Hello.  I had an older version of QT I believe from 2017 that stopped being functional due to Windows Defender issue.  This wallet did have a balance and I have the wallet backed up. 
I upgraded to Core v. 22 and my wallet now has a zero balance.  Does anybody have any advice for me?

If you've got the transactions, then does the balance tally with the transactions that are displayed?

Before you upgraded, was the wallet fully synchronized to the current date and time? If it was, then you can try to use your backup instead, though I'm more inclined to think that the balance that you saw might've been outdated.

If your Bitcoin Core client is fully synchronized, what does the transaction history show? Are there any outgoing transactions that you forgot about after all these years, or some that you maybe never initiated in the first place?
Is it a shared computer that you are using? Any chance someone else might have accessed it? What about malware and viruses, did you have problems with those in the past? You mentioned that Windows Defender might have deleted some parts of your Core client. Maybe it recognized and deleted malware that might have done some damage to your coins already.

This.

If the wallet has loaded "OK" (ie. Bitcoin Core didn't output any obvious errors with the wallet being corrupt) and there are transactions displayed, then I would also guess that the previous balance that was shown was either outdated, or there have been transactions since the last time the wallet was used.

Either way, I would expect that the current balance showing now with the wallet file fully synchronized is correct.


I would also suggest that the OP should run an audit on all the displayed transactions and make sure they tally up with what they expect... hopefully it is just a case of a forgotten transaction, and not loss of funds due to the wallet being compromised.
