I wouldn't really assume that Ukraine is winning the war right now. I mean they are not doing bad, they are defending as well as they possibly could, but they have lost a few lands, and Russia could defend those lands easier. I think the main target of Putin is to use the war opportunity to annex some other regions as he did to Crimea but that does not mean if he has the opportunity he will not make the whole Ukraine to become Russia, but Nato is Putin's obstacle and making his ambition about this not to go as planned.
