, even if he wanted to. The situation is perhaps different for a normal cab company. But you have to be very lucky to find a driver who can handle and accept Bitcoin at all.

I get what you mean, and I feel this will differ as per demographics, you can hail a cab with the option of paying in cash. The driver just needs to tap on that button once the ride ends from their end that the customer has paid and it is done. So when this is done, the rider and the driver can agree to transact in bitcoin.

Insurance is not really an important factor from where I live, it is a point of concern, but people here are more interested in reaching on time than anything else. Many dont even know that an insurance even exists there.

but I guess that doesn't make shitcoin developers any money. Roll Eyes
Thats the point, they dont see money in it and they never based it on a proper vision.

Yeah I think like I said above, this is a demographic issue, not all cities have Uber with cash as an option to pay.

True, but this again goes with the "increase adoption" movement of bitcoin. I will pray to Santa for that too. You all should join in. Cheesy

Even payment in cash is not possible. Therefore, the Uber driver himself will certainly not be able to accept Bitcoins, even if he wanted to.
It wouldn't be a case of an Uber driving accepting bitcoin for an Uber ride. Rather, the driver would turn up to collect you, you would ask if you could pay in bitcoin, you would cancel the ride request via Uber, the driver would take you somewhere not as an employee of Uber but as a private driver, and you would pay them in bitcoin. Nothing would go via the Uber app other than your initial request which you then cancel. Some Uber drivers also work as private drivers, but not all, so as I said above, you would want to check that your drive had insurance to do so.

Many dont even know that an insurance even exists there.
If your Uber driver crashes the car and you are injured, most people would expect contributions towards their medical bills or compensation for loss of work or similar. If your driver does not have insurance, then you will get none of that.

This is a creative and interesting way. But on the one hand, the chance that an Uber driver will go for it is relatively low, since he would have to have a bitcoin wallet ready, among other things. Also, I would like to make sure that when I book an Uber, I can pay with bitcoin, because the possibility also exists that he does not accept bitcoins, I cancel the booking and then I then get a negative rating. If this happens more often, it could be a problem in general to find an Uber driver at all in the future.

-snip-
Yeah, it's a very impractical way to use bitcoin, and as you say you could run in to other problems in the future trying to use Uber again. You would have to be prepared to frequently just agree to pay in cash/fiat when the driver says no to accepting bitcoin.

If you don't want to use a gift card or a crypto debit card as suggested above, then I would think your best option is going to be to look for another taxi firm which do accept bitcoin, at least until such a stage that Uber (hopefully) start to accept bitcoin themselves.

I haven't used much Uber lately, but I'm generally interested to know where your vouchers/giftcards come from? Do you cooperate with the respective providers (e.g. Uber) directly or do you have an intermediary? I'm asking because in the past I've repeatedly read negative posts about purchased but not valid vouchers here in the forum (not from you, but from other providers).
