If I'm being blackmailed by somebody who asks me to buy bitcoin and pay it to their account why can I not report this to bitcoin?

Because Bitcoin is not a company, nor a company's product.
Bitcoin is decentralized, it has no CEO and so on.

Bitcoin is a decentralized form of money. And since it's money, you should report the blackmail to ... the police.

if this is about you having a video jerking in front of a phone then just ignore it. there had been lots of people receiving those emails they may have even cc on it or sent to many.

why you can't report it to bitcoin? not sure what you mean by that but there is no one to report to. but tell you when you send some BTC to his wallet, you will probably receive back a meme image of the gigolo of the family guy.

Bitcoin is not a company, there’s no one person who controls it. That’s the whole point of it, decentralized payments. Bitcoin is asked for in blackmail / ransom scenarios because it’s difficult to track and it can’t be “charged back” after sending it like credit and debit cards can. Depending on what type of blackmail is going on you’re probably better off ignoring it or reporting to authorities. Keep in mind many fake phishing emails try and extort people for bitcoin, often stuff like “here is your email and password, we have video from your web-cam masterbating to porn, and if you don’t pay us in bitcoin we will release it online”..crap like that is just bs.

If I'm being blackmailed by somebody who asks me to buy bitcoin and pay it to their account why can I not report this to bitcoin?

The same reason why you cannot report it to Mr Dollar or Mr Yen. If you want - go to police.
But first check what is the reason. In case it is encrypted disk - you may try to recover it on your own. Aha- and if you really want to pay, at least try to negotiate the price.

if this is about you having a video jerking in front of a phone then just ignore it.
Also: put a sticker on your camera. Even better if you disable the microphone for privacy too, but that's difficult on phones.

If I'm being blackmailed by somebody who asks me to buy bitcoin and pay it to their account why can I not report this to bitcoin?
If the blackmailers would ask for dollars, would you report this to dollar?

For what it's worth: if it's the standard spam, it's not really blackmail, it's just spam. Ignore it, reporting it to the police isn't going to help you either. Unless it's something personal, but that's not likely.

I'm curious: OP's username looks like they're just using Bitcointalk for spam. Or they're dumb enough to get more spam on their real email address.

Send him a PM.

People put stickers on cameras in their laptops, then they take their smartphones (with 2 cameras and multiple microphones) and go to toilet for "scroll down" sessions...

Bitcoin is the only coin trusted to be decentralized in the crypto space hence, issue of a bitcoin payment as a form of ransom anf the payment being traceable to the physical owner of the address is impossible. Same rules that applies in legit payments still applies in the fraudulent transactions too. Though the government haven't backed bitcoin for a currency, they would listen to you over some blackmail and direct you on what to do. Mind you, payments often doesn't end the blackmail, its best not to play along.

Bitcoin is decentralized and just a currency online but anonymous and decentralized. There's no way that you could do some report and you do have that wrong idea.

This might sound personal but if that blackmailing wont affect your entire life then better to ignore but if this one would mess up your entire life then
you wont really have any choice but to pay.

So its a personal kind of choice to make and since its your money and your life then decide which one would be good for you.

What's there to open a spam e-mail. If you've been blackmailed with some of your personal data, then you need to worry about it and look for a solution. When there is a blackmail e-mail without anything related to you, whats the need of opening it or analysing it. Just ignore and move away.

In some cases the e-mail lead to phising sites that resembles the original website. If we enter login credentials, they easily take our accounts into control and empty the funds. So, we need to be very careful with each and every activity done on the cryptospace.

You should do that because you'll never know who is watching and listening to your fap sessions. Especially if you are using windows. Windows is not safe. Windows itself is a spyware/malware. Bill Gates collects all of your data. Use linux on all your devices because it is open source and safe. You don't even need to use any antivirus software with Linux.

The case here is of cyber crime and it should be treated as same not involving btc because the case is of blackmailing and they are demanding something in return from you so simply report it to the cyber crime branch along with all the details of them and they will surely help you.Suppose they demand some property or fiat then whom should you contact? Understand basically this is not any btc related but some sort of ransom similar to cash.So just report it.

