You can take a look at what i have suggested above. Diversification is giving you more chance to earn from tokens rather than peg with the top coins that have less room to growth. It's the best thing to be done by anyone. That's why so many crypto holders have various assets in their wallet coz they know that if it can give them maximum return once all of them turn to the bullish pattern.

The characteristics of a good coin in my opinion, Strong Fundamentals. Where the coin has a strong network and is used in various projects or real cases such as Ethereum, BNB, Polkadot.

I am an impatient person. I can't wait for five years. :) But if I had to hold on for five years; I would definitely buy coins like Ethereum, BNB, SOL and AVAX. These are coins with strong developers (and strong communities) or strong financiers. If a meteor doesn't hit our world, they will continue to survive. It is not investment advice. I wish you good luck. We do not know what will happen after 2 days. We need some luck to know 5 years from now. :)

you should choose smart contract altcoins because they usually lasts for a really long time considering their use case that’s the best out of many, even the altcoins that are revolving around gaming and NFT couldn’t lasts more than smart contract platform for the simple fact that these altcoins are being created on top of the smart contract platform altcoins.
you can see an ancient altcoins like ethereum and similar are having really good growth for the long term, a long time has passed and instead they are just gaining more and more fame, considering the trend of NFT is also raising their fame and popularity i’m sure these smart contract based altcoins are the best for investment. Not in order but ETH, BNB, ADA.

I think those 3 are going to continue it's run in the future. Of course as we enter a bear market, the price might hit a snag, just like what happen back in 2018. But boy, if you have invested during their lowest low, during the 2020-2021 bull run, you can definitely make a lot of money by buying them during it's lows and holding and waiting for the right time to sell off.

Lot of questions like this arise and always, existing coins with a lot of project development and listed on major exchanges are the best option.
Not putting all the eggs in one basket is a good thing but dividing your investment in many coins is quite risky it is very likely that you do not get any return, it would be better to diversify on other formed investments such as stock.

There is no surefire way to know that an altcoin will last for the next five years.
Based on my experience following ethereum whose project lasted for
more than five years, at least the project continues to develop their platform.
To analyze a project that can last more than five years, we can't use charts or other techniques
because we really depend on the fundamentals of the project.
For example, how their platforms work, how big their ecosystem is, who is behind them,
how they are consistent with their work progress in developing projects. that's what I usually use to get long term coins.

Try to take a look at BSC, matic and another second layer solution to the ethereum blockchain. I do believe this kind of tokens will be alive for long term. It's caused by any second layer solution has very good ecosystem that will always support it. If you are wanna trying to find another solution and then defi or metaverse tokens may become the best choice after the second layer tokens for you.
I think that the main concern must be on how sustain the development that will be made by the developers.

better to pick top project for each category in crypto market. we know there are grouping based on kind of utility from every project. for example you can pick top layer 1 project which is have best solution in network traffic and fee. another part could pick project from metaverse, defi or meme project. by distributing our money into these category could diversify risk.

There is, just look at Ethereum, they have been in the space for the last 5 years.
And then we have coins like Cardano and then Binance Coin that suddenly comes out of nowhere and now in the top 5. So it means it is a solid project because investors have spoken, and the fundamentals is also good by the way. And then we have Solana, Terra also entering the picture, I think they are a good investment too for long term.

As we already know, coins can last for the next five to six years on many averages. You can look at CMC for yourself and start compiling the list. But if it's about staying in price, I don't think that there is an altcoin that won't experience a sharp decline if the price of bitcoin drops drastically.

But I think you can choose the coins in the top 100 list because the coins have a chance to rise again later. Ethereum BNB, XRP, Luna, SOL, Cardano, AVAX, DOT and others may remain in the market, but maintaining their current position will not be easy as other coins will be scrambling to try to replace them.
