right now, i'm using trezor hardware wallet for almost a year. it has been a fantastic experience so far. i had never planned to use other wallet. but i have one friend who has invested in bitcoin long ago. we had shared a lot of plan, ideas, opinion with one another. at some point, i mentioned my long term plan about bitcoin that i'm planning for holding bitcoin for next 10 years, will buy a hardware wallet for that. recently, i had my birthday and surprisingly, he gifted me a ledger nano s and asked me to use that wallet for my long term plan.
i don't know why i got a bad feeling. i have read we must not use a wallet unless it's from authentic site.
how would i know i'm not going to be tricked by my friend. i trust him a lot to be honest, i know he isn’t going to betray me but there's nothing wrong to be sure that there's nothing wrong. how can i do that? how can i be sure that i'm not going to use a wallet with bug/malware installed to fuck my life savings.

Give this a read: https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/4404382029329-Check-hardware-integrity?support=true

A trezor would've been just fine for your long term. Why switch? Since we're talking about life savings here, even if you no longer want to use the trezor, I think It would be better if you buy the device yourself.

But since we're talking about life savings here, I really don't see why you wouldn't buy one yourself instead.
that's not the case. as you can see, my motive was to learn how actually i can be sure that i'm not going to get fucked? it's my quest to learn the procedure.

In that case, check the article that OmegaStarScream sent you that has details of the way the hardware components of the Ledger Nano S are supposed to look like. If your device contains anything out of the ordinary, don't use it. If in doubt, you can always contact their support team and explain the situation.

When it comes to the software part. Always generate your own seed. Don't use a seed someone else gave you or one that has been written down or 'prepared' for you. There is supposed to be a manual in the box that instructs you how to download Ledger's native software - Ledger Live. It has to point to the official site (https://www.ledger.com/). Anything else is fake. You need Ledger Live to install the crypto apps of the assets you want to store on the HW. You also need it to perform firmware upgrades and crypto app updates. Only a genuine Ledger device can connect to Ledger's servers to install or update apps/firmware.

Did he gave you brand new wallet or it was opened and pre-loaded with some coins and history of transactions?
Just make sure that device you receive was not opened or changed in any way, and just to make sure you can reset the device or import your own generated seed.
I had bad experience with friends connected with crypto so I don't trust anyone 100% and it's better to verify your device is genuine on ledger website.
Note that Ledger nono S is stopping with manufacturing of this devices and I am sure they will stop supporting it with updates soon (like they did with all their previous junk).
I am not suggesting using this (or any of their products) as your main hardware wallet.

Your Trezor is better in a few ways than that Ledger, on paper, anyway, so no need to switch in my honest opinion.
Adding to that, this situation is definitely weird, especially if the device isn't sealed or anything. And the gut feeling interestingly, often wins in my opinion! So listen to it! Wink

As we can see here, this wallet is closed source, so there's no way to inspect the firmware or to verify that it's running what they say it runs. I see a big risk in not using a closed-source wallet.

Why not keep that wallet as a souvenir and buy a new hardware wallet that suits you?

  • I mean, you're trying to save the money you want to HODLING it for a long time, which is definitely going to be more than $200.
  • Try to compare all the details mentioned above, and if you find any problem or any modification it is better to stop using it
  • I still think it is not worth the risk.

Buy from the official website and check all the details.
