I have a nano x hardware wallet and have stored some crypto on it for the past 6 months.
This included

Tezos
Bitcoin cash
Ethereum

Last week I sent 1 bitcoin to the wallet and this showed on there within ten minutes.

I then decided to send it back to my binance wallet and it wouldnt send, i kept getting an error saying

Something went wrong
please check that your hardware wallet is set up with the recovery phrase or passphrase associated to the selected account

I have spoken to ledger support but they really are no help.
I have tried everything and i have managed to send the ethereum, bitcoin cash and tezos from the ledger without an issue. the only issue i have is with the sending of the bitcoin.

can anyone help please.

This problem occurs when the account you are using on Ledger Live does not match the account which is open on your Nano X. There are a number of possibilities that you'll need to work through.

Do you have more than one account on Ledger Live for bitcoin?
Did you ever use a different hardware wallet with the same installation of Ledger Live?
Did you ever use a different seed phrase on your Nano X?
Did you ever set up a an additional passphrase?
Did you ever use a secondary PIN?

Do you see the balance of 1 btc you receive in your ledger live software?
If so, do you have multiple BTC accounts?

I believe this is very important. If you can see the balance in Ledger live software, your wallet certainly have the private keys for the funds.

You are just using the wrong PIN
This might be case, where you have 2 PIN, one for each wallet.

Each wallet has a different recovery phrase or passphrase. You should try your secondary PIN.

If you can't figure out what went wrong based on the advice that o_e_l_e_o gave you, you could try to connect your Nano X with Electrum. That won't require that you insert and reveal your recovery phrase, so don't worry about that.

If you have never used Electrum before, make sure you verify the signatures and only download from the official website. After that, click on Create new wallet > Standard wallet > Use a hardware device and follow the on-screen instructions. Your hardware wallet needs to be connected and unlocked and you can't have Ledger Live open while the wallet communicates with Electrum.

Ive never installed more than one account on the ledger, I even took photos of the seed phrase and I have followed what ledger told me today to reset the device. I enter the phrase and also the pin and when I connect to my laptop I can see my bitcoin in the account. everything works except that I cant withdraw it.
I had bitcoin, ethereum, bitcoin cash and tezos, I could withdraw everything apart from the bitcoin which fails no matter what I do. I have tried electrum and still the same.

You said you only had one wallet or account on Ledger Live, and in the next sentence you said you added a second wallet. That wallet showed that it had 0.25 BTC at one point. That means you had more than one. Can you try adding more wallets until Ledger can't find additional ones?
Maybe that 1 BTC is scattered around in multiple wallets.

So when you connected your Ledger to Electrum, it didn't open the correct wallet where you claim to have 1 BTC? What did it open? Did it create a wallet with totally different addresses? Make sure you add the correct derivation path when connecting your Ledger to Electrum. You can find the derivation path under the Accounts tab in Ledger Live. There should be a gear icon in the top right, click on it and copy-paste it somewhere. You need the exact derivation path when you initiate the connection between Ledger and Electrum.

On a different note. You mentioned in your posts that you took screenshots of your seed. This is a big no-go. Don't do that. The seed is to supposed to be written down in paper and multiple copies should be kept in different geographical locations. You don't keep it in your phone, email, or stored somewhere on your computer on cloud.

Thank you for your reply.

I haven't slept in days as this money was being used to pay a medical bill so I do appreciate your time here,

When I went to send the bitcoin from my finance account I first connected my ledger to my pc and went to the bitcoin wallet to copy the address. This address was then pasted into the finance account and the transfer was made. A few minutes later the [Suspicious link removed]ived and all was well.
A few days later I was sending the bitcoin to my coinbase account so that I could exchange it for GBP and withdraw it to my bank to pay the bill.

After doing loads of checking, the wallet address on my ledger bitcoin account is different to the one I sent it too last week. I can see the bitcoin on my ledger software on my MacBook but it just wont let me send it.
I have opened several bitcoin wallet accounts on my software but none match the bitcoin address that I sent the bitcoin too.
I can see the bitcoin on the blockchain sitting in the account address I copied from the ledger software but I just cant access it.
I hope this makes some sense.

