If you have the 500 W for free and dont have to pay for you can mine everything you want as all Coins you get with it is a plus for you !
But at the moment ETH Mining would be the best profit right now , til it will be changing to POS , but then you can also mine other Coins .
If you have already the Asic just turn it on , if you thinking to buy one just for Mining if you are new dont do it , GPUs would be better and you can sell them laters again.

I don't know if you already have something to start, like a PC with free PCIe slots, but considering the moment of ETH POS, I suggest you to look for Nvidia cards.
You can mine ETH right now and them you will have a better option to mine another coins, Nvidias are better than AMD on another algos.

500w you can run 3x RTX 3070 for example, or 1x RTX 3080 and 1 RTX 3070, there's a lot of great combinations
Right now I don't think it's a good idea to go with AMDs

If you want more info about BTC mining and Asics, it's better to ask in: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=14.0

I would get a used L3+ down clock it to 300 mh which should be 500 watts.

I would point it to viabtc and mine doge+ltc.

If you have 500w per hour for free you cant use all that 500watt for mining, unless you have more than 500watt, I am thinking you are referring to solar energy, some times the sun won't be that bright, you won't be getting that exact 500watt from your panels. Also what about your backup? How will you charge if you use all available power.

8x6600 mining rig = 500 wats, 230 MH/s ETH mining.
Even on free electricity, profit can fall very much. Read the article
https://bitproit.com/gpu-mining-profitability-after-ethereum-merge/
If you are now investing in mining, then it is better to buy an ASIC, because there are no such risks as mining on video cards.

Its why I think an L3+ may be best for him.

I strongly agree with this setup. You know that mining DOGE which is a low price coin is better in these times, mining LTC+DOGE is also great so I think this is the best you can do.No matter we have already entered negative territory for many GPU-s of 4 GB which cannot be profitable anymore unless you have free electricity and mining those coins can be a good option for the longer term especially on that DOGE thing as you can mine a small amount of them daily and during the long term it can add up to be a nice amount.
