It's ironic that the No. 1 nation on the list accepted Bitcoin as a legal tender, while in the second Bitcoin is not accepted by the government and actually is banned in bank transactions. This goes to show that the while government acceptance helps to make citizens more receptive of Bitcoin, the citizens can choose to adopt it regardless.

I do not know much about the other countries on the list, I have read that Switzerland is friendly to Bitcoin. And in Canada, there was an incident recently where the gov't was freezing accounts, could that play a part in the search boasts?

It does make sense that the word "Bitcoin" has been Googled the most by the El Salvadorian people, because their government forced a law on them that included a technology that influenced their daily lives and that most of them knew virtually nothing about.

It is also not strange that the Nigerians are very curious about this technology, because Nigeria are perceived as the "Scam Capitol" of the world. We know Bitcoin's pseudo anonymity provide some hiding place for criminal activities, so some of these people are actively looking for a payment method that cannot be traced.  Roll Eyes

Since Nigeria is the developing country, they will look the new technology for the earning. It’s good to hear,Nigerian are very eager to the technology.I had seen the Nigerian was the second nation who had googled the bitcoin,it was very interesting one.The government of the El Salvador should move the bitcoin as the soft corn in their economy. This forcing to people will not works anymore.

This is interesting because it's all over the place. I was expecting maybe lesser developed countries to be more interested, but that also goes hand in hand with how many people have access to the internet in those countries. I can't really make much out of this besides the fact that this diversity shows us that crypto is attracting people from all spheres and classes, and that's a good thing.

It's normal to see a ranking where Elsavador is in the first position, because Elsavador has legalized bitcoin and its people are trying to find info about Bitcoin so they don't experience errors in transactions.
so that could be the main reason why so many searches occur in elsavador

I am not so sure that's the main reason for Nigeria being so high on the list. AFAIK, Nigeria has one of the biggest percentage of the unbanked people in the world so of course cryptocurrencies are a way for many to pay everyday stuff, hence such popularity.

I mean, using your logic that would make countries like Slovenia, Switzerland and Austria scam paradise as well and if you check the crime stats you will see that those are some of the most secure countries in the world.

This is interesting because it's all over the place. I was expecting maybe lesser developed countries to be more interested, but that also goes hand in hand with how many people have access to the internet in those countries. This list comes from Google trends, and the way its calculated is that it measures the popularity of specific search relative to all the other searches so its not really important how many people have access to the internet. This is how it looks when it comes to top 5

Values are calculated on a scale from 0 to 100, where 100 is the location with the most popularity as a fraction of total searches in that location, a value of 50 indicates a location which is half as popular. A value of 0 indicates a location where there was not enough data for this term.

Note: A higher value means a higher proportion of all queries, not a higher absolute query count. So a tiny country where 80% of the queries are for "bananas" will get twice the score of a giant country where only 40% of the queries are for "bananas".

There's no such thing about criteria's  on what countries should be the ones who do have the right on making searches. You could really anticipate that it would be on developing countries but surprisingly to see on the list

seeing that there are top or rich countries are really that involved and its good to see in about with the recognition which we are really that needing.

These results do really shows that recognition and adoption is on the move or really that increasing as years passing by.

Can you provide us with the data source so that we know how to calculate and then determine whether these values are real or biased:

  • Population vs. research percentage: The population density varies between countries, as 1 million represents half of the population of a country, while it represents less than 10% in a second country.
  • Search Vocabulary vs. Other Vocabulary: Were the most common words in a country searched for?
  • Research period: When this data was taken.
  • Correlation of that period to the price of bitcoin: the price of bitcoin when the research was conducted.

All of the above factors affect the searches and the results received from them.

As I said in my previous post, data source for that graphic is Google Trends (something that OP probably should have mentioned) so you might wanna check it out for yourself and it also has an explanation how they calculate the numbers. Here is the link for the last 7 days but you can adjust for any time frame you want https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=now%207-d&q=Bitcoin

I'd expect people that are being suppressed to have even more interest in escaping that. Its been proven multiple times in the past, and I believe it was Edward Bernays' biggest message overall which he basically said not to limit the people outright, but instead give them a choice while pumping out propaganda to influence them.

Outright banning Bitcoin isn't effective it would be much better to do it like the West does; allow it, regulate it, but pump out stories which might not exactly have any truth to them. For example, we've seen it recently where there's basically been a barrage of news stories on how energy inefficient Bitcoin is, and how it's the leading contributor, which is absolutely nonsense, but I have seen it in the titles of a few poor news sources.

Before clicking on this thread, I was expecting countries from Africa to rank pretty highly not only because its banned in some of those areas, but for me Bitcoin is the best opportunity to escape corruption, as well as the rat race of earning pennies, while in the long run those earnings being mitigated by rising inflation.

Nations with highest figures of Googling in their search don't mean that they have biggest Bitcoin communities.

