This is my first time using a forum, I heard I can get better at crypto stuff if I join this forum so here I am, don't know how silly this may chime but I have access to 180TB of HDD from my deceased father and I want to know if there is ever any crypto-related use case for HDD, sorry if this is a time wasting question.

The most practical use would be running your own node and downloading your copy of the blockchain, you can run a full node; This helps enforce network rules and maintains the consensus.

I think the most popular HDD minable coin in the recent times was Chia coin. It was so profitable back then, but the profitability has dwindled over the past months after people went in for the gold rush.

According to https://profit-mine.com/en/hdd, 180 TB will earn you roughly $3.5 per day, which is not worth it in my opinion
You can search for about Chia coin

Isn't bitcoin's blockchain currently about 400GB in size? Why would you need so much storage space for your own node and copy of the blockchain?

That's not too small though depending on where you live or have a computer running normally you can just plug a drive into ($1.2k a probably around half your electricity costs a year even in expensive countries).

You might just get more by selling the drives though and investing those funds (in worthy, well researched assets).

Edit: I think the failure rate of hard drives is estimated to be 10% a year and the revenue of mining is around 26% - based on buying new drives (these were very quick calculations and assuming an 8tb drive is $220).

When you download a 2 GB movie into your 2 TB disk drive, does it mean you need all the 2 TB just to store  only2 GB?
It's obvious, he will just use part of the storage to run his own node, not the whole 180 TB, the remaining part of the storage can be utilized for other things. I think that's what @Upgrade00 was implying.

Ah, I see now. I thought the extra capacity was of some benefit. Thanks for the clarification.

Well, this is not a wasting time question. Yes there are crypto-related use cases with HDD.
I guess you are looking for something to take a benefit from. You can help maintain the network but i can't tell if anything will beneficial for you. I think if you don't have a clear vision for a concept that need this big space but you can't start a benefiting project just because you have a 180tb free space .

Ah, I see now. I thought the extra capacity was of some benefit. Thanks for the clarification.
Yes it should have a great capacity. I heard about a project in which you can rent the free space you have. You can check this project: https://filecoin.io If i can wel remember, it's designed to store data, i think it should need a big space. This is just a suggestion and it's up to you to DYOR .

You can search for about Chia coin
Chia coin was launched for big mining farms only. There was no mining pools months after its launch and it requires so much time to create PLOTs.

With such a single HDD, it's not worth to mine $CHIA. In addition, there are other hardrware requirements to mine this coin.

There Are coins you can mine with HDD and store files for reward as well, Chia coin and File coin are good ones to start with but do your own research, reward will be smaller compared to if you are using graphic card for mining crypto. DYOR

The most obvious advantage of you having so much unused storage space on your computer is that you can rent it out to whoever needs it and thus make some money off of it. There are a few cryptocurrency projects in which it is possible to share available space and simultaneously receive coins for doing so. Your HDDs will be a part of decentralized cloud storage where files aren't kept on a single centralized server, like in the case of Amazon or other similar storage providers, but rather distributed among thousands of participants, which ensures relatively reliable protection from losses and makes the system resistant to censorship.

The examples of projects offering decentralized cloud storages can be found in the following article: https://crypto.news/earn-crypto-part-7-renting-out-storage-space/

On the other hand, you can always go full altruistic and use your available space to run dozens of bitcoin full nodes to support the network and provide for decentralization, better connectivity, and censorship resistance.

To answer your question... I also agree with what @Upgrade00 said, it is interesting to run your own node and download your copy of Blockchain, you will be able to run a full node and consequently it would help to enforce rules within the network itself.

Running a full node needs to extra requirement? I heard you need a high-end server and also some amount of coins to run a node successfully is this true or false because I once had an interest in running my own node but this made me stopped looking into it .

Also that running full node means privacy from central services, unlike SPV wallets that depends on central servers.

Isn't bitcoin's blockchain currently about 400GB in size? Why would you need so much storage space for your own node and copy of the blockchain?
You can also use the available memory for other things, no necessarily mean it should be used only for blockchain download.

Running a full node needs to extra requirement? I heard you need a high-end server and also some amount of coins to run a node successfully is this true or false because I once had an interest in running my own node but this made me stopped looking into it .
If you want to run a full node, the best is to download the full blockchain which will require almost 400 gigabyte of download. You can use Bitcoin Core for it or run your own Electrum server.

Running a full node needs to extra requirement? I heard you need a high-end server and also some amount of coins to run a node successfully is this true or false because I once had an interest in running my own node but this made me stopped looking into it .
@Charles-Tim, answered your question in a short and concise way.

If in case you want to run a full node, this will give you some benefits, for example privacy in some services.
But for this to happen, you need to download the entire Blockchain, which is approximately 400gb in size.

If you have any doubts about how to run a full node, I advise you to look for a tutorial here on Bitcointalk, or another possibility is for you to watch a tutorial on Youtube
