Putin always hated Ukraine, back in 2008 he told that Ukraine isn't a real country, that it was created by the West artificially and that a large part of its territory belongs to Russia by right. And in his video published days before the war the talked about historical borders, Soviet Union and Russian empire, so you get the picture. Putin has unchecked power over Russia, and he doesn't care about human lives, neither Ukrainian or Russian, so his intention is to conquer Ukraine and enter Russian history as one of its greatest rulers.

At least to me it seems that the issue with Ukraine joining NATO is nothing but an excuse, to me it seems that Putin wants to recreate the USSR and for that he needs to annex Ukraine regardless of the economic cost this could signify for his country, and if that is the case then the next question is what are the plans of Putin for the rest of those countries? Will he try to to do this again in another country? Because even if at this point NATO will not join the war at Ukraine, can they tolerate that something like this happens again?

It began only in 2014 when a coup started and replaced its Russian friendly president with a hostile such as Zelensky that's why Putin oppose it. He did oppose some other countries joining NATO close to Russia but because the president is friendly to them, he considers it.

What other intention should they have but security? Just like China, they are also opposing Taiwan to be independent, what if it joins NATO?
Today China warns US to stop selling arms to Taiwan. They were also seeking security. And I have no doubt this will escalate and war in the SCS.

At first, representatives of Russia only threw ultimatums, setting unrealistic conditions and in fact demanding that Ukraine unconditionally surrender to the invaders. As the Russian blitzkrieg failed and the losses in manpower and equipment left the Kremlin in shock, now the ultimatums have disappeared and at least some signs of possible agreements have begun to appear. Yesterday, the negotiations were put on a technical pause until today to clarify positions.
If not for Ukraine's desire to join NATO, Putin would still have found another reason to attack Ukraine. He needs Ukraine and its history of Kievan Rus for his empire.

I would guess that the difference between "stating negotiations" and almost finishing are the same thing. NATO application to enter it is nothing, but getting accepted takes time and that is the real danger for Russia, well according to Putin, it is not a threat to Russia at all because nobody cares about them.

At the end of the day, Russia is so strong that they single handedly ruined any chance UN could do anything about the current situation. They kept saying that "what about the people you killed during the war we started!" basically, like Ukraine should have just not responded and defend themselves. Putin only wants power and respect, and this is how he is getting it according to him, and that's it. When he is satisfied, he will stop, not before that.

The negotiations should be seen as a show of diplomacy before the world, while Ukraine is devastated, I don't know how much this country must suffer for the deaths to finally stop, but at the rate it is going, I don't see things looking good, while they are in rounds of negotiations, Ukraine is bombed from many places in the country, I think they will leave Kyiv last, in this vein, both the USA and all of NATO play dumb and deaf, this is the reality of war, of course while They come out at the UN saying the end of the war and blah blah blah.

I do agree it's just an excuse, maybe it's been brewing for years inside Putin that he wanted Ukraine back for Russian, but Ukraine is like moving on the opposite direction. So when the timing is right, Putin attack under the guise of Ukraine joining the NATO and the West. As you can see in his speech, it seem this fight is personal to him, maybe he wanted to bring the old glory back of the USSR to that effect, he is the remnants of it for all we know.

There are probably many reasons worth noting for Putin’s brutal invasion into Ukraine. First, it has strong strategic military importance for Russia.
Second, I suspect there are also significant natural resources in Ukraine that Russia sees as valuable enough to literally kill people over.
And lastly, it can’t be understated in my opinion that Putin sees the taking back of Ukraine under Russian control as a point of pride.
Putin has a huge ego and I think he fundamentally miscalculated that most of the world would unite in solidarity in defense of this unnecessary bloodshed.

As far as I know, Russia's request is: maintain neutrality so that Ukraine does not join any military group or alliance, recognize Russia's sovereignty over Crimea, demilitarize the government Ukraine. please correct me if I am wrong.

The US sending troops and establishing military bases in Nato countries is to preserve peace and territory. but for Russia, this is a serious threat to its security. tbh, it is hard to know the major things that cause the invasion because in a situation like this both parties always tell lies. Putin said Jesus Christ to judge his invasion of Ukraine and he also claim to do in the first place because Moscow was defending against the genocide of Russian-speaking people by Ukraine while the Ukraine government said it all lies but I have once seen a Russian member of this forum that once talked about the same genocide before Putin said it in the news so it is hard to know what cause it though Putin may seize the opportunity to achieve his political ambition.
