I'm new and I'm just figuring it out. It's time to have a wallet. What should I pay attention to and how to choose them?

[General] Bitcoin Wallets - Which, what, why?
Do beginners know what closed & open source wallets are?
Open Source Hardware Wallets

For altcoins, I will suggest you open source hardware wallets as almost all online wallets for altcoins are close source. Click on the above links to read more.

First, you need to learn what you're doing (or what you're about to do), so you can choose the wallet that better suits your needs. You will be surprised to see how many times you change your mind, as you start learning different options and techniques at your disposal.
Then, you can start learning about different kinds of wallets, and make an informed decision. It's important to understand there are no "good" or "bad" wallets. Each has a purpose, and the same wallet that's great for you can be completely unsuitable for somebody else.
As a general guideline, choose open source over proprietary software. It doesn't matter if you know what "open source" means, what matters (to you) is that anybody can inspect the code of the wallet, so as to keep the developers honest.

Each wallet has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some use only keywords and some use multiple authentication. Behind it all comes back to us as users. However, I personally choose to store my crypto assets in many exchange wallets. people use and have good security such as two-factor authentication.

Use a hardware wallet, don’t store anything of too much value on an online wallet. The main ones are trezor & ledger. Make sure you only buy them from the official sources.
