Women named Rhonda have 6 units of bitcoin back in the year 2013. She had bought them knowing it through a radio talk show. While she was buying the price was $80 and she had used it for some time and forgot it until 2017. When the price of bitcoin increased reaching around $20000 she got excited and started finding her holdings on the computer.

She had lost her login information, she had got her password printed on a paper, but some letters on the wallet identifier is missing. She had tried for months and finally gave up.

Once again during the last year's rise of above $50k she got into getting back her bitcoins. Finally explored how can it be recovered on internet. Here she had found a father and son named Chris and Charlie Brooks who claimed to be “crypto treasure hunters." After having conversation with those guys she had handed every details about the wallet. Everything has been done through the video call and her bitcoins were back. Her wallet had got $175000 in bitcoin and she had paid Chris and Charlie 20% and $10000 for her daughter Megan. Have kept the rest on a secure hardware wallet.

I don't know how far this is true or is this a way of promoting Crypto Treasure Hunters, but this is really a happy moment for Rhonda getting back her bitcoins after nine years.

They had something to work on unlike those that were truly lost including the login information and credentials, it's impressive but not groundbreaking. Good for Rhonda to be able to get those bitcoins back, that amount of money that she's got is a life changing amount and she immediately secured her daughter's future, hope that she wouldn't have anymore incident involving lost bitcoins.

Kind of unsafe to hand over all your wallet details to a complete stranger.  She was probably so helpless she thought this was the only option however.

Sounds like they bruteforced the wallet identifier's missing characers and found the proper combination.  I reckon there are a few reputable members of the forum known for helping with wallet recovery.  When it becomes the last resort, it may be the only hope to get back your funds but they are always under danger as soon as your wallet details are shared.

Had I ever been in Rhonda's situation, I would have tried all possible methods including bruteforcing all by myself before even contemplating handing out my wallet details to a stranger, let alone over the Internet.  Ad for CTH or not, way too few users have the proper education to safely share very sensitive information, even to a trusted party, over the Internet.

Keep your darn seed safe and avoid this mess at all costs.

Whether this particular story is true or not, I guess there have been somehow similar stories about Bitcoin recovery. Some went unsuccessful like the story of James Howells and his 7,500 Bitcoin. Some are also successful like this story of Rhonda.

The funny thing here is that her failure to recover her Bitcoin when the price was only $20,000 forced her to hodl until the price shot up to more than $50,000. Great thing for her. But what if she failed once again? She might be recovering it when the price has reached $100,000.

It's a very happy story. I'm glad that there are people like this who exist, and that at least some of them are honest. While reading, I was waiting for the part where she gave them too much info, and they got all the coins for themselves. Instead, she got most of her money, and they received a fair and still significant commission. It's really a win-win situation. But in most cases, unfortunately, lost coins are truly lost. She had a unique situation with some identifier letters missing, whereas usually people lose their passphrase, and then it's over very fast.

Yeah there's promotion involve but the story sounds true to me.

Photo of the father and son who helped her in another article:

We'll never see 'Rhonda' for security purposes.

Mine was a little different. She gave them info, paid an upfront money, and never got anything in return Grin It's the stories that I usually read from victims of (fraudulent) recovery services. She was lucky to meet those guys instead of scammers

I almost thought that it just a good fantasy story until I read this reply. Seems it's really like good story, from 80$ to well, hundred of thousands in a matter of 8~9 years.

From the hackers perspective seems it's a win-win, plus they were now cover from different press, this will also boost their recovery service or any technical related services, free ads from huge press media  Cool

Very risky handing over wallet details to a 3rd party. The only one I’ve ever seen mentioned as 100% trustworthy is Dave’s Wallet Recovery https://www.walletrecoveryservices.com/
He’s been featured in many articles, both mainstream & crypto related.

This is also the only known recovery service that I'd go first and would hand over the details with confidence. But hearing the story of Chris and Charlie.
I wouldn't trust them early with any details if ever I'll be on that position but it's understandable, that Rhonda is on desperation and got lucky that the guys have shown worthy of her trust.

True but maybe she just wanted to take the risk and because the transaction was done over a video call as mentioned by OP could have given her another level of confidence that she could identify the people. Anyways, lucky her and also a good publication for the father and son.