LOL ;-)
Yes, all Bill Gates needs are your videos.
BTW: "it is open source and safe" is a false statement. There is no correlation at all. As long as source code is not checked by independent auditors, there could be anything. Last example: open source log4j, which had a critical bug for years.
Android source code is available and what? Plenty of malware and dangerous, phishing applications. iOS is closed, but that problem does not exist because architecture is different (each application lives in their own world, which changes a lot).
So no, there is no one universal solution for all. Each user should use tools he needs, but do it in reasonable way. Using good antivirus system on Windows, like bitdefender does not hurt.
But if one's click on every link he receives, it will not take long time to compromise his data, no matter what system he uses.

You can report it to the police so they can investigate who the person that blackmailed you is. It is not related to bitcoin because they can ask for fiat money for the ransom. Usually, that thing happens if they have something worth for you and they ask you to pay with money.

But if someone blackmailed you and they asked you to pay in bitcoin, you can not report it to bitcoin or the founder of bitcoin (satoshi). Bitcoin is not a company or organization or whatever that has structured membership.

If I'm being blackmailed by somebody who asks me to buy bitcoin and pay it to their account why can I not report this to bitcoin?

You cannot report it to bitcoin because bitcoin is not a person or an entity or an organization.
If you are being blackmailed then it doesn't really matter if it's bitcoin or fiat money. You will have to follow the same procedure in both the cases.
Find out the reason why you are being blackmailed. If it's just a scammer trying to blackmail you on email or phone then you can ignore.
If it's something else then may be you need the help of cops.

You can't report to bitcoin because bitcoin is not a company or institution which you can locate the office of bitcoin.  That is why  if you are doing transactions of bitcoin with anyone you have to be extra careful so that you don't get into any problem.

If I'm being blackmailed by somebody who asks me to buy bitcoin and pay it to their account why can I not report this to bitcoin?

This guy is the CEO of bitcoin.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=3

Send him a PM.

If he finds you worthy, he will get back to you and unhack you.
Satoshi created bitcoin, but he is not in charge of bitcoin.

I would advise the OP to contact local law enforcement if he is being blackmailed.

My general advice is to not pay a blackmail demand as the person can potentially do whatever they were going to do in the future if you end up paying the blackmail.

If your computer is infected with ransomware, your files are likely lost.

Hi ! Bitcoin is a decentralized form of money. And since this is money, you must report the blackmail ... to the police.

From this reply
Because Bitcoin is not a company, nor a company's product.
Bitcoin is decentralized, it has no CEO and so on.

<…>
So if instead they chose to demand a payment in fiat, would you try to report it to your country’s Central Bank? I don’t think so …

The procedure would probably be to report to the authorities in any case, but it would depend on the context of the attempted blackmail, and you really do not provide any details to let other chime-in in the proper direction (as opposed to leaving everybody guessing and hypothesising possible scenarios).

If you really want people to provide their advice, you really should be more thorough depicting the events, and more interactive on this thread.

Because that's obviously a matter for the police. Blackmail is punishable by law and that law is enforced by the police, not by a nonexisting entity that is Bitcoin (it's a cryptocurrency, not a government or a company). In the same way that you wouldn't report FIAT blackmail to your local governmental monetary institution (and there is much more structure there than in BTC), you would report it to the police.

You've received this blackmail in your email? Well, there's nothing you can do about it but DON'T PAY if there are emails blackmailing you and asking you to pay for this xx amount. It's likely that your email has been stored to a list or database and sold to these scammers and they make a story of what you've done for them to blackmail you. I'm guessing that they've given you a set of instructions on how to buy bitcoin and the wallet address where you'll send it. That blackmailing has happened to me but don't believe with their false stories.

Actually you can report to the police.

I routinely get emails saying

“ i took over your computer and recorded you watching porn and pleasuring yourself send me bitcoin” I could report this to the local police and the fbi or not.