Because there are barriers from searching for information to actually take it, feel good about it, and decide to invest in Bitcoin. You can compare it with stats for Bitcoin node distribution for example.

Quite possibly the opposite. El Salvador's increase could be just because a lot of people wasn't aware of Bitcoin before the recent news. Then the other countries could be just looking for information on it, rather than already being part of a "Bitcoin community" as you put it.

At the end of the day there's no significance on why, trends are trends, and at least it's indicative of a countries sort of perception to Bitcoin, whether hostile or not. The trend itself isn't indicative of it really, it's when looking at supportive evidence that you can conclude. For example, a country that has banned it, but still has a lot of people searching up, suggests that the people of that country are looking for ways to beat the system potentially or they don't have full faith in their countries decisions or it could be in direct reaction to the banning of a cryptocurrency that they've never heard of or understood.

So, while these trends aren't painting the whole picture, when you look at supporting evidence, you can kind of get a overall feel for how that country feels towards Bitcoin, without actually living there.

Nations with highest figures of Googling in their search don't mean that they have biggest Bitcoin communities.

This is very true, we can't make a conclusion from this type of statistics. But just to give an idea how each nation has the interest on bitcoin. This is actually vague study but that's fine. It also shows that whether a country has prohibitions regarding crypto transactions like Nigeria, it doesn't stop its people to search for this new currency in the market. Because they can always participate in this market via p2p and other trading platforms. It means, the government can't totally stop its people from joining this market. They will always find a way how to get a hold of crypto.

Not surprised about it with El Salvador.

It's their legal tender and despite that legality, a lot of their people still not aware of it and against to it. And that's why they have to do their own researches to understand it.

Well, that's a progress then if the citizens from there are doing their initiative of making their "DYOR".

It’s no surprise to see El Salvador at the top.
I mean they were the first nation to legalise the coin.
So it has to be El Salvador in the top, as all the citizens might always try to browse and learn more about Bitcoins.
And i am too not surprised to see Nigeria in the second place.
Nigeria is famous for scamming people in Bitcoins P2P platform (not targeting all Nigerians). So definitely they deserves the second place.
Moreover OP, can you tell us how did you made the list ? Or what’s the source to it?
Waiting for a reply .

Damn, I never expected to not see countries that are very pro bitcoin in this list specially El Salvador. It seems like the people of El Salvador really aren't that curious with bitcoin and may have been just forced to adapt because of the government. With this, we can easily understand that mass adoption cannot be forced. Only when bitcoin and the other altcoins don't get talked crap about by influential people will we see a genuine increase on the number of mass adoption around the world. And only in such conditions should governments try to slowly legalize bitcoin and not as fast as El Salvador which has caused a failure.

Not really that ironic. Whether you accept Bitcoin or ban Bitcoin, it means people would want to know about Bitcoin. To anybody who hasn't heard of Bitcoin yet or to one who has heard but hasn't really known it, a ban or an acceptance as a legal tender would somehow pique his/her curiosity about Bitcoin. That would lead him/her to search for it online. This is why a criticism, a tirade, a ban, even a condemnation of Bitcoin is still a promotion of Bitcoin so to speak.

But trying to know and understand Bitcoin is not adoption, although there is a probability that learning about Bitcoin leads to embracing it.

Quote
I do not know much about the other countries on the list, I have read that Switzerland is friendly to Bitcoin. And in Canada, there was an incident recently where the gov't was freezing accounts, could that play a part in the search boasts?

It must have contributed to it. The City of Lugano in Switzerland has hit the headlines recently for accepting Bitcoin as a legal currency. In Canada, on the other hand, Bitcoin came into the fore during the truckers' protest because the banks suddenly froze bank accounts connected to the protesters. Bitcoin became an alternative for donations. In both stories, Bitcoin must have made a lot curious and led them to search for it on Google.

It makes sense that El Salvador is at the top. Their people googling what bitcoin is and to learn more about it since it is a legal tender over there. Nigerians seems to be very active with bitcoin. I have seen lots of Nigerian traders, but most of them have a very bad reputation sadly. Didn't their government put a ban on bitcoin trading or something and was freezing all bank accounts that was involved with crypto currencies? But I am really surprised not to see Russia on the list. Was expecting everyone to rush after bitcoin once their economy started to collapse. But yeah I guess they don't need bitcoin anymore since their economy already started to recover.

Anyone notice though about the mis spelling of "El Salvador"?

Just nuisance though, I mean you present the data but then got it wrong?

As others have said, it's no surprise that El Salvador and Nigeria are on top. Nigeria has been on the top of the list years ago and obviously are very active in trading. I remember people doing arbitrage as well and selling bitcoin at a premium in Nigeria. Surprised to see Singapore, just a tiny nation in South East Asia, but very rich and the population are composed of young professionals and maybe that is the reason why they are in the list ahead of countries like South Korea and Japan in that region.

