In an attempt to defraud potential users, scammers hacked major crypto market data provider CoinMarketCap's CrypTown social network and published links to a fake token sale.

According to screenshots shared by users, the Binance-owned CoinMarketCap's verified account shared a post teasing the crypto data aggregator's token presale. "Official CoinMarketCap Presale," the post read, before asking users to click on a seemingly fake link to buy "CMC" tokens.

While CoinMarketCap has not directly addressed the incident, the data aggregator did issue a notice, warning users that it would never ask for money, private keys, or any other personal information.

"CoinMarketCap is a data aggregator media service. We are NOT hosting a Pre-Sale for CoinMarketCap Tokens. Beware of scammers impersonating us," the data aggregator said.

Meanwhile, technically, analysts argue that the scam was easy to spot.

"Intruders offered to just send money to some third-party address," Dmitry Mishunin, founder and CEO of a smart contract audit company HashEx said, adding that:

"It is unlikely that such a large company would conduct a sale without a smart contract and connecting a wallet on the site."

So far, the year has seen its fair share of the seemingly rising crypto crime trend. This can be observed in the number and the size of the recent hacks, such as the over USD 600m theft from the gaming-focused Ronin Network's, which can be categorized as one of the largest decentralized finance (DeFi) hacks ever.

I do agreed with what already said by analyst. A stupid guy will be fallen into this cheap trick by the scammers by impersonating the coinmarketcap.
I think that people can know that easily about that if the this fake token created by scammer. People can easily check it whether there was an official announcement from the coinmarketcap or not.
This said that if i think that only newbies will always be fallen into the  cheap trap like this.
I hope that people will be aware if there will be no CMC token. There must be so many awareness about this as newbies are always blindly buying anything.

It's obvious that this is a scam token but a crypto newbie with a lack of good deep thoughts will surely fall for such a trick thinking this is the next big thing in the crypto space, not doing research first in the crypto space is like putting a knife in your throat.

If a popular site is going to launch their product in the market then they will start advertising for it very earlier, they are not going to o announce and launch immediately because they need hype to sell their products. And even if the official CMC is launching their token as an investor how can you go blindly to invest on something without doing your own analysis?

Except for those who don't know cmc has no tokens will fall for this cheap scam, anyone who is very familiar with the crypto space will know coinmarketcap don't have any native token as of yet, maybe this will happen sometime in the future no one knows.

It is very surprising the effort this scammers put in to defraud people when that effort should have been directed to creating a genuine project.

...So far, the year has seen its fair share of the seemingly rising crypto crime trend...

I admit the fact that CoinMarketCap can launch its token, because it is so easy to collect hundreds of millions of dollars today, given the connection with such a major player in the cryptocurrency market as Binance. But if CoinMarketCap had really decided to sell its token, then everyone would have known about this event long before the start of the sale and there would have been an announcement posted on the rating itself.

I think it will be difficult to make fake coins in the name of CMC, especially for those who are already familiar with crypto, except for those who are new to the crypto world and don't know CMC, and if they don't analyze the fake coins.

I believe that even if there is a publication from an official account, it will not have too much impact on investors. those who have been in the market for a long time know very well how hackers can take this opportunity to advantage.
What's more, there is already an opinion regarding the parties concerned that they are not making sales. and asked to be careful.
Of course, there are concerns, but I think this situation will trap people who see it without wanting to do research first regarding the existing truth.
we have seen that several official crypto accounts have been hacked, and of course, it provides an important lesson for us.

Source:https://www.coinshots.com/news/scammers-impersonate-coinmarketcap-to-sell-fake-cmc-tokens

I did not see that twitter posts myself and i have not heard about that stuff before, but i saw such posts on coinmarketcap itself a few days ago. Coinmarketcap has a relatively new feature called "CrypTown" where everyone that has an account on coinmarketcap can make a comment to any project that is listed on coinmarketcap and indicate if he is bullish or bearish about that project and why. In that comment section i saw the official coinmarketcap account making also posts about that cmc-token presale that is happening right now and of course a link to the sale. So it seems that more than just one account of coinmarketcap was hacked. Would be interesting to know, how many people fell victim to that scam.

That's true, maybe in reality many investors who do not often analyze a project will always be trapped in this kind of scheme, we already know this situation in the past of course. Especially with popular brands such as CMC, unfortunately the incident was not handled quickly by cmc why not handled immediately, I don't understand what happened there.

As of now, over roughly 13 ETH[1] and 192 BNB[2] are lost as result of people getting deceived. The news title said it was impersonating, but noting the announcement made from the official account of CMC and on their own sites, I rather simply say the account was hacked.

It is absurd how CMC handle their own security concern. The last data leaks and now this. It's horrible.
