When you do enter a market do matter because investing for long term can be influenced by how your portfolio are performing. Short term trading is indeed a bad idea. However, if the money we invest is not used for other needs, then we can invest for the long term, but if the money is also used for basic needs, of course we should choose to trade short term. We only take definite profits even in small amounts.

Personally I utilizes the knowledge of charting technique to avoid buying at the top, Bollinger Band indicator has been always helpful, I also bear in mind that the upper bank is profit taking zones, meanwhile it combination with stochastic oscillator also help me to buy at dip with reference to weekly chart timeframe of BTC/USD especially when an exhaustion candle had been formed all these I put together as a strategy, thus the opportunity of buying at the dip is unveil though this requires a lot learning and research.
