Well, Europe sans Russia is not an entirely resource-rich area. There may be some countries that have oil deposits somewhere but it dwarfs when compared to Russia. There are huge coal mines in Germany but those are no longer efficient, or no longer viable as a source of energy given how detrimental its effects are in the environment.

Right now, the most trade will be done in currencies (money). What do they do is get the money and just buy it themselves. Now, once the supply was cut off there will be a big problem. EU thought they can find alternative to get gas but they later realized there is no other way, German will be faced with the heat when winter start soon, the reserve will last less than a month from now. It's because that gas runs almost everything in all sector. Businesses in the food industry won't run if they don't have gas, the same goes for the transport of goods and people then that's why there's an overall talk with the gas prices.
Whether we admit it or not, it's like the soul of every industry where it's the main reason why the prices also goes up. If it isn't for the petrol price hike then we won't be seeing the significant effect of it to the other products and services run by petrol/oil.

Ukraine is known as the bread basket of the whole Europe which means that sooner or later you must understand that the whole Europe does get it's grains delivered from there ( mostly) at a much cheaper and affordable price as well.