El Salvador deserves to be on top because it is a country that legalizes bitcoin and its people should know and learn about bitcoin as a whole because bitcoin has become a means of payment there they should know and google is the best for further discovery.
Google is a place for many people and all countries to look for research and so on related to bitcoin, bitcoin continues to grow and is popular which makes many people feel curious and try to find it on google.

El Salvador should be at the top of the list because of how its inhabitants use cryptocurrencies. In the case of Nigeria, the second country on the list, I believe that Bitcoin and cryptocurrency are accepted and used by its citizens despite the fact that they have not been legalized by the Nigerian government. Although it is not completely prohibited, some citizens obtain a means of survival through crypto trading, and P2P transactions are another source of income for some of its citizens.

Did you mean Nigeria? Bitcoin is not banned by government in Nigeria, it is only banned by their central bank. Nigerian government are not saying anything about bitcoin, this is the reason their central bank have such power which can be overridden by the government power if they pass a bill in favour of bitcoin.

Roll Eyes
If Nigeria is not existing in the world, that does not eliminate scam and other criminal activities, perhaps the level of scam activities in countries like US and other developed countries is also high. Ransomware attack is never rampant in Africa unlike in continents like Asia and Americas. Criminal activities differs and can be rampant in one country or continent than another. The more there are people existing in the world, the more there will be scam and other criminal activities. The best approach is to know how to avoid scam.

If you want to know more about crypto scam report, you can read the 2022 Chainanalysis crypto scam report and see how you cannot centralized it only on a single country.

You do not have to provide the correct information
https://go.chainalysis.com/2022-crypto-crime-report.html

Before clicking on this thread, I was expecting countries from Africa to rank pretty highly not only because its banned in some of those areas, but for me Bitcoin is the best opportunity to escape corruption, as well as the rat race of earning pennies, while in the long run those earnings being mitigated by rising inflation.
This is the reason people in Africa do not save money in their fiat, if I should be truthful about this as it is happening in real life, Africans like cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and also ones like USDT and some other stable coins (stable coins like USDT can be frozen even on noncustododial wallet, it is not a good coin because it is centralized). African that know about cryptocurrencies like it because they prefer currencies like dollar, euro and pound because it is a hedge for them against inflation, they can easily access it than going to bank to open a domiciliary account. Dollar, euro and pound face inflation too, but inflation is worst in Africa and they see the developed nations fiat as a hedge against the inflation in their country while they buy stable coins as they are pegged with currencies like dollar. The reason they like bitcoin also, especially during bull market year.

I think it's unfair since you're search the last 7 days only, not the entire years. If you set on a previous month, previous year, or entire years, I doubt the number one still El Salvador because the high demand of El Salvador started when Bitcoin get legal tendered in their countries.

Also not everyone use google as their main browser, google is suck and can spy your activities.

What is another interesting with this list is that United States of America does not figure in the top 10...though it does not mean that USA is that very important in the whole cryptocurrency market. among the top 10, it is Nigeria that can be a little bit more surprising all because we know that the government in there is not that so friendly with cryptocurrency and they barred the involvement of the banking industry with it so it is hard for people to buy and convert crypto with the fiat money...but they can instead do P2P which is actually burgeoning in that country.

This is exactly what is going on with many of the countries, i think we have to be practical here and let use Nigeria as an example, am proudly a Nigerian and I really know about what is ongoing currently in the country as regards bitcoin and crypto at large, i also agree that Nigeria had a second place in the most search word on google (bitcoin) the government here does not ban cryptocurrency in it entirety on the citizens, it only ban the commercial banks from having any crypto related transactions, that's the first instance, secondly ibsee how desirous are the Nigerian youth in soughting  out on how to go about in bitcoin because bitcoin is the most pronounced name inbthe country when it comes to digital economy and i can see how many citizens got eager to know more about it despite we are rated the highest in Africa and top users of some exchanges.

The citizens have gone far beyond the expectations of the government in dealing with bitcoin as an investment and a good source of value while the young adults are fully participating through the opportunities in the bitcoin trading using different platforms, i also realized the need by the youths to earn a sustainable living through bitcoin in which the government and their E-Naira CBDC launched could not make any difference in alleviating poverty and unemployment in the country, the country currency keep depreciating and inflation hitting every nooks and crannies, it experience recession some years back before the change in power the makes a slight difference, i also understand its a developing country but you need to see the rate of how the citizens are soughting out for a good living through the role of bitcoin in their economy considering it also as most populous in Africa, why wouldn't it have the highest search of bitcoin on the google and beyond.

It's not very useful that it's just one image that has a huge watermark on it, and the link is just to the website itself. It would be much better to see at least a big image of the map, if not an interactive map. And to see what exactly was accounted for in this search results. Maybe 7 days isn't enough time to be representative of the regions, for example. And it's natural that people whose native language isn't English and where Bitcoin is not written the way it's written in English would largely google it in their native languages, but it should still count for a fair infographic, IMO.

btc_angela: I'm definitely not surprised at Singapore. I'm Southeast Asian and they, while clearly smack in the centre and a member of our region, are alike us in every bit except living standards and economic development indicators -- the likeliest blockchain hub in our part of the world and almost certainly the most able to adapt to such needs.