What phrase? Your seed phrase of 12 or 24 words? Or an additional passphrase you came up with yourself?

When I went to send the bitcoin from my finance account I first connected my ledger to my pc and went to the bitcoin wallet to copy the address. This address was then pasted into the finance account and the transfer was made.
Did you verify the address on your hardware wallet at any point? Have you used any other Ledger wallet with this computer? Perhaps an old Nano S?

I have opened several bitcoin wallet accounts on my software but none match the bitcoin address that I sent the bitcoin too.
What character(s) does the address you can't access start with? 1, 3, or bc1? What characters do the addresses in all the other bitcoin wallet accounts you have opened start with?

Have you tried connecting your Ledger to Electrum yet?

Can we conclude that your 'finance account' sent the coins to the same address as the one you gave them or did they send the coins to a different address?

After doing loads of checking, the wallet address on my ledger bitcoin account is different to the one I sent it too last week.
Different how? Does the Ledger Live show a second transaction that you didn't make? Is the address that received the coins still the same as the address you submitted to your 'finance account'?

I can see the bitcoin on the blockchain sitting in the account address I copied from the ledger software but I just cant access it.
I hope this makes some sense.
I would suggest you try the thing with Electrum that I mentioned previously. Get the correct derivation path from your Ledger Live wallet that holds the coins you are trying to access, and enter it into Electrum while your Nano is connected. This article should explain the basics of how to establish the connection.

The 24 word phrase that was shown on the device when I first installed it.

I dont think I verified it, I just opened the software wallet via the app on my MacBook and copied the bitcoin wallet address. after I sent it to the address it quickly showed up on the software so it definitely went to my ledger account.

I have opened several bitcoin wallet accounts on my software but none match the bitcoin address that I sent the bitcoin too.
What character(s) does the address you can't access start with? 1, 3, or bc1? What characters do the addresses in all the other bitcoin wallet accounts you have opened start with?

I can connect to all of the accounts, I just cant withdraw from the one with the bitcoin in it. The address starts with e 3.

Have you tried connecting your Ledger to Electrum yet?

Yes but it doesnt help.

This is strange. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that Ledger Live did not create P2SH addresses?

I have tried connecting the electrum software but it doesnt show any transactions on any of the wallets linked to my ledger.
Try creating another new Electrum wallet using your Ledger hardware wallet, but when it gets to the page asking for your derivation path, select "p2sh-segwit". The field at the bottom should then change to say m/49'/0'/0'. Check this wallet for funds. If empty, do the whole thing again, but this time select "p2sh-segwit" and change the field at the bottom to say m/49'/0'/1'. Repeat again, and change to m/49'/0'/2'. Repeat this maybe 5 or 6 times to be sure.

I have tried connecting the electrum software but it doesnt show any transactions on any of the wallets linked to my ledger.
That could mean a few things.

  • You aren't using the correct derivation path during the wallet creation process in Electrum.
  • The seed that is currently entered into your Ledger hardware wallet is not the seed of an address where the coins were sent to.
  • You might have extended the seed with an additional word (passphrase) but you have forgotten about doing that.

Can you remove all your Bitcoin accounts from your accounts tab in Ledger Live, so that the software shows a 0 Bitcoin balance in the portfolio tab? After that scan and add all Bitcoin wallets for all types of accounts manually. Legacy, nested segwit, and native segwit. I am not sure if legacy wallets can even be added anymore, but it shouldn't even matter since your coins are on a nested segwit address as you said.

Once Ledger Live finishes scanning all your wallets, let us know if the account where your 1 BTC is reappears in your portfolio overview in Ledger Live. If it doesn't, those coins are not on an address that was generated from the seed currently entered in your Nano S. But before you delete the funded BTC accounts, please check and write down their derivation paths like I mentioned previously.