Since I have no camera on my pc I know the blackmailing piece of shit does not have me on film.

so I smile and do nothing. I suggest you  do the same

I'm curious: OP's username looks like they're just using Bitcointalk for spam. Or they're dumb enough to get more spam on their real email address.

I believe it is both, and in addition to that the OP is trolling for attention with that spam post. I do not know why someone had to merit his post.

Dude it is Christmas Day and if we can't have some generosity on that day why bother. I gave 7 newbies a merit today Just because it is Christmas.

Oh to the op here is the email I got "blackmailing me"

Now to those that complained he is a spammer or a troller.

I see that both loyceV and Maestro75 have paid signatures.  Hey I used to do paid signatures back in the day. I stopped.

oh purenails.co is uk company and they sell stuff for your fingernails.

and if the op was clever enough to make some money with his name and not a signature he deserves a merit for that.

As it will either allow many to copy his idea or the forum will end up banning member names with an @ in it.

Because Bitcoin is not a company, nor a company's product.
Bitcoin is decentralized, it has no CEO and so on.

Bitcoin is a decentralized form of money. And since it's money, you should report the blackmail to ... the police.

Bitcoin is double edge sword, it has benefits along with disadvantages. There are situations that make you helpless in bitcoin ecosystem . When I was scammed and my bitcoins were stolen from my Electrum, I was helpless as I can't report that to anyone. That's makes me understand that bitcoin benefits came at some cost.

I'm not surprised when it comes to free advertising, people do all sorts of stupid things - even though they don't realize that they're doing more harm than good this way. However, it seems strange to me that a person who runs such a business would reach for such things, and that he thinks that Bitcoin is some kind of company or person to whom he can report blackmail Huh

That’s simply because bitcoin doesn’t have a headquarter nor does it have a customer support team. The only option you are left with is to complain about the matter to the police. Moreover, bitcoin has nothing to do with it and the case needs to be solved by the police in your area.

If I'm being blackmailed by somebody who asks me to buy bitcoin and pay it to their account why can I not report this to bitcoin?
Just avoid it, you won't get any more reply after few days from the person and don't think that you are the only one received the message because thousands of people received such messages in the past even I had 3 or 4 years back. So no need to worry and still if you feel that they can harm you then just take the legal action.

Yeah you are right on that .
Dont know if the OPs name is just for spam or not but looks like the blackmail thing is the same as i have written some years ago in some way.
Its always the same scheme here is the Thread from nearly 3 years ago Report Bitcoin spam (scam) and other coin addresses!

<…> Dont know if the OPs name is just for spam or not  <…>
I'm still unsure on the real intent: On the one hand, the account’s name (/email) is not to be found currently elsewhere on the internet, and you’d think that, were he to be creating the name to give some light to the inferred business, you’d see the same scheme applied in other places too (not that Bitcointalk is a key target either for that sort of business). On the other hand, you’d think that, were he to be really worried about the alleged blackmail, he’d at least comeback to the thread and elaborate in some sort of interactive manner. Beats me …

Yeb that was my first thought about when i was reading the thread and post here , as i noticed it was only the one post in the op he has done a week ago.
If he would be serious asking , normaly there would be a answer here somewhere i guess .
There is nothing to beat you on that and i guess we will hear not again from the User , maybe im wrong but it looks like.

Their is no way you can report bitcoin, Bitcoin is just a currency and I don't know how currency can be reported. If you are being blackmail and the person request for you local currency(fiat), the only thing you can do is to report the person that's blackmailing you and not the currency, the same thing will happen to bitcoin, you can't report bitcoin but you can report the person blackmailing you if you know the person, the person can be reported to your security agency and if you don't know the person, then you will have to look for a way to bail yourself.

If you ever find yourself being extorted, almost always the best policy is to ignore and block and be as boring as possible. Reason being is that if the extorter is a) a sadist or b) a sociopath who just wants to make money they will quickly lose interest in someone that gives them absolutely nothing in response. If they are in it to cause suffering or make money, they will move on to the next person.