They're big on blockchain and crypto ALREADY and bigger still on fintech, I'm just not sure if Bitcoin itself would appeal most -- for reasons only that they like risk more than certainty. And yes, I welcome any Singaporeans to disagree Wink

This is a fact that not everyone uses google but i was expecting countries with huge populations coming on top but incidentally it was El Salvador and then comes Nigeria, Georgia, Turkey and Netherlands. Majority are using VPN and hence i doubt all these evaluation can be accurate because China is in the list and i am sure majority use some sort of proxies or VPN and i did not find India in that list.

Just to remark, once more, what @Rikafip has highlighted on this thread: The information that Google Trends displays is an indicator, but it is expressed in relative terms, not absolute terms. That means that one country could be making the most searches for bitcoin worldwide, but still appear far from the top.

That could easily be the case of USA, which appears in the 18th position on Google Trends (page through the list) for the same timeframe. What’s more, USA figures with a rating of 13, for 100 for El Salvador. That means that, in the given timeframe:

- El Salvador has the highest ratio of searches for the term "bitcoin" in relation to all searches on Google made within the country. Thus the 100 indicator attributed to the maximum ratio, regadless of the ratio value itself (i.e. 100 could be equating 100000 searches for "bitcoin"/50000000 searches in El Salvador).

- El Salvador searches for the term "bitcoin" is, proportionally, over seven times more than in USA (100/13), in relation to all the searches made within each of these countries on Google. That is, therefore, in relative terms. In absolute terms (number of actual searches), USA may be well above El Salvador.

Also note how, by checking the "include regions with a small search volume" check box (below the map on Google Trends), we see how the Republic of Central Africa figures in second position very close to El Salvador. RCA is small in terms of population (close to 5M), and on top of that, it’s ratio of internet penetration is only of around 7,1%. Nevertheless, due to recent known events, they are likely searching for bitcoin way more these days than before, thus the high relative ratio in the searches and the second position in relative terms (despite the small search volume that Google indicates, which means that, overall, the absolute value is not really that big).

Note: I’m not sure how legit the image in the OP is in terms of forum rules:  The OP lacks referencing the source (which is Google Trends set with a 7 day view and a worldwide search), and it’s also providing publicity to the OP’s company outside of the usual legit boards, which in this case does not provide any other purpose nor enriches the information.

I think it's unfair since you're search the last 7 days only, not the entire years. If you set on a previous month, previous year, or entire years, I doubt the number one still El Salvador because the high demand of El Salvador started when Bitcoin get legal tendered in their countries.
Well, this topic is about the last week and no one is stopping you from sharing the results from the last few months/years etc.

Also not everyone use google as their main browser, google is suck and can spy your activities.
Not everyone of course but vast majority of people do use Google so results are probably pretty accurate.

Since OP just shared that graphic with his company name and never bothered to leave a reply to any of the posts, whole purpose of this topic was probably to promote the said website and nothing else. And yeah, it would be fair to mention the source of data but as we know bitcointalk is very lenient when it comes to even blatant stealing of someone else's images, let alone this.

I don't believe the people of El Salvador were forced to adopt Bitcoin. They have the option to use their local Fiat as they do with Bitcoin and if you say they they are continually making research to understand Bitcoin more which leads to what is presented in the chat, I'd agree and as for Nigeria, we do know that the Government has not been able to provide the enabling economy for the ever-growing youths to thrive hence the surge into cryptocurrency so no surprise there to see Nigerian on the top of that list.

It would be interesting to see two kinds of statistics: in proportional and general numbers. So, despite the small, less populated countries which highlight themselves in bitcoin key search, like El Salvador and Nigeria, we could also see the countries where bitcoin has more enthusiasts and curious people about it.

Anyway, in my opinion I don't think the statistics presented by google are accurate, because if you take a poor country where only a small portion of the society has internet access, it's likely to see a higher number of bitcoin searches, because that is only the educated parcel of the population who have access to google. While there are another countries where vast majority of population has access to internet, including the uneducated ones, so it's likely the number of bitcoin searches will be severely diluted among so many other worthless searches about celebrities, gossips, tv shows and so on... This way, these countries are never going to be shown on the statistics with positive results, although there are a much superior number of bitcoin enthusiasts there in every aspects possible and imaginable (even proportionally speaking), if compared to the top ranked countries.

Your theory would make sense if top consists of mostly poor countries where not many people have Internet access, but that's simply not true. Only 2 out of those 10 (El Salvador and Nigeria) can be called poor, and if you expand that list to top 30, only 3 more are in that group of "poor" countries. Also, I think that even in poor countries people nowadays have access to internet as it's not 2000s anymore, now all you need is a $100 smartphone to be able to access the internet. Not of course as fast and stable like in developed countries, but access nevertheless.

