As a crypto miner what would you do if bad weather starts? Will you continue mining or you will off your rigs? Lightening is bad for electronics components isnt it? What if you have them on surge protector too?

My country is the number 1 in lightning strikes, and I use a surge protector
Before that I used to be worried when started to rain, but not anymore, it's important to buy a good surge protector, because there's a lot of cheap power strips with no protection inside

It's cheap and worths the extra protection
I use this one here but I don't know about the models and brands available in your country



In the long run, it's cheaper to buy one of these instead of turn-off your miner in some rainy days

Surge protector is the answers, I used to mine using solar panels but at one time thunder strike killed my inverter since then I wired stronger heart in my home and also better surge protector so this year all those thunder strikes don't affect me

if you go for a surge protector just make sure you get a high quality one with a thick cord. There are a lot of low quality ones out there that cant holdup under the continues load.

Most PSUs have some form of protection but if you got like >$5000 worth of gear hooked up then you should at least invest $50-100 in a decent surge protector.

Especially if you live somewhere, where these are frequent occurrences. Because you really don’t want most of your gear to blow up. Usually what happens is the voltage drops and the current doubles to compensate and you blow a bunch of components.

Back in the day when I'm mining, I encountered several lightning incidents. Not sure what it will become if not because of my surge protector. Also, if you use cable, don't forget to protect your LAN connection as well. In one incident, lightning fried my router and motherboard's LAN port. Luckily, it didn't touch my GPUs. So, I installed two things, one surge protector for wall electricity, and one for ethernet. Never got another incident ever since.

If you have installed a good distribution box in the house and every connection where a computer is plugged in is a voltage protection socket, you should actually be safe!
But yeah when i was starting mining years ago and after i got my power supply from my PC exploded ( It was my one fault ) i was looking more about the electrical things.
Voltage protection sockets on every miner and PC for years now , better to be more careful than not at all.

I also think that lightning is the same everywhere.
If the danger is very high, then such equipment is additionally installed on each house.

It is also more profitable for power companies to put protection on transformers, so that when lightning strikes, the increased voltage goes through the ground.

You don't get it, if thunder strikes it will go from the pole Into the ground, it's called heart rod for homes this will erase the need for home surge protectors, way safer for electrical appliances and other

Something to remember about surge protectors;  the protection rating is accumulative, not a single jolt.  Tiny everyday spikes will slowly chip away at a surge protector's electronics.  Look for ones that have a "protected" indicator.  They will continue to act as a power strip when the protection is gone but will likely not save your stuff from a nasty jolt.  Look it up yourself - Search "surge protector lifespan."  That time will be less if the power grid in your area isn't clean/stable.

When thunder strikes usually hits the Ethernet cable,I am talking from personal experience,the thunder has stroked a few kilometres away and I got my router and NIC card died out.Here thunders are not common but they do come from time to time.We have bought a low power UPS running only the router at the UPS because the Ethernet cable is the weakest point when thunders hits.As for other parts no worries,we use only premium PSU-s like Corsair and Evga and I know they have that short circuit protection built in.Keep your Ethernet cable safe if you use Ethernet as technology to connect your miners to the Internet.

What is to really be worried is the difficulty of Ethereum mining being at 12.23 P at one point during the day which was just 0.00395 for 300 Mhsh of mining power.

Lightning on the other hand can destroy things.....its electrical.

I used to have free tv from 1986 to 2005.

I had a huge rooftop antenna.

I used three ground wires from the tripod base to the ground and I had a large greased copper pipe attached to them

i then drove the pipe eight feet deep into the ground.

This protects the house from a direct hit.

But you need more than this.

In the home in the large power box I have a whole house 🏠 Protector. 

but you need more then this. As we use cable to get internet so you have to ground the cable connection which feeds into the house. I attach it to a ground to that outdoor copper pipe.

I also have  some small spark gap resisters for each eth cable.

We have had a hit on a house across the street 150 feet away. nothing broke.

we had a hit on the transformer on the street. we lost a home-theater receiver  but everything else was saved.

Certainly in case of bad weather a voltage overload, short circuit can happen we have to be careful it can be dangerous, however i do not turn off my rig but i put a continuity group i do not know how much it protects, however the solar panels with the clouds do not do a great deal

Lightening can be deadly at times, many times I've lost some electronic appliances to lightening before until I called a professional to help me install lightening rod in my house straight into the ground and since that day nothing got spoilt by lightning ⚡⚡ again