That's how it's ought to be.
If you are being blackmailed by someone who asked to buy furniture with your fiat currency.
You neither will report to the furniture nor the fiat currency but the concerned authorities
I believe that is one of the challenged people who live in a country where bitcoin and its activities is considered illegal.

Bitcoin has no owner, it is a decentralized system, A project which was founded by Satoshi, that's still unknown till this day, hence no one is in control of it, so you can not report to anyone. Since we all operate as node

If I'm being blackmailed by somebody who asks me to buy bitcoin and pay it to their account why can I not report this to bitcoin?

Considering that bitcoin is pseudoanonymous and you cannot report any scam experience to anyone but in case of the forum here, if the person involved is a member of the community here and you have evidence to proof his accusation then you can report such user under scam accusation or reputation, but his account on bitcointalk can only be tagged here but not deleted or will your bitcoin be reverses back, bitcoin works perfectly with the blockchain technology such a way that transactions are irreversible, you will have to be careful from been scammed by those that performs escrow service to you, there are reputable decentralized exchanges that are reliable in performing this kind of exchange for you than relying on those you aren't conversant with or trusted.

If I'm being blackmailed by somebody who asks me to buy bitcoin and pay it to their account why can I not report this to bitcoin?

You can report this type of situation to the authorities, like the police, or to organizations that can provide assistance, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States. However, it is not possible to report this directly to Bitcoin, as Bitcoin is a decentralized network and does not have a central authority or organization that can receive reports or take action on such matters.

Since you received the blackmail threat by email, why not report it to your email provider, or your Internet provider?

Do you know the person? If yes then you sue the person in the court of law. Or report him or her to the local authorities for scamming or fraudulent activity. You can't report anyone to bitcoin because bitcoin is own by nobody. It is a decentralized digital currency for exchange of goods and services in other words, bitcoin is an internet money to buy something online. And nobody get it. You can't trace whom you have sent the bitcoin, but you can only trace the address which the public key but the owner is unknown. That is whenever you are dealing with someone on BTC as p2p make sure you know the person face to face or well trusted person. If someone blackmail you after receiving the coins from you then your money is gone. You can only buse KYC to track the person.

My advice for anyone who may be facing a similar problem or have been a victim of a crypto scam, report the case to your local police. There is little chance of recovering stolen bitcoins, so if still in the early stages like OP’s case, I suggest you contact the police immediately. If you’re worried word may get out that are being blackmailed you can call the scammer bluff.
BTW I don’t why this topic was bumped, the OP hasn’t been active here in a very long time.

I know about these kinds of situations, and I think they should try to solve this problem. However, if you ever are blackmailed and don't know what to do about it, you can easily write a request to https://digitalinvestigation.com/blackmail. All you have to do is to insert some information and follow the steps. The best thing is that everything is online, and they care about all the cases they receive,d. I was blackmailed two years ago while in college, and they were the only ones that helped me to get over that period.

This being a resurfaced thread whose case I recall, it does seem more like an attempt to publicize the business through the account’s name, and not much else. At least from a practical point of view, the account had no further activity once the OP was created, and never bothered to come back to provide further details or query any further.

I don't think that's the case, just the data diggers that perform spirit rituals while digging deep into abyss into the in hopes of bringing the long-inactive OPs back from the eternal slumber.

Happens to other threads as well.

If I'm being blackmailed by somebody who asks me to buy bitcoin and pay it to their account why can I not report this to bitcoin?
correct me if I'm wrong , have you been a victim of ransomware? mostly people who where blackmail are people who are files in their computer are encrypted or unable to open unless, you paid them a certain amount of bitcoin, or they are holding a file or something that is very important to you,
you have no choice but to pay, and wish that they will give that once  you pay, if its not that important then format or don't bother to communicate with them.

Then why are you responding to a question that was asked more than a year ago and to a member who hasn't been active for an extended period of time?