Another thing, keep in mind that Google has an option to exclude countries/regions with low volume (countries like Cayman Island, Luxembourg and various tiny island-states). For those interested, below is the full list for the 7 days period, including the countries with the low search volume (you will notice that those countries don't have the rating in this list but can see it if you check the link below the list).

I do not find it ironic at all given that the people of El Salvador are most likely curious about the effects of accepting BTC as a form of legal tender to their country. In addition, there are also some people there who are unaware of the existence of cryptocurrencies, so it is but obvious but for them to search about it to know on why their government adopted such change to their current transaction system.

I am surprised that the countries in Asia only included Singapore on where BTC was googled the most. What happened to China and their support?

That list could soon be expended with the Central African Republic as the country has become the world's second nation that has adopted Bitcoin as legal tender. The only problem is that very few people have electricity there, let alone mobile phones and internet. Judging by some stats I found, around 11% of the population has access to the Internet. That's a bit more than 550.000 citizens. 14% of the total population have electricity in their homes.

Check my previous post and you will find more countries including the Asian ones, the one OP shared was only the top 10. Regarding the China missing on the least, reason is simple: Google is banned in China.

That list could soon be expended with the Central African Republic as the country has become the world's second nation that has adopted Bitcoin as legal tender. As a matter of fact, Central African Republic is the 2nd on the full list with the 94 score meaning bitcoin term was almost as popular as in El Salvador. The reason why it's missing on the list in the first post is because Google excludes countries with low search volume and as you pointed out that only 11% of the population has access to the Internet no wonder that their search volume is low.

Roll Eyes

You don't conclude things in your own way, you write without fact's, so what do you ja e to back your writings that Nigeria is highly seen as scam capital ?
Go Doyr and you'll see nations ranked before Nigeria. If you know the number bof people that relied on Bitcoin and Crypto during the Covid pandemic,a lotta folks sold coins to fend for families. The central Bank of Nigeria are chiefly responsible for the ban of Bitcoin and other p2p transactions not the government but I see no reason why the government can't come into this though. With the high rate of inflation and corruption Nigeria do need too rely on this bitcoin.
Expecting a change in hands in the government next year as the new aspirants will be tasked to adopt bitcoin else no voting! Period!
Wagwan with them South Americans, Australia and Antarctica, seven continents huh ? Ain't no awareness down that ends ?

so far there is no criteria for countries that frequently visit and search for bitcoin, every country will definitely have a search for bitcoin, in the picture elsavador is the highest country in the search trend, logically one thing is reasonable because elsavador is the first country to adopt bitcoin as a means of payment. legal

Google trends has never been an indicator of anything and almost all the conclusions made based on it have been wrong. For example take the search term "bitcoin", you are are only considering it in English not in other languages but make your conclusion globally; whereas people in different languages would be mostly searching it in their own language. For example the following shows how people would search about bitcoin in Farsi:
https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=now%207-d&q=%D8%A8%DB%8C%D8%AA%20%DA%A9%D9%88%DB%8C%D9%86
Or in China the words seem to be "比特币".

Unfortunately Google doesn't give you number of searches but only a percentage wise comparison so you can't even compare the different terms with each other.

El Salvador deserves to be on top because it is a country that legalizes bitcoin and its people should know and learn about bitcoin as a whole because bitcoin has become a means of payment there they should know and google is the best for further discovery.
Is El Salvador up to 7 million people?

US is over 300 million
Nigerian is over 200 million

Bitcoin adoption in both countries is much.

Do people think countries like that will have lower numbers of people searching for bitcoin on google? I doubt that. Just thought about this now, I think it would be good for us to know the methodology used by google, I do not think it is accurate.

Unfortunately Google doesn't give you number of searches but only a percentage wise comparison so you can't even compare the different terms with each other.
If the search result is moyt in number of people, that is not accurate if only percentage is used. The number of people and the percentage can show if only the number of people that serached are used or if compared to the population of the countries.

With this search engine we can't come to the conclusion about any form of trend change in specific region. It is just the indication that global population is looking for bitcoin and associated form of investment. We can't consider this for any of the market changes, because people try to find what is bitcoin through their own language. So, there'll be variation in the result. To my understanding countries holding the most number of users will be having the highest count. It is quite surprised there is only one Asian country among the list.

Honestly, I am not shocked that USA is not in the list. Main reason for that is the fact that USA is vast and if it was one of the most googled things ever then we would have bitcoin a lot higher. This also proves that there is a huge gap in the system that we could still fill. Imagine USA and UK being in this list, that would mean that 2 of the richest nations of the world getting heavily into crypto.

