I know you must be wondering what has a Car, over-speeding and slowing down got to do or doing in this section of a crypto currency forum.
What i actually meant to say was "Dont always be in a haste when making crypto transactions, always look for somewhere quiet and calm, that will allow you focus, so as not to end up making a costly mistake, if you are driving and the transaction cannot wait until you get to your destination, then look for somewhere safe to park and do you transaction, after the transaction, you can then continue your journey.

Below Is The Main Subject Of This Discussion.

$800 WORTH OF LITECOIN MISTAKENLY SENT TO A WRONG BITCOIN ADDRESS WHILE DRIVING.

A few hours ago, a friend(one of my crypto buddies) reached out to me on the phone calling for help, read conversation below.

[my phone ringing and i answered the call]
FREIND: hey five, xup?

ME: hey bro, whats up man?

FREIND: something happened, and i think i really need your help.

ME: what happened?

FREIND: i bought 15 litecoin from Remitano exchange this morning, but something really urgent came up and i had to travel to PH, so while i was driving, i decided to transfer the 15 litecoin to my Binance account, i thought i recognized my Binance litecoin address among the several addresses i pinned on my clipboard on my swiftkey keyboard, so i didnt bother to log into my Binance account to copy the address afresh in order for me to save time and also to concentrate more on the road.

ME: oookeey, am listening.

FREIND: so I withdraw my 15 litecoin from Remitano to an address I thought was my Binance litecoin address, the transaction status on Remitano showed they've sent it but for over 30 minutes after i managed to login, I didn't get the coin on my Binance account, I became worried and had to park to find out what's going on, then I discovered I actually withdraw the coins to a Bitcoin address, and....

[i cut in]
ME: Jesus!i exclaimed, and what?

FREIND: and the worst of it all is that the Bitcoin address i sent the coins to does not belong to me, the address....

[i cut in again]
ME: you are joking right?

FREIND: i am not joking, i am freaking out here, i cant even drive anymore..

ME: who then is the owner of the Bitcoin address you sent your litecoins to ?

FREIND: i honestly dont know, i i...

[i cut in]
ME: what!?i exclaimed, how then did the address got pinned on your copy and paste clipboard?

FREIND: i don't know, honestly, i guess it belongs to a person or an exchange i sent bitcoin to in the past, i don't know which exactly, am so confused right now, i dont know what to do.

ME:[confused], why did you pin an address you dont know who it belongs to on your copy and paste clipboard in the first place ?

FREIND: bro, i always delete them, it just happened i forgot to delete this one.

ME: honestly, i dont know what to say, am as confused as you right now, how do you possibly think i could be of help to you in this kind of issue? i honestly think your money is gone...

Conversation continued, but the important part is the above.

This is a true life story, i didnt make any part of that conversation up , I really hope we all learn, most especially newbies, crypto currency transactions are not the kind of transaction one does in a hurry or while driving or while busy with other things, crypto transactions require full focus and 100 percent attention to details , to avoid  being a victim to this kind of occurrence, this is probably the first of this kind of story as ive never heard this kind before.

I don't know  if that's really the outcome if someone transacting while driving, anyways maybe greed and carelessness made this story. But this kind of mistake did not happen if the guy who transacted while driving is careful as you said OP that he simply copy and paste the address without knowing that he already made a mistake, must better if he check his binance account to prevent such mistake and the lesson learn here is that  don't be greed and be careful always. It's better slowly while secure than fast but mistake.

I will admit the fact that when been engaged doing something and have a transaction to make, one should be very careful not to make a mistake by going through the second time to confirm if all errors were totally avoided, it's truly costly when a mistake happens and its irreversible, then why in rush to make a costly mistake, also we should not develop an overconfidence mind, this is the faulty act most user do without confirming what they were about to initiate, as not all actions are reversible.

At least your friend is safe and didn't hitting a tree or power pole even he must be panic since he didn't received his coins yet.

$800 is big for me, if I were your friend, I will send around $5 first to see if I send to correct address. I'd rather to choose loss $1 rather than loss the whole $800 because of my greediness, this same like many people tend to lend their money on centralized site than holding on his own wallet.

People are so careless that it is sometimes hard to believe when they tell what is happening to them - and this case definitely shows how someone can easily lose their money. I had one case where I sent payments for a certain service for months, and eventually the guy realized he gave me a BTC address that wasn’t his at all, and he also had no idea how he got to that address at all Roll Eyes

I personally would survive $800 that went into the unknown, but for someone it can be really big money so always check each coin address at least a few times before you press the send button.

So many errors were made during this transaction that it would have been a miracle if he had pulled it off successfully.

• Firstly, the risk of driving and using your phone exposes the user to lots of potential harm and already creates a huge distraction that could affect how well your friend could complete the transaction.

• Then the idea of storing addresses into your keyboard is high risk as one could suffer keyboard hijacking.
And it doesn't make sense to save multiple addresses when you can easily get them from the wallet you intend sending to,

• Lastly, relying on memory to chose an address to send to is totally wrong and the risk of error is high.

That's a quite costly lesson on not getting to complacent when handling finances, especially one you have full control and responsibility on.

Dont always be in a haste when making crypto transactions
The importance of this cannot be overstated for both newbies and oldies in the game, for some this kind of mistake may cost them their life savings which is terrible and should be avoided at all cost. Unlike the traditional banks where you can recall a wrong transaction or get the name/contact details of the user you mistakenly sent fiat to, crypto doesn't provide such options. Apart from avoiding making hasty crypto transactions, you also need to try to be in a proper frame of mind when making transactions as well, avoid divided attention and be sure to always double check before confirming transaction.

