I have been in Bitcointalk forum for a year and a half(+/-) now. And one thing I find very disappointing that you won't get any notifications on who replied you on your posts/replies.
Like other social media, for example, they show you the notification for who and where the reply is made.

As shown on the screenshot, there's an option called "Show new replies to your posts."
But this only shows the topics in which the reply was made, and not where and who made that reply.
Also, if you are having a conversation with someone like discussing something, and that's a hot topic in which people are blasting their comments. You might not find the reply and conversation you were having. It is possible, but you may have to search a lot to find that.
Also, there's an option in which you can turn on notification, but that sends all the other replies made on the topic which are not related to your conversations.
So it's good to have a separate field where we can receive those notifications, which are specified to only replies, and we can access it through that notification link.
If this already exist in forum then I would like someone to point me out please.
Also share your thought which needs improvements in forum and what should be necessary to add.
And if not, then I think it should be a really good option to have on forum.

You are right, it is a hassle that the forum does not have an effective notification system.
There however are bots created by forum users that helps with this. I know of such bots from TryNinja[1] and LoyceV[2], there could possibly be more.

[1]
[TELEGRAM] Yet Another BitcoinTalk Notification BOT...

[2] LoyceV's notification bot

Hopefully, when the new forum software is launched there would be a way to get notifications without using bots or extensions.

You can use telegram bot created by TryNinja [TELEGRAM] Yet Another BitcoinTalk Notification BOT (merits, mentions, topics,+) the bot can also notified you when someone mention your username in any topics.

This feature is good to be implemented and many users already create a bunch thread about this suggestion, but I think it can be easily abused by brand new or newbie users that will mention a user without any reason. Then user will get many notify and it just become spam, so they wouldn't use that's feature since the forum show most of the posts that he didn't want to see/expect.

You have all it takes to get all notifications that you want.

If you want merit and quote notifications, you can use the Telegram notification not.

I will not advice you to use the Telegram bot for replies notifications because the bot will notify you of each person posts, even if you are not checking the replies. This can be annoying at times.

For notification of replies under topic, scroll to the right side of the thread, at the upper or lower part, you will see notify which is beside reply that you click on if you want to reply to a topic, enable the notification there. If you have the email as active email notification on your device, you will be notified. The reason I like it is because once you do not click on it to check the reply again, you will not be notified again until you continue to check the reply.

About notifications for replies, you can get it from the forum, in Profile settings.

Some options. Let's tick the highlighted option.
Quote
  • Automatically watch topics after replying to them. (You can add all of your posted-in topics to your watchlist.)
  • Receive forum announcements and important notifications by email.
  • Receive reply notification only for the first unread reply.
  • Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic.
  • When sending notification of a reply to a topic, send the post in the email (but please don't reply to these emails.)

For unofficial solutions, you can try notification bots.

I mentioned it on the post already, and it's not useful for many reasons. It will spam your notification with every unrelated replies.

My bot runs natively on Telegram (it uses their official bot API) and doesn't ask for any password or access code whatsoever. How would I hack you? Tongue

Unless you don't trust Telegram, which is fine.

Then you will wait for ages for that to happen, there are already lot of request and suggested features made but only few get a solution and notifications are not in the priority line. Even the new bitcointalk software[1] isnt done yet too in which i think most notification feature have like othee new forum software do.

If you want to receive notifications from Bitcointalk then you can use telegram to receive notifications when someone mentioned you or you tracking the thread. I am using the telegram notification bot created by TryNinja and it is very helpful, easy to use, work as it should be. Visit the thread provided hy un_rank to setup the notif bot. Good luck setting up the bot.

It seems that the forum members have lived with this notification style for so long to the extent that everyone has been adapted to it. This is because no one is winning to recommend or push for a change, rather everyone is suggesting a third party bot to do the notifications.
What are the possible reasons of not having the kind of notification recommended by OP. Will it lag the software or the software will not be compatible or is theymos avoid anything that will lead to hack of the forum?

Personally, I do have much problems with the notification since I always use the last replied option and click on "new", it will take me to my own last reply and from there I trace down.

The forum bots are the best ways to get notifications from the forum on quote replies.

The only other option is to use the timed search and search for your username (with a reasonable time limit - such as a day) and see if anyone's replied to you by quoting your message in that time. If people don't reply by quoting then there's also no way of knowing they've replied to you without checking the thread yourself (unless they mention you by name).

I'll wait for when it's officially added on forum.
Apart from the fact there's only one Admin doing forum upgrades, there's also a risk factor in each change. So anything that can be created by a user script, is safer for the forum. So I wouldn't hold my breath.
It may be in the new forum software, but that's been a promise from long before I joined Bitcointalk. Again: I wouldn't hold my breath Smiley

Yes. You are right, I have been saying this since March but no avail. Instead they referred me to a bot which till date I have not gotten any notification. I wanted to create this thread since when I was a newbie but I was told that they (Legendary members) would  use me to get more merit by themselves so I was advised to leave the creation of the thread and referred to the bitcointalk bot for notifications

You have a way to know who replied you on your posts/replies.
Use the search option.
Go with Forum search
Enter your username
You can specify it by specific user
Pick a rang of age for the messages/replies you want to search
Order it however you like
The search result will bring you all mentioned posts by other or even by yourself.

The forum really don't have a smart notification system like you mention someone using @username and receive an email or have a notification log to alert you. This is a software which is over 10 years old 😉

I don't trust 3rd party options.
Understandable.
In that case, you can use my simple bot which is built on python: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5146905

The code is very easy to read(even if you don't know python). It does its intended work except for one drawback: It may repeat the notification a couple of times. This can be easily fixed if you know python.
I may update it later this week.

It requires very little resource to run(if your machine can run python and is connected to the internet then it will work). If you have any useless raspberry pi lying around, or you can run it in the background 24x7 on your android phone with termux.
