Investing and gambling is a separate thing on which its not really bad to have some leisure time sometimes but of course you should really still need that control if you dont like for your finances to be affected.

The story happened long time so maybe he just accepted the fact that the items are completely lost. Imagine if they didn't went out of town, maybe it's not only the items who be will lost but lives as well. In your case you might be living in a village the way you describe your surroundings.

Perhaps your neighborhood can afford high-technology for security, but I think the burglar knew that OP was out of town for quite some time that's why the burglar decide to break into the house and stole his PS5 and other valuable items.