In addition to avoid mistakes, if you do transactions with someone you know often (p2p), always tell them to resend their address and not assume that it is the one you think it is or the one you saved, that assumption can be costly.

I think I would be more afraid of him endangering his own life and possibly the lives of other road users he would have encountered if something had gone wrong, it’s not even about Crypto-currency you shouldn’t be doing any other thing apart from driving while on the road, and to making a transaction I to believe in pinning wallet address, yes it works for many but it won’t take me anything to go and get the address from the original source.

I know you must be wondering what has a Car, over-speeding and slowing down got to do or doing in this section of a crypto currency forum.

[i cut in]

Driving in the road while doing a very important transaction is always not advisable as it could mean you're gonna fail in one of them. And yeah, it's happening now. It's like losing all his money in an instant, and sending a fortune to a total stranger. Carelessness is something that could really ruin us, as it always hit us in the end and make us regret later on. Honestly, there's no way that he can get his money back, that's so lucky for him if the owner of that address will send back the money, but its never happening in most cases. Hopefully, this story will always remind us that being careful always pays off. And that there's no need to rush if that transaction is as important as your life.

Apart for the mentioned risk involved in using your mobile phone while driving, I don't know in yours, but in my country the fine amounts to 200 euros, to be added to the lost litecoins. And it also entails the loss of 6 out of 12 points in ones driving license. The good part is that if someone gets caught twice and loses his/her license (6 points + 6 points), he/she won't be able to mistakenly send coins to wrong addresses while driving anymore Cheesy

Always check at least twice that the address you are sending your coins is the correct one. Not only the alphanumerical part, but the chain too!!

Your friend must have park in the safe place first before he did his transaction so he won't be making mistakes while doing his money transaction. But maybe he didn't realized that until he experienced it by himself. He could just have reviewed the address first before sending because that is the right thing to do to avoid sending in a wrong address. But maybe the damage is done, his money is lost, so he must have learned his big lesson for the first time, and learn to avoid doing it again.

Cryptocurrency transaction is the one that needs 100% precision. I have taught many newcomers about it. Let's imagine that you want to do normal bank transaction, you must ensure that the account name tallies with the account number and making sure it's the right bank.

If we can be very careful for a transaction that is being controlled by a third-party, why can't we be for a transaction in a trustless network. The mistake was totally avoidable, it's unfortunate he couldn't avoid it.

Meanwhile, why is litecoin able to be accepted in a bitcoin transaction?

What I see is a complete distraction between driving and sending crypto to someone plus isn't it prohibited to drive while using your phone? That's the fault I see in this whole story and if someone wants to send something from someone using phone then don't drive, just stop the car and then do the whole thing of sending before it takes some focus on what you will do next. Driving requires some focus on the road plus sending crypto to someone required some focus on what address you will be sending to make sure it's the right address.

Why do multitasking in a dangerous way when you can make it in a safest way?

The moral lesson about this story is that you shouldn't do multitasking when one of the task that you have to do needs 100% focus, recheck while the other task is driving. I always triple check the address I pasted even though you can see that the wallet address is 100% correct and no clipboard malware whatsoever. Even not storing copied wallet address to your clipboard is also prone to clipboard hijacking. Just tell your friend that it's okay if he lose $800 rather than losing his life because he is driving. Driving while using mobile phones is risky and could harm the person who is driving also the passenger and whoever is near him.

I can understand speaking on the phone if you're stuck in traffic as you don't need fast reflexes while not moving, when you have an automatic you don't need the right hand,  but seriously driving and looking at the screen of your smartphone and copy-pasting addresses and sending coins? 800$ might be much for some people, but getting a ticket for that here would be at least one-third of that sum, if you get involved in an accident the insurance won't cover it, you might spend 10 times on preparing the other guy's car, let's not even mention if you hit a pedestrian or you crash into another car and you kill somebody.

It takes 5 mins to pull to the side of the road into free space or a parking lot and do that safely and without a rush, then you can go and finish your trip, what are 5 minutes going to change?

Anyhow, even if he doesn't remember the address to which he sent the money he can check the blockchain and see when that address got any funds from his own addresses, once he has the date he can go through emails, WhatsApp, telegram, browser logs and find out what he had done that day and who's the owner.
I don't think there is any country in this world that doesn't punish the usage and misappropriation of funds since they were sent by mistake, taking 10x more out of an ATM, sending money that by mistake was deposited in your bank account by a stranger, every single one of those is a crime, here this thing is punishable by up to 5 years, so if your friend knows who owns that address he can talk to them and if they aren't cooperative he can file a report with the police. I don't see how somebody that can be tracked easily based on past interactions would risk that for so little.

I don't know if we, humans, could ever completely do away with carelessness. I guess it's in our DNA already. It's always a human tendency to get careless, complacent, too sure, too confident at times. We're always reminded to double-check, verify, and so on. As a matter of fact, these reminders often come with incidents where failure to do so had a huge cost. But we still fail every now and then.

This made me reminded of a funny incident here which involved no less than theymos himself where a user erroneously sent $1,000 to the copper membership payment address. When theymos made the refund, he also committed the same error of sending it to a wrong person. LOL! All these incidents are like the story in the OP where the funds are sent to an address of a previous transaction.

Using a phone while driving? I find that to be careless. It's terrible to make a mistake like that and lose money, but I believe this will serve as a lesson for him to never make such a mistake again. If there had been an accident or if you had struck someone with the car, it might have been worse (God forbid). Next time, please drive more cautiously and put your phone away.