That's really great for Rhonda but it could have been worse if the crypto treasure hunters were scamsters, they could have kept all for themselves.
Now that this story is out there may be people trying to impersonate crypto treasure hunters as well.
But lucky for Rhonda that she didn't lose hope and was finally able to recover her lost coins. Not everyone are as lucky as her.

I wonder here what Bitcoin wallet Rhonda's have used, do you think it's a hardware wallet?  In 2013 maybe there's no hardware wallet and most of those wallets are custodial or a web wallet which is some of them has been lost their Bitcoin too because of their matters.

It's a good thing Rhonda was able to manage her wallet and solve the puzzle of his Bitcoin wallet and she risk his assets on random people on the internet that could be losing all of her money.  Another reason whether the story is true or not true is that this was a marketing strategy so that traders will encourage newbies about their company.

I am sure that is a happy moment for Rhonda as he can get her bitcoin back in her wallet. After going through many things that had made him almost give up, he kept trying and ended up happily in the end.

This is a lesson for us always to store private keys carefully to recover the wallet if something happens. I'm glad to hear that Rhonda was able to get her bitcoins back and at the current bitcoin price, she's gotten a lot of money as a surprise. But this is my first time hearing about a service to recover the wallet.

Because of the word "identifier", it's safe to say they were dealing with a blockchain.com [FKA .info] wallet, and considering it's an online wallet, I'm glad nothing bad happened to it.

I really hope she didn't spend/waste the 20%, for something that she could've gotten by checking the footer area of the authorization emails!

And the father and son duo kept their promise and not screw her after recovering her bitcoins. Rhonda's action was very risky but maybe, as she had no more options left, she took the risk of trusting those strangers. Maybe, after countless exchange of messages and all, she trusted them that they will stay true to their word. Lucky, that she kept the paper even if there were missing letters, because if totally there was no printed paper, I don't think it would be that easy for the father and son to recover those bitcoins.

Lesson learned, always keep your important docs to safety. Even if you think it is not that valuable enough. Maybe, make copies if you think it will be erased by time. And secure their safety also. Also, don't trust strangers over the net. She got lucky in this case, but in most cases, people will screw you many times over.

Some sort of marketing? Possibly yes or not but what matter most is that Rhonda do able to retrieve those coins back and its true that you would really be doing all of those things neither
a desperate kind of move and risky since you do know that it do talks about some amounts of money which you couldnt really ignore. It is really just normal for someone to be that
motivated but not all would really be ending up success but this one is different.

Probably not a good idea for an average person to reveal they have that much bitcoin to the world. The BBC article shows her name and a picture of her and her daughter. It doesn't help that she seems to not be cautious enough considering she handed every info she got to a not-that-reputable service... glad that everything worked out though, hope she stays safe out there.

Yes, it was a risky decision but luckily, the father and son kept their promise by helping Rhonda. It can also get father and son to get the next client because I'm sure, slowly, the father and son's reputation will rise and get more customers and help people who might be experiencing something like Rhonda's. If more people are like that father and son, maybe it really helps people who have lost their bitcoins long ago so they can get their bitcoins back.

Yes, we learn important lessons from what happened to Rhonda and hopefully, it doesn't happen to us or those closest to us who have bitcoins on their devices.

Source : Woman Named Rhonda Got Her Lost Bitcoins Back
so meaning he is lucky enough not finding the bitcoin back in 2017 ?

also is this same reason that we can trust someone from the internet? well she is lucky to find someone with real motive of helping for payments, but what about if we encountered hackers or cheaters? so instead of gaining the Bitcoin this will be gone and goes to bad people?

but this is a case to case basis so lets see what it goes.

The only mistake that Rhonda did in the past was not securing her bitcoins seriously so she ended up almost losing them. Luckily, there are still good people around that are not taking advantage on her, instead help her to retrieve her bitcoins. I guess the father and son were very lucky too as they ended up having a big reward that had brought big changes in their lives. But its very rare to find honest people around knowing a big amount of money is at stake. So its always a must thing to protect all your investments and ensure its safety and security knowing their present value will appreciate in the long run. And before you knew it, its the most prized possession you could ever have.