Today, we have them out of this list and still have coinbase and kraken like places that make so much money, tomorrow when it's on this list, or we have majority of those nations involved? We are going to have trillions for sure and that will help us all, even if we do not live there.

So despite the fact that Bitcoin was banned in Nigeria, we still came second on the top search list about Bitcoin on Google?. Thats actually cool, I'm proud of my guys because they never take last in tech-related things.

I could see two sets of people arguing about bitcoin here, some saying Bitcoin is banned in Nigeria, while others saying it's wasn't banned in Nigeria, but it was the central bank who restricted banks from crypto-related activities, because as for me, I see no difference about that, because as long as I know, restricting is the same thing as banning.

Because I can proudly say no Nigerian can stand on the street of Nigeria to say he or she is a crypto trader and won't be harassed by members of the Special Antirobbery Squad agency "SARS". Because I know the country I'm living in, because once people see a young guy looking nice, dressing well, and driving a clean good car, the whole community tags him as a yahoo boy, which is very bad. So you see young crypto traders hiding their identity just in other not to be called bad names.

So I will like to ask this question to those who say Bitcoin is not banned in Nigeria
1. Why is there no shop on the street of Nigeria where you could buy bitcoin?

2. Why did the only 2 Bitcoin ATMs in Nigeria located in Lagos stop operation the moment CBN announced the ban?

Drop your answer...

As long as I know, Bitcoin is banned in Nigeria.

I would say the report is not exact because there are many other people who will use a VPN and change their location by using it so we cannot make sure where they are from, and many bitcoiners will do it because they do care about the privacy, for example, so how can we make sure about the location and nationality of the people who use services such as VPN? however, since there are many investors and bitcoiners in India I saw expecting to see this country at least among the top 10 countries. but still seeing El Salvador on the top of the list is not surprising for me at all.

As long as I know, Bitcoin is banned in Nigeria.
We are always skeptical about bitcoin bans because we don't trust the media that reports them. They have lied so much that it's like the boy who cried wolf. For example most of the bans they've reported has been a very common thing where government prohibits "banks" from investing in bitcoin not regular people. Or another common case was banning ICOs but the media reported that as banning bitcoin.

Thats fair result considering El Salvador is like legal adopter of the bitcoin, people might be searching multiple times a day regarding bitcoin, local stores accepting it, best way to spend it in the El Salvador. From around the globe people might be searching about bitcoin and its use case with the El Salvador. I am also not surprised with Nigeria being on top of list since they also had mega changes in association with the acceptance of bitcoin. With the time Nigeria's had to look after escape routes considering Nigerian currency was inflating out of hands! I am surprised in down way that USA  as whole and Canada are not that strong countries in terms of bitcoin searches. How is it even possible?

this comes for 7 days of searching ?

Why not try the One Whole Month and share it to us, because 1 week might be a coincidence and not really a statistics .

But even though ?I respect the result because EL Salvador is the very first country that totally adopt and use Bitcoin as legal tender so no wonder why they are on top .

For example most of the bans they've reported has been a very common thing where government prohibits "banks" from investing in bitcoin not regular people. Or another common case was banning ICOs but the media reported that as banning bitcoin.

So actually now, who is to be blamed, the government or the media, because as for me I blame both parties because there is supposed to be a system which checkmates and regulates what the media airs to the public because the media are the mouthpiece of the government, they are the people through which the government passes information to the common man on the street.
So if the media has passed a wrong information to the public, what did the Nigerian government do??? They did absolutely nothing, thats why they are also to be blame.

Because imagine if the government had grant access to banks for crypto trading and buying and selling, it would have actually reduced the rate of poverty and unemployment in this country, because imagine if Emeka or Obinna or John could be making the least #5000 to #10,000 daily from crypto arbitrage, do you think such person will still involve himself in crime or either wait for government to provide job,???
I guess the answer is NO.

Not surprised about it with El Salvador.

It's their legal tender and despite that legality, a lot of their people still not aware of it and against to it. And that's why they have to do their own researches to understand it.

Well, that's a progress then if the citizens from there are doing their initiative of making their "DYOR".
A country having high number of Bitcoin google search does not mean that they have higher number of Bitcoin holders or community ok that country. Having a huge number of Bitcoin search can be as a result of high curiosity to know what Bitcoin is all about by the citizens of that particular region. Bitcoin is spreading and more people are getting to know about it every single day.

Most advance country already know about Bitcoin and the uses that is why they have lesser numbers compared to most developing countries that has huge Bitcoin google search due to people getting to know about it.

This is so much an argument that I never did expect and you've got a point made for sure as there could be some bias to the way in which this data is been collated and sumed up to give an overview of the whole.

Although, its hard to agree with the above argument conclusively as, we've got translators in recent times and even more commonly. Google too has a translating tool and possibly could step in for cases of language bias in course of accumulation and give a perspective that isn't the norm for many parts of the world.

