Since the question in the OP is different from the question in the title, the answer to the OP is different from the answer to the title.

To the OP, I would say Bitcoin. There is no other coin that is better than Bitcoin in terms features and decentralization, which is what crypto should be all about. Therefore, Bitcoin should be the most promising coin and the best investment choice.

To the title, I would always recommend those coins which have already proven their worth in the market, those coins that have been there for a long time. New coins may seem promising but it only takes a strong bear market, a bad development team decision, or a single technical problem for them to succumb. Old coins like Ethereum (ETH) and Litecoin (LTC) are some of the best altcoins. They’re old and gold.

Ethereum and BNB. By having those two coins plus bitcoin, I think that is enough for you to make a profit in the future, especially if the market situation can change into a bull market. You do not have to invest in the other coins besides those two coins because I think those two coins are good to invest in. But in the crypto market, there is always a surprise to see one or more altcoins can increase because those coins have good progress so people see that project is promising. But be carefully selecting the coin because we never know which altcoin can survive.

For current market conditions, only ETH and BNB are the safest to buy, because they both have a trusted development team. So it is impossible
for the development team of the two altcoins to destroy their reputation that has been built in the long term. Therefore ETH and BNB will recover
if Bitcoin price starts to bullish, but in a bad market condition like now we still shouldn't forget to invest in Bitcoin too. Because Bitcoin is indeed
the safest coin to buy when the market crashes. So the capital we have can be used to buy 50% Bitcoin, and 50% can be bought altcoins.
But remember after buying BTC, ETH and BNB we have to hold the three coins until the market returns to a bullish trend. But if it turns out that
the price is falling, we must not panic and must remain patient holding the coins. Because after all, we really can't expect instant profits when
investing in crypto, it takes patience to wait for the market to be bullish and after that we can take profit.

But I understand where you are coming from, still the answer is very simple and always in front of you, even when you are searching frantically for it. While several other people might tell you that this and that altcoin will be the next big thing, the truth is nobody know for sure that an altcoin would be able to compete with that bitcoin has already done these 12 years. Hence it has been stress tested and time tested.

If that coin is altcoin, then I suggest you to DYOR because we will have different coins to invest in. But I recommend you to take a look at ETH and BNB since those coins are at the top position on the altcoin list. They are among the top 10 altcoins and probably the most recommended altcoin to invest in. I don't recommend new projects nor to look at the bottom and I don't consider the price really matter that we need to invest in those coins that are too cheap instead, we have to look for the potential. It was indeed the price of these coins are a little bit high but the risk is less compared to the others.

At this point, its way difficult to predict which coin would be jumping back to their previous ATH or even to the break even points! I mean one might say its good opportunity to buy at this point and earn big loads of profits since they are very low in value and would jump up easily, however this may fail in case of Altcoins.

I assume you want to buy them because they look very cheap and right to the point as compared to the bitcoin. However, its also important to check whether they have proper economical model or not. If you will invest into one altcoin only, it would be Ethereum.
If 3, ETH, BNB and DOT.

There are many altcoins to choose from TBH but I'd rather go for a slower but less riskier strategy than thinking of a short term and having a higher chance of losing your money. Pick the top altcoins if you are conservative but if you are aggressive and you can lose your money if things don't go your way then go for the lower market cap altcoins or maybe some meme coins if you want to.

This is where most of the cryptocurrency users fail, because with the failure of a single altcoin we shouldn't come to such a conclusion. The market is running on the trust, so these are part of the market. Even with the top cryptocurrencies like bitcoin we have experienced hacks that result in crash. Ethereum once experienced freeze of funds. So, technical elements fail and for the same we shouldn't be conclusive.

Believing in bitcoin, ethereum and BNB is good. Even with these investments we've got risks and we should understand. If someone have ignored bitcoin and ethereum in the past, the market would've never been this big now.

Seriously Market have been down, all  coins are down including bitcon, if you are investing in any coin, I will advise you to invest in bitcon and if you are investing, make sure its a long term investment.
