Hi, i'm new in the forum and i'm french, so not very good in english, sorry...

I'm downloading a node with bitcoin core but, since 4 days, i can't continue to download ( it's at 75%).

Computer closed bitcoin core and when i try to open it, there is this message :
"Error opening block data base" or in french ( erreur d ouverture de la base de données de blocs ).

They ask me if i want to built again the data base now but if i put "ok", it stop.

I m not very potent with computer but i'd like to have a node to participate in the decentralization.
Iwill learn with time...

Is anyone know how to restart it?

I m with windows 11 and i download on 1T hard disk.

I tryed to stop firewall to restart and i have read something with "-reindex" but i can't find how to do.

Thanks for your attention

Christophe

I tryed to stop firewall to restart and i have read something with "-reindex" but i can't find how to do.

The best way to do it is to launch command line “cmd” and then add “-reindex” option to the command.
How do you launch the application? You may also edit the properties of the “icon/shortcut” you have, and add that parameter to the command.
Tell us if it solves the problem or if problem persists.

I m with windows 11 and i download on 1T hard disk.

Are you sure you have enough space on your hard drive?  Currently the blockchain needs about 471GB, and it's only getting bigger.  Just to clarify, you are using a HDD, not a SSD?  You may have some corrupted sectors on your HDD which are incapable of storing data, the hard drive will attempt to write around them until it runs out of space.

The best way to do it is to launch command line “cmd” and then add “-reindex” option to the command.

That won't work on Windows.  There is a way to do it from the command line, but since the OP is using Bitcoin QT it's easier to just use the built-in console.  Open Bitcoin GUI, click on "Window" in the top menu, then click on "Console" (or press CTRL+T,) then type reindex and hit enter.

He wont be able to open the console if Bitcoin Core itself can't be opened; plus -reindex is a command-line option not an RPC command.

@cabat your options are PawGo's suggestion or by creating a shortcut.

-To expand the cmd method, you must cd (change directory) to bitcoin-qt's directory before entering commands.
For example (default installation directory), open command prompt, then type:
Code:
cd C:\Program Files\Bitcoin
cmd's dir will change from "C:\Users\(username)>" into "C:\Program Files\Bitcoin>", then launch Bitcoin Core GUI with --reindex parameter:
Code:
bitcoin-qt --reindex
After that, Bitcoin Core will look like it's downloading blocks again but it's not (unless your blockchain is pruned).
It will still take a lot of time to finish though.

-For the shortcut method:
Go to Bitcoin's installation directory where "bitcoin-qt.exe" is located (the default is "C:\Program Files\Bitcoin")
Right-click on bitcoin-qt.exe and select "Create shortcut", a "bitcoin-qt.exe - Shortcut" file will be created.
Right-click on the shortcut and select "Properties", in the 'Shortcut' tab edit the target and add --reindex at the end of the existing text.
It should be like this if it's in the default installation directory:
Code:
"C:\Program Files\Bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe"
Click save and use that shortcut to open Bitcoin Core with reindex parameter. (use it only once since it will trigger reindex again if reused)

I m with windows 11 and i download on 1T hard disk.
Is that the total size of the hard disk, or the actual free space available? Huh

As mentioned, the blockchain is currently nearing 500gigabytes... so unless you have at least 500 GB of free space... there is a chance your node is simply running out of storage space and is unable to download any more blocks.

Hi everybody
I m greatfull for all of this and sorry for m'y silence.

To answer to the hard disk question, it s a ssd 1 terra  with only documents downloaded, so i have more than 900 go free.

I tryed  to change on cmd line.
For that, i opened bitcoincore-qt with text editors ( note pad ++ and sublime text ) but it was not phrases ( lots of " nul " or lots of numbers and pictural.).

I reapeat i m not vers strong with this, i m learning ( like english).

I want to download blocks to participate at blockchain adventure.
I think decentralisation is good .

In the future, if i can learn enough, perhaps i will serve to other things, but tokay it s only to verify transactions and decentralise.

I ll read again your messages and i ll try the others solutions...

Thanks

Se you son.

You are not supposed to edit the .exe file directly. I suggest you follow  through the shortcut method by nc50lc

Images reference as follows

Create the shortcut from where's the bitcoin-qt.exe located

https://www.ceofix.net/2785/how-to-create-run-shortcut-on-desktop-in-windows-10/

On the desktop, edit Properties of the bitcoin-qt shortcut

https://www.ceofix.net/2785/how-to-create-run-shortcut-on-desktop-in-windows-10/

Quote
in the 'Shortcut' tab edit the target and add --reindex at the end of the existing text.

https://monkeysatkeyboards.com/blog/working-bitcoin-testnet-windows-7

After you have done it, make sure before the next time you open up bitcoin-qt, redo the guidelines but this time, delete the --reindex option.

BTW, there is a French sub-board(Français), in case you want to chime in there.

Okay, I suppose picture guides should beat the language barrier.

Since vv181 already provided images for the 'shortcut method', I'll provide the images for the "cmd method" instead.
It's actually shorter and easier:
  • Open "Command Prompt", one of the easiest way it to use search (click search and type "cmd"):
  • A command prompt window will open, there, type "cd C:\Program Files\Bitcoin" (change the directory if bitcoin-qt is in another folder):
  • In the next line, type: "bitcoin-qt --reindex":

Wait for a few seconds and Bitcoin Core will open and it will start to reindex.

You might want to consider disabling 'prune block storage' setting since you have the space.
It will take about half of your free disk space but you can freely swap wallets and use rescan from the genesis block.
That depends on your use case.