Could this be true as, its just an idea in my head at the moment!
Given the fact as to the origin of the study and from the many that speaks or uses English, even application wise, we can't completely rule out the study, can we!

Here is a quote from Google trends that explains how they calculate the value:
Quote
Note: A higher value means a higher proportion of all queries, not a higher absolute query count. So a tiny country where 80% of the queries are for "bananas" will get twice the score of a giant country where only 40% of the queries are for "bananas".

I can't swear since I am not competent in SEO but as I know we can determine the search volume of each keyword in each country via Google Keyword Planner and websites similar to Ahrefs & Semrush. But in order to determine the most possible accurate statistics, we need to take into account the official and widely spoken non-national languages of our targeted countries.

This is why I have always thought that while reaching legal tender status is without a doubt good, bitcoin was designed to operate regardless of the opinion the governments of the world may have about it.

And if the economic situation becomes even worse then I would not be surprised to see many countries banning bitcoin, however if bitcoin at that point in time is a more reliable currency than the fiat options available to them then people will use it regardless of the legality of bitcoin at that point and the consequences they may suffer, so when we see it from that perspective it is not that rare to see Nigeria as the second place on the list.

Nigeria is country that is very curious about any thing that will make life simple and comfortable, they like been first for everything concerning them, i think was a list over one year now or two years that stated that Nigerian is the most African country that uses bitcoin for transaction purposes or transaction related, the only thing is that bitcoin is receiving attack from government to any country is well known or a country that wants to adopt it values

I am assuming this is the most google searched per person ratio..as there is no way that all of these places have searched for bitcoin more so than the United States has.. Of course the United States has a ton more people and it would be much easier for the United States as a whole to out search most if not all of these places.  I wish this was a bit more clear as to how these numbers came about. Still very interesting stuff!

The rest of the countries in the list are I can say well developed already but I am surprised that most of their people still don't have an idea on how btc works. It could mean that they are already contented on what fiat has to offer or they have a less trust, and interest in bitcoin before.

This is a sign that it is time to move on and start using cryptocurrencies, for example in the USA, where bitcoin is legal, people are not searching about this topic as much as other countries that are not so friendly with cryptocurrencies and also have some restrictions.

You are right, these numbers are not absolute number of searches but rather relative to all other searches in each country. here is the official explanation from Google trends. In the link below you can also see the explanation how values or scaled.

A higher value means a higher proportion of all queries, not a higher absolute query count. So a tiny country where 80% of the queries are for "bananas" will get twice the score of a giant country where only 40% of the queries are for "bananas".

United States are lower on the list due other reasons, you might wanna check what i answered to ChiBitCTy.

Roll Eyes
Have you ever been scammed by a Nigerian before?
Is there a record of any forum user as we have it here with claims to have been scammed by a Nigerian?
Are there Nigerians active or banned on the forum to have scammed any known user?
If YES to any of these, then am truly sorry!

I believe there are one of such fraudulent people in every nation and not just Nigeria. Why then should the name scam but so closely tide with the Nigerian people. The virtues expressed by Nigerians on the forum should be given a chance to breath. It becomes very dehumanising for a people's effort to live right be sunk in the sands of some uncultured claims and we are expected to accept that.

Africa is a continent that comprises mostly of the world's third world countries (developing and under developed countries). We tend to struggle a lot and are hit by certain world changing innovations late, our bright minds are always looking for means of a better life elsewhere and as such, we continue to struggle over everything including our government.
I can tell you that that situation in most African nations, Nigeria inclusive is an attempt to escape a corrupt and unjust government. This is largely the reason that I can accord the stats as is presented in OP other than the assumptions of the claims in the quote above.

Haven't said that for Nigera, what then becomes the reason for the nations in 3rd, 4th and 5th places. Nigerians are doing there best and some day, we would be recognised for good efforts the majority of us put in to ensure a better world for our neighbours and the rest of humanity.
Lets not throw stones, Nigerians are good people!

It does make sense that the word "Bitcoin" has been Googled the most by the El Salvadorian people, because their government forced a law on them that included a technology that influenced their daily lives and that most of them knew virtually nothing about.
I'll also like to recount that in situations of learning, humans tends to be curious a lot as to why something is imposed on them, why is it celebrated, why is it hated and more of those than when it's just allowed to slide.
This could be the story for El-Salvador and the search seems okay with me. At least for a 7days result and am particularly proud of Nigeria for making that mark, even without the government's approval of cryptocurrency.

Bukele may have not directly forced the people but the people or businesses who denied acceptance of bitcoin as payment have obviously been put in huge social pressure since most have agreed into this "new thing." And the reason is because "he himself made a grandiose promise to his citizens that adopting Bitcoin would digitize the economy, decrease dependence on the U.S. dollar, lower remittance fees(which accounts for about 20% of the country’s gross domestic product) and drive investment." With these, people would have more likely had no choice but to follow the crowd either for the hope of a better business return or for the sake of not being singled out by the majority.

