I read about a cryptocurrency hack recently where they were able to steal tens of millions of dollars.
With that kind of money involved, I'm surprised this doesn't happen often.  Good thing that people are so honest.

Uh.. it does happen quite 'often': https://cryptosec.info/exchange-hacks

And sometimes, exchanges don't even need to be honest. Most of the time, exchanges' wallets are public, hence we can see if the funds are suddenly sent out.

I’m not sure if you’re joking or not when it comes to “good thing that people are so honest”. Because sadly that is certainly far from being true, especially in the “cryptocurrency world”.

Hacks certainly happen quite often in a number of ways. I stress to all my friends , clients etc when they bring up that they own bitcoin, take it off the exchange and properly put it in to safe cold storage!

You probably are new to crypto because it actually happens all the time to centralized exchanges not just to the person's wallet but also the poorly coded defi platform. So many hacking happened in the past probably some are not reported. There will be more that will happen later which you would suspect is a planned scam like an exchange or a casino claiming to be hacked but eventually shuts down and users don't get thier coins back.

Scam is more in my area, once they get your coins... They are never giving it back... And they will do this in a way you can't investigate it

Many exchanges were hacked in history and not all people were compensated by exchanges after hacks. Small exchanges will be collapsed because they don't have enough reserve funds and don't have too good income from trading fee in order to cover for compensation if they do it for customers.

Some exchanges are scam and use hacks as their exit ways.

Where you got the news from? Hacked wallets of individuals are way more common, but the reporting is rare. Very few people want to make it public that they lost coins due to their lack of secure methods or simply ignorance - humans dont like being called "fools".

If you are talking about exchanges getting hacked, then once every few months a certain exchange does get hacked and this has happened every year or so.

And then comes altcoin projects that end up with their vaults getting hacked or something similar. Not that rare I would say.

Good thing that people are so honest.
Yeah, about that, they are not. Since it is so easy to remain anonymous and still commit crimes here, it is rampant and the lack of anti-money laundering only makes it more difficult to trace. But they do get caught and often face charges, provided the money involved was big enough. For smaller retail bitcoin investors, you guys are out of luck for the legal route usually, so better secure your own devices and wallets.

There are too many types of scam in Cryptocurrency. Many of scammers scam innocent people and many of companies scam people. All scammers use new strategies to make scam and they try to feel you trusted then they cheat. And companies scam says invest in our project and get 2x 3x profit after listing. Then they run away from project.

Am not sure if what you are telling here because hack/scam happens every often specially in exchange when this is the main target of those bad elements .

though we are trying to expose many yet there are still others that becoming victims as greedy attitude is what they are having.

You must have seen by most of the posts that hacks happen often with crypto exchanges only some of them are maybe not as publicized as others. Even though I know there have been hacks in exchanges but truly didn't know that there have been this many hacks even some exchanges have been hacked more than once. This is a serious issue and I just hope that these exchanges will try and build stronger security walls. Now I see that a couple of more exchange hacks will be added to this List for 2021.

These cases is often happen in crypto industry since everything is crypto is digitalize and no system is safe so we couldn't protect our wallet 100% because no system is safe.
All we should do is "reduce" the chance of being hacked by doing some multiple authentication to our account, never click any random links on the internet and keep our assets safe by using ofline wallets and any other way to protect our account.

Wait who are honest ? and is this really not happening often ?  Grin

I'm afraid you are missing a Lot in this market.

Hack and Scams are actually happening commonly though it has not been posting here in forum always.

there are many areas where crypto is the target of those scammers and hackers and even exchange cannot Hide that completely .

Be ready and do not give complete confidence because you might become one of the victim in future.

which cryptocurrency hacks are talking about? the most recent exchanges I've heard that were hacked this year were AscendEX and Bitmart.

With that kind of money involved, I'm surprised this doesn't happen often.  Good thing that people are so honest.
if you look at the link mk4 shared you'll see the list of exchanges that have been hacked since 2011. seeing that several exchanges are being hacked every year I guess it is safe to say that it happens quite often.

There are indeed some hackers who return the stolen results, but that's only part of many hackers. Usually this is done by some hackers who do try some hacker expertise and weaknesses of a site. I don't know if they want to be recognized and get a name but this is one of the proofs. In 2021, hackers are stealing tokens on the Poly network. Maybe you should read this : https://www.reuters.com/technology/how-hackers-stole-613-million-crypto-tokens-poly-network-2021-08-12/

Another troll? Or a “newbie” who bought an account? I have read the history of your messages. After your topic that the Earth turned out to be flat, I no longer think that your source, from which you get your knowledge, really contains the correct information.
OP, friendly advice, don't be naive. With such a mindset that there are many decent guys around, you can inevitably expect some kind of deception

If for personal or people, when you are careless, you will lose your money. There are more than thousands way hackers or scammers wil aim for our money. Maybe it is not exposed like when exchange get hacked but it is already too many times. So we must really careful with our assets and don't let our guards off like not put 2fa in our wallet for example.

Anything that is online is always in a danger of getting either stolen or corrupted, people don't really take care of small details, most often it's their fault and these things happen quite a lot. It's not about the amount of money involved, it's also about the security of the whole system perse, how you access the site?? If you access it through mobile phone and you decided to download a software which is not safe, they can very easily transfer your data, phishing is quite common as well. There are so many things that can go wrong with people operating cryptocurrencies wallet and not really choosing the right one. Safety is very important!! Your choice and your steps have a huge impact.

Are you referring to this story?
Hacking a centralized exchange tends to involve either exploits of weak spots in their security or inside jobs. As others mentioned, it's not really about honesty because addresses are known, and also because an exchange has no motivation to cover up the loss because in this case they'll have to reimburse all of it to their users, whereas it's a fairly rare thing for exchanges to do. Given that exchanges aren't safe, and your money there isn't truly yours because you're not the only one who has access to it, it's usually advised not to keep big amounts of money there. I follow this rule, but many people keep hodling on exchanges in hopes that the worst won't happen to them.