This is strange. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that Ledger Live did not create P2SH addresses?
It can. I have some coins in a wallet like that from the time when I was in the FortuneJack sig. campaign. FortuneJack didn't support native segwit addresses at the time.

I will do this but I have just been doing what you said about adding the wallets and when I added a new account using the "native segwit p2wpkh" the first account it finds sees an old bitcoin transaction I did in 2020 using the device when I first go it.

Native segwit addresses start with 'bc1', the one you are looking for is nested segwit with addresses that begin with '3'. What is the status of the coins that are in the 'bc1' address that you just mentioned? Can you spend those?

Regarding your previous question on how to create Electrum wallets, I mentioned it briefly in this post.

Btw, is your Ledger Live app and the Bitcoin application that is installed on your Nano updated to the newest versions? Both of them?

Yes everything is updated.

the wallet that the electrum finds is empty, it shows 0.2btc going in and then going out which does relate to a transaction I made last year but it doesnt find my 1.08 bitcoin on any of the protocols, ive tried all that you mentioned above.

I have spoken to a crypto recovery company and the guy told me that there is a known issue with ledgers where they allow you to transfer all coins and tokens apart from bitcoin after you update some software variants. he said it isnt widespread but they have seen several issues like mine.
I am 100% sure I only ever installed this once with one set of 24 passwords but the support from ledger keeps asking me if I have another set of 24 words which I dont.

Lets say ledger dont assist me, is it likely that the bitcoin is lost forever ?
ive not slept in 3 days and the stress is huge (due to what the money was being spent on) so if its the worst news, I may as well accept it rather than killing myself only to come to the same answer.

Those 0.2 BTC were on a different type of account and derivation path weren't they? They weren't part of the same account where your 1.08 BTC is supposed to be located?

Have you checked the derivation path of the account that holds the 1 BTC? Can you tell us what it shows in Ledger Live?

I have spoken to a crypto recovery company and the guy told me that there is a known issue with ledgers where they allow you to transfer all coins and tokens apart from bitcoin after you update some software variants. he said it isnt widespread but they have seen several issues like mine.
What crypto recovery company is this? Can you share the original correspondence? Feel free to blur out anything that might infringe on your own privacy.

Lets say ledger dont assist me, is it likely that the bitcoin is lost forever ?
Hard to say. What do the guys from that company say that told you about that Ledger issue? Is it something they have managed to fix for other clients in the past?

Using Electrum (if you can find the correct wallet to restore) should resolve this, if this is indeed the problem.

I would do as Pmalek has advised and open Ledger Live, go to your account which holds the 1 BTC, and find the derivation path. Then, provided the address starts with 3, open a new Electrum wallet using your hardware wallet, choose "p2sh-segwit", and copy exactly the same derivation path. If the wallet it opens is different to the one in Ledger Live, then the account in Ledger Live is linked to either a different hardware wallet or a different seed phrase or passphrase you don't remember.

Also, please don't send your seed phrase to some random recovery company or someone from a chat group.

I even took photos of the seed phrase and I have followed what ledger told me today to reset the device.
What do you mean you took photos of the seed phrase?!
You should NEVER do that and you should NEVER keep seed phrase in any digital form on your computer, either in image or in text form.
This is big security flaw and you should not consider your coins are safe like that.
Seed words should only be kept offline on paper or metal plates.

I have spoken to a crypto recovery company and the guy told me that there is a known issue with ledgers where they allow you to transfer all coins and tokens apart from bitcoin after you update some software variants. he said it isnt widespread but they have seen several issues like mine.
Crypto recovery company sounds a lot like a scam that sends you private messages first on social media offering their ''help''.
Don't listen advices from anyone and don't send seed words to any website, especially if they say they are ''leDgEr SupPorT''

Lets say ledger dont assist me, is it likely that the bitcoin is lost forever ?
Bitcoin is not lost forever if you can see it on blockchain address and if you didn't compromised or exposed your seed words.
I have to say that I am starting to doubt if any of this you are saying ever really happened, so can you please show us some proof of your conversation with Ledger support (you can blur private sections)?
Thank you in advance.
