Investing and gambling is a separate thing on which its not really bad to have some leisure time sometimes but of course you should really still need that control if you dont like for your finances to be affected.

The story happened long time so maybe he just accepted the fact that the items are completely lost. Imagine if they didn't went out of town, maybe it's not only the items who be will lost but lives as well. In your case you might be living in a village the way you describe your surroundings.

Sorry for the lost, that's kind of painful losing what you really worked for before you can afford it. Perhaps your neighborhood can afford high-technology for security, but I think the burglar knew that OP was out of town for quite some time that's why the burglar decide to break into the house and stole his PS5 and other valuable items. I believe that our house will remain safe if there will be dogs living on it and the house won't have days that it's unattended so that the burglar won't have time breaking in.
