This is a good approach. You should definitely check the past data, I am not saying that it is useless, of course it is not useless. You could at the very least see the places it could go up to or go down to and that gives you an idea. But for direction, relying on data alone and not checking anything else is a wrong move and usually one that ends up making people lose money.
