Just came across Turn JavaScript On topic and it reminded of one thing that you could turn JavaScript off yet would fine little to no difference in functionality of this site. Modern designs heavily depend on JavaScript.

For privacy conscious people (as it appears to be most are here), this old ass design is actually kind of blessing?

Pretty much. It's the reason why I like Bitcointalk the way it is(besides the fact that it's a pain in the ass to use on mobile). Most modern websites needs a good amount of JS for their features/functionalities that they would barely work with a Disable JavaScript plugin.

I think the forum relies heavily on php to deliver content for things it might have used Javascript for (php generally runs Server side).

I quite like how light the forum is to load too (small bandwidth needed on both ends) which ties in to the lack of use of Javascript and not many images being displayed on the forum.

(besides the fact that it's a pain in the ass to use on mobile).

I kinda got used to using it on my phone. I can understand it's problematic for reading a few pages of text but apart from that I think it's just something you can get used to (though maybe your point was you shouldn't really have to).

The user experience is probably one of the best, focused on content, rather than fancy design. Although, when it comes to customising PHP, it can be a massive ball ache, especially if it's not implemented brilliantly. So, while the user experience might be decent, when it comes to customising the code, things will take a lot longer than they would if we were using a more modern language. I guess that's one of the drawbacks.

I kinda got used to using it on my phone. I can understand it's problematic for reading a few pages of text but apart from that I think it's just something you can get used to (though maybe your point was you shouldn't really have to).
I've only ever used it on a temporary account made for when I was travelling, and the combination of terrible network connection, and the general usability on a phone was absolutely infuriating at times. For reading it's fine, but when it comes to actually editing posts or making posts that's when the usability really does annoy you.

No no reading is totally fine. The pain comes when you want to make a response and you'd have to handle multiple quotes. You know those posts that you really disagree with that you really have to refute every single line of the main post? Yea LOL.

Having the forum maintain its original software after a couple of years is a big plus, as opposed to more recent apps or websites which are updated every other day.
Privacy relevance is not the only reason, the ease of use and accessibility also adds to the user experience.

[No no reading is totally fine. The pain comes when you want to make a response and you'd have to handle multiple quotes. You know those posts that you really disagree with that you really have to refute every single line of the main post? Yea LOL.
What I usually do in such situations; after the initial quote of the full text, I copy out the full quote and paste it subsequently on my reply cropping it down to the line I need and repeating, till I'm done with that text.

It is true for everyone.

People need time to experience on a new platform, a new UI and get familiar with it. The transitional phase from old UI to new UI might be either convenient or annoying and uncomfortable. It depends on ages of users and I believe that people from 25 -30 years old and above might be keen on the current forum software. This user population can easily to adapt to a new UI/ software but I don't think most of them have such demand.

Younger user population might have demand for a new software, new UI but it does not wipe out the fact that they still need kinda transitional phase.

Although most want us to finally get a new forum given how long it has been since it was announced that they are working on it, I do not believe that the new forum will have an impact on the quality of content and the improvements that would go in that direction. New generations are looking for something modern, with countless options of which they will not use even 10%, and if someone says they will not use the forum because they do not have a mobile view or it does not look like FB or some other social network - then it is clear that they are not here because they want to learn something or share experiences, but for some other reasons.

For privacy conscious people (as it appears to be most are here), this old ass design is actually kind of blessing?

Maybe that's why there is still no new forum, our admin is worried about our safety Wink

Yep, it's totally doable don't get me wrong. It's just a huge pain in the arse especially if you're quoting a topic/reply with a length that's long enough for you to might as well call it a full-fledged article.

It takes longer time than expected but theymos said 2 years ago that the new forum software is mostly finished. Just a bit more improvement and testing as well as data transition. The most important part is data transition and testing of the new forum software.

I know there are months forum members were hyped with new forum software set up and testing but in latest months (~ more than 1 year), it is almost disappeared. I am not sure why but it does not help for a launch of the new forum software.

I totally agree. The most importance is why they joined the forum and what they are looking for in the forum. UI is just a bit minus or plus point among other factors.

Honestly, I visited some testing forums based on a new forum software and I don't like its UI. I am not sure how do old forum members feel about it? Have you ever visited such testing forums? If yes, what do you feel?

I have to admit that at first glance I wasn’t impressed with the look, but I’m sure the new forum has some advantages over the one we’re using now. Perhaps the biggest advantage will be that the new forum will be mobile-friendly, which is still the biggest objection that could be read in recent years. This disadvantage is not a problem for me because I do not use the forum on a smartphone, but for some others who mostly use such an approach, it would certainly be something that would make it easier for them to use the forum.

Either way I will adapt to each new interface and new features, although I don't mind it staying the way it is now.

The skins/ themes are always changeable from the front or backend. Some forums do allow users to choose from a set of skins, although those are rarer.

After all, a forum is just a directory of subforums. Some visual enhancements, just like any other forum users come across. The core flow remains the same.

It is not too difficult to have options for UI such as Classic / Modern. Classic is the current UI we have in this forum. Modern is the new one for Epochtalk ie. However, you forgot an important point that many things related to the new forum software with which many new features will be integrated into a modern forum. It possibly brings some troubles to switch between Classic and Modern UI and at the same time still well maintains new features.
