Is it true that some power supply for PC takes more watts from the wall due to poorly built? If yes then how can one detect this power supply when shopping for one? Any identification?

No PSU's are 100% efficient. A PSU's rated efficiency is based on how efficient the PSU is in transforming the AC power from the wall in to the DC power that your components can use. 80 Plus is an organization that tests and certifies PSU's for manufacturer's and groups them according to their efficiency.

https://youtu.be/P2rjxK9aZ24?t=643

Higher rated PSU's consume less power because they use better quality components that are more efficient. e.g. In converting a 500 watt load, a PSU rated at 90% efficiency will consume 555 W from the wall vs a PSU rated at 80% will consume 625 W from the wall for the same 500 W load. The rest is wasted in heat.

How efficient a power supply is also depends on the percentage of the rated load being outputted, with most PSUs running at maximum efficiency around 50% load. Better quality PSU's are able to keep their rated efficiency for a higher percentage of the maximum output. Better quality dual conversion PSU's also convert the entire energy into a 12V single rail and then uses VRM to generate 5V and 3.3V. The cheaper PSU type converts using different taps in the transformer for each voltage and use the 5V line to regulate the voltage, instead of the 12V line like the dual conversion models. In mining, that causes voltage instability from not loading the 5V line.

As far as for mining, I would stick to Gold or higher rated PSU's from EVGA, Superflower, Seasonic or Corsair. Another good less expensive option is using a server power supply, but those tend to be much louder and require using a breakout board.

Good power supply are rated 80 PLUS I guess, I've read something about this online before but that was long time ago but I'm not sure that the power consumption of a 80plus rated PSU will be noticeably better than normal non premium PSUs.

Best way use any psu better efficiency is pay attention dont load more %70-80 rated power. You can understand very easy by measuring temperatures of the psu. If you seeing psu heating it means you are loosing for heat.

cosair rm1000x is a good unit it will do 700 watts 24/7 forever.  I have some running since 2016 no issue

it is a good gold item. about 89% efficient.

evga 1600 watt gold is good.

Is there even any bad Corsair PSU out there ? I have 650watt Corsair and a 750watt Corsair PSU and they still works since 2019, they came in a refurbished gaming PC I pulled them out and keep, sold the motherboard and the GPUs separately today I never change those power supply. Corsair brand is the best.

Get a server PSU with breakboard, thats if you don't have problem with the sound.

I always use RM1000x and EVGA G3 since 2017 (20 each one) 1 month ago one of the RM1000x blow up. I got a new site for my farm so i have few PSU servers (HP 1200 watts) since 2017, they where getting dust, i just put then working and everything is fine.

Right now i am looking to update the Breakboards for one that can let me sync the power on with a normal PSU, my plan is use a normal PSU and combine it with servers PSU, if i need a lot of watts i just buy server PSU with the requeriment i need (Nvidia cards eat too much watts).

Sorry for my english Cheesy

Nice information on here, I don't even know that power supplies have premium ones that take less watt power from wall, all I know is better brands but the rating stuff is new, I have a question about 1200 watt power supply, is 1000watt load too much for a 1200watt PSU?.

80%  is fine but most PSU have max efficient at 50% load.

By the way, is normal see server PSU with high rating (platinum etc). They have the same protection that the one the consumers use. Usually when coins are on red, those PSU cost less than $50.

The guys from https://www.parallelminer.com/ make good cables for the breakboards and have good combos, prices are insane but check this page when cripto go down and you will see really good prices. Also in Ebay you can find then.

If energy saving is very important to you, then buy power supplies with a big warranty, for example, 7-10 years. They are assembled from high-quality components, for example, the cosair 1000 series. Do not overpay for the titanium version, gold and platinum are very good power supplies.

I thought that server PSU is better than that desktop PC PSU even if they are rated at 80plus gold and others, I've watched some mining youtube videos and they always recommend those server PSU.

Depends on the build and if the build is all mining and nothing else a server psu is good.

But many have a single high end card and game a few hours a day then mine the rest of the time.

Rigs like these can benefit with a good platinum psu or a gold.

https://www.newegg.com/abs-ali553-legend/p/N82E16883360183R?

I link a decent used pc from newegg above it has a single 3090

you could put a second gpu in it and this rig could mine browse game etc.

it does not need a server psu it needs a quality atx gold or platinum psu.

A server power supply is cheaper, because a lot of used power supplies are sold on online trading platforms. And for a farm of 8-13 video cards, it is more profitable for you to buy 1 server power supply with the right number of necessary connectors.

I wonder why they cost so much at first, but now I know that they have this kind of efficiency. Yesterday I bought 80 plus bronze of another brand because of my old PSU is noisy, I can hear the fans spin and my electric bill is unacceptable. I saw some corsair at the shop downtown and neglect them because they are too pricey and no experience in using them. So I decided to buy a cheap one thinking I could save more energy. I will be waiting for another 4 weeks to see how this goes and if things don't go as I have planned, I will try to take advices from you guys on using a corsair brand.

yep server psus are very quality japan caps inside and other components are top quality. they must be quality because they designed work for non stop 24/7, only bad thing is they get noisy if you load them much.

Simply put that's why server PSUs they are recommended for mining rigs. Gaming PSUs aren't.

I have had arguments regarding this topic for a long time, too many trolls dont understand simple math, I always told people to buy 95% plus efficiency psus at 240v, 120v efficiency is a bit less 94%, because in the end anything that is saved at the wall will return the extra money you paid for the psu, not only for mining, if you are a gamer or have servers, always check cost benefit and the good ones always come with 10 years warranty.

It doesn’t make financial sense most of the time to get Platinum or Titanium based PSUs for mining. If you really need that extra efficiency you need to get a server PSU. Those are usually very efficient and reliable.

Most of the decent PSUs are the Gold rated PSUs. Sometimes you can score a deal on a Platinum level PSU however those are rare. Server PSUs is the way to go if you got tons of rigs and noise is not a factory. Especially if you got access to 240V power.