And yeah, with the current circumstance of the Nigerian people, they really don't have that much of a choice but to adapt into the changing times or to diversify their methods to make ends meet. It would be nice if the government supported this and made some free seminars to teach the youth about the opportunities that this industry has to offer.

I am interested in number 1 and number 2 in the list.

Number one - El Salvador
This people has adopted bitcoin already and they are searching the Google to ensure they learn how to use what they have adopted. So, what they are probably searching is how to use bitcoin for payment etc.

Number two - Nigeria.
Nigeria government has not adopted bitcoin, infact they have placed a ban on it and ask banks to block individuals local bank account who joins bitcoin.
Upon the law, the intimidation by the law enforcement agents by extorting individuals into crypto, yet more Nigerians are still eager to understand what bitcoin is all about

I do agree that the place for El Salvador really does look great, I think it would definitely mean a lot to people there to learn more about it because they have to learn how to live with it in their lives.

However, what we could consider Nigeria to be a developing nation, they are also very greatly involved in crypto as well, when there were talks about the government making it illegal there were uprisings online and they managed to get them to back pedal a bit and now it is legal, which caused a lot of people to google it because it was all over the news. You have to realize just because it's good investment wouldn't make things googled a lot, it requires some other big news as well.

Seems legit. El salvador is in the top list because this country have fully adopted bitcoin and many people on that country still have no idea about bitcoin so they search it on google but there might be some that already some knowledge on bitcoin yet still want to learn more for them to improve it. Second on the list is the country of Nigeria. It's a developing country and bitcoin can be a good source of income to them, that is why many people are now searching the term on google only to learn and to get started as soon as possible.

The rest of the countries in the list are I can say well developed already but I am surprised that most of their people still don't have an idea on how btc works. It could mean that they are already contented on what fiat has to offer or they have a less trust, and interest in bitcoin before.

At least there's a place that did took risk on making it as a legal tender. It do really opens other countries or places that this thing could be that possible although there are lots of talks and issues about
failure on what El salvador is currently experience or seeing that much that it wasnt really that effective than it should be but i couldnt really that make out some conclusions too or impressions
since it was just still on months time and its too early for us to make those words or say that they had eventually failed on this one.

That's a weird thing to say considering the huge volatility that exists in crypto trading specially when you consider how manipulate the altcoin market is and how many people lose money in shitcoin pump and dumps. Don't get me started on the token scams that are very common these days (ICOs, IEOs, STOs, DeFi, NFTs,...). If anything these things would harm the economy and increase crime rate.

Translation is only used when the thing you want to read is not already available in your own language or you don't trust their translation and want to read the original text. For example if you wanted to read the official statement of Chinese government about cryptocurrencies you would go to the gov. site and use Google translate but if you want to search "what is bitcoin" you can just search it in your own language and there is a good chance you would find better content that way (depends on the topic and language).

Number two - Nigeria.
Nigeria government has not adopted bitcoin, infact they have placed a ban on it and ask banks to block individuals local bank account who joins bitcoin.
Upon the law, the intimidation by the law enforcement agents by extorting individuals into crypto, yet more Nigerians are still eager to understand what bitcoin is all about
Are you saying that "Nigerians are still eager to understand what bitcoin is all about?" Grin Grin Grin In 2021 which was just last year following the ban, Nigeria was rated Africa’s largest P2P Bitcoin market with trades worth $99.1 million and yet you think that country is trying to understand Bitcoin?

It's highly refreshing to know that Nigeria is number two in countries that have searched more about Bitcoin in the world. It's the same way Nigeria ranks high too in forex trading. We've the enterprising and entrepreneurial spirit which has continued to further the "I can do" mentality. Despite not having the best of political leadership, Nigerians have continued to prove themselves worthy of emulation. I don't care the stereotype our inept and corrupt political class has thrown the rest of us into that has often made us laughing stock in the comity of nations (even here too) because of prejudice as if those who sneer at us are more sanctimonious than we are. Nigeria is a great country, only our politicians are the rubbish in it.

As long as I know, Bitcoin is banned in Nigeria.

I am not from Nigeria. But yes I am from one of the country where bitcoins are not legalized.
And it's not to be surprised that many users are googling about Bitcoins though Bitcoins are banned in the countries.
Bitcoins are famous for their decentralized nature, that is they cannot be controlled by any of the government.
This is the reason for which many people shows interest in the coin despite knowing that the coin is banned in their country.
And at last I am too not amazed to see the countries where Bitcoin has been googled the most.
It's the people's love for the coin for which despite their nation's law they are interested in this asset.

Data from Google trend is collected without strict criteria and it does not match what you are looking for in most cases. From searching to actually buying, investing is different. The percent of conversion from having interest in (shows by searching stats) to investing is low, very low.

If you see searching figure in a nation is highest, it does not meant that nation has a highest total Bitcoin investors or miners or Bitcoin nodes.
