Hello,

I found a wallet about 14 years, but I forgot my password, took no notice when still a college student, these are to participate in activities to get more than a BTC,
16 digit password is immediately disorderly,
I research on the BBS for a long time including Google,
I find it impossible to retrieve it now.
I hope that the future is still valuable time to have a way to crack the password. Smiley Smiley Smiley

The very first version of the bitcoin reference client is 13 years old, at that point there were only a handfull of users... So 14 years is impossible.
This being said: could you tell us which wallet client you are using? Sometimes it's possible to bruteforce, but everything depends on the wallet you used and how strong of a password you used.

Do you mean you got paid in BTC 14 years ago to participate in activities? That makes no sense since 13 years ago when bitcoin was created nobody would have paid you in bitcoin.

Quote
16 digit password is immediately disorderly,
It comes down to how much you know about the password. Is the length all you know? If yes then there is no hope at all.
But if you know more like what words you used in your password (maybe you usually use your name, your pet's name, something like that) or numbers you usually use in a password then you can reduce the search space to a more reasonable size that  can be searched within reasonable time.
For example
Code:
Remember, Remember the 5th of November
is 38 characters long but it is very easy to crack if you know the words.

ok, but that doesn't really answer my question... You say you forgot your password, but my question is: your password for *which wallet*.
There are dozens of wallets, some still active, some no longer maintained, hardware wallets, online wallets, paper wallets,... if we don't know which wallet you used, we can't give specific advise on how to bruteforce your password (and even then, we cannot give any guarantee.... bruteforcing is only as good as the amount of time and hardware you're willing to spend... and a lot of times it's impossible).

THX bro,
I will try my best, I have no hope to crack it now, and I may have more hope in the future. As for why THERE was BTC at the beginning, I only remember it was given as a gift by point card purchase, and I don't know why it was given as a gift.

Wallet.dat from around ~2015. Odds are pretty big that it's a bitcoin core wallet file.
You could potentially use btcrecover to try to bruteforce your password, but everything depends on what you know about the password + how complex it is + the amount of hardware/time you're willing to spend

Yes, I have tried, but it takes too long, so I have to give up for the time being. I can get back what belongs to me sooner or later

16 digit password is immediately disorderly,
Is this a reference to what you think the password might be? 16 random characters is 105 bits of entropy. There is no chance you will ever be able to brute force this in your lifetime, and you'll be wasting your time trying. You will need to have some memory or idea of what your password might be to be able to narrow down the search space.

If it's takes too long, usually it's because there are too many possible combination, slow hardware or both of them. If you have GPU, you should configure btcrecover to use GPU which give massive speed improvement (up to 96x times according to the guide). Check this guide  https://btcrecover.readthedocs.io/en/latest/GPU_Acceleration/. If you could share your token file (make sure to change listed character/word for your own security), other member might be able to suggest more efficient token which reduce possible combination.

Alternatively, wait for few more years where Bitcoin price might be higher and GPU is far faster. Don't forget to make multiple backup of your wallet.dat file and write down part/characteristic of your password.

I only remember it was given as a gift by point card purchase, and I don't know why it was given as a gift.
This sounds strange. In the early days, I'm not aware if there was such thing, but it's odd as there weren't even services accepting it. May I ask you a question? What's this that made you currently concerned for this wallet retrieval?

I mean, even if you had bought bitcoins 3 years ago, you'd want to make sure they're safe. Let alone if they were bought from the very beginning. You can't have seen the price rising for a decade straight and not spare a moment to make sure your money's safe.

I'm just curious. Don't respond if you don't feel comfortable.

To me, the OP's post just looks like a story. He does not write that he needs help. He does not provide wallet details. Stories like this have been reported before. Hence, the doubts whether this wallet was at all, and the motives for creating the topic are not clear.
A user was shown to him who is ready to assist.
Now the continuation of his "fantastic" story becomes very interesting.  Smiley

A very sensitive thing to forget, and 14years is a very long time, so many sites have been locked, others are no longer in operation at the time.
It'd be better though If you state what wallet you're talking about, maybe someone might be able to help.out.

Where did you get your information? Cause it is wrong...
It IS possible to brute force a bitcoin core password, there are even tools for this purpose (like the one i discussed in my first post in this thread, but there are others aswell).
What IS true is that, a lot of times, the time, hardware resources and energy needed to bruteforce a password are greater than your lifetime and/or more costly than the value of the unspent outputs in the wallet with the forgotten password.

EVERYTHING depends on the strength of the password and how much you still remember about it.
If you know, for a fact, your password is exactly 10 digits long (0-9), there are only 10,000,000,000 possible combinations... With a single GPU, btcrecover can try about 6000 keys/second, that's about ~20 days.
If you have a habit of only using lower case letters and never make a password more than 5 letters long, your searchspace is 265 (<12 million), which would take only little over a day.
If you know what passwords you might have been using, but you know you always used an incremental number at the end and you cannot remember wether or not your used a capital letter and you're unsure about one or two other letters that might have been replaced, the searchspace might be only a couple million, and you could potentially bruteforce this password in a couple of hours.

And btcrecover might not even be the best tool for the job....

I also wanted to know when someone forget his password or key for his wallet, what will the person do to retrieve it back.

Or if the person lost his device which has automatically same is password or key..and buy new device to login..but the passcode is rejected. What will he do?
