It boggles my mind how short sighted you gpu miners are ... you guys actually shoot in your own foot and pretend it is ok supporting eg. ETHW

Gpu miners will support the most profitable chain. There is a chip shortage in the world, and a demand for cheap gpu's. After Ethereum goes POS, most miners will sell their gpu's and some of them will end up in  drones, guiding systems for missiles, robots, weapons, AI networks.

Regarding ASICs and centralization.

I think many didn’t worry about ASIC centralization on ETH because compared to a regular GPU it’s efficiency wasn’t that all that great. Especially when comparing a GPU mining sha256 compared to an ASIC. Hence why they never upgraded the algo because they saw no threat.

Also all of bitcoins hashrate is ASICs and it’s also centralized by large farms. Remember before Segwit how difficult it was to make them signal to make the Segwit switch? So this is why ASICs on ETH wasn’t considered a huge security concern.

Yes, you actually want an algorithm where a lot of devices achieve similar efficiency and ethash was a step in that direction.

It just so happens that progpow is the next evolution of this thought to achieve even better (asic) neutrality.

While with sha asics could achieve efficiency factor of 100000x

scrypt lowered it to 1000x

ethash lowered it further to 10x

and progpow lowers it to 1.1x

Why are gpu miners trying to keep ethash alive? This is a loosing battle since asic devices are already up to 5x times more efficient.
At the moment it is still a transition phase for ethash asics but gpus are on the loosing end.
Once asics saturate any given ethash algo its over for gpus to compete.

It makes absolutely no sense as a gpu miner to support ethash anymore.

We need to switch to the next best asic resistant or better yet asic neutral algo.

Progpow algo is the closest to asic neutrality people came up with so, yes, it makes truly the most sense for gpu miners to support this algorithm.

It boggles my mind how short sighted you gpu miners are ... you guys actually shoot in your own foot and pretend it is ok supporting eg. ETHW

I do not think that ASICs on this algorithm are more efficient. On this algorithm, only Ethereum mining will give a good profit, and then ASICs will also have problems with payback and profit. Therefore, GPU miners are lucky that the manufacturers did not produce a lot of these ASICs.

Request from Coinbase to clarify EthereumPoW fork code availability and activation
https://github.com/ethereumpow/go-ethereum/pull/17
Thanks for your request. The chainid for ethw is 10001, which we will publish on our Twitter account. The code you mentioned in the above comments has to keep because chainID 1 is needed to validate chain data for blocks before the merge, and all chain data after the merge will be chainID 10001. To block any replay attack after the merge happening we have done the following work:

chain ID change to 10001
encore EIP-155, which means all transactions after the merge has to include the new chainID 10001.
The above two steps make ETHW the most safest chain, which means 1) ethpos will not replay to/from ETHW 2) all other forked chains can not replay to/from ETHW.

The final code will be released on the Merge day with the fork height.

I do not think that ASICs on this algorithm are more efficient.

Well, they are. And you can buy them. It simply isn't a matter of opinion - ASICs mine ethash with far greater efficiency than GPU can. That is a fact.

It makes zero sense that miners would support an algorithm that will run them out of business.
The only logical explanation is shortsightedness from noob miners that didn't build their rigs with enough overhead for more power intensive applications.

Did you know that Ethereum has another fork called ethereumfair? This coin is not as well known as EthereumPoW, but it has the same algorithm

While it is traded on two exchanges, mining is also not very profitable.

So far only Metamask seems to work as a wallet for ETF but I hope the guys at Exodus should do a swift implementation of adding these forks, these are going to be the main ones to being mined if the projects seems successful and bring value to the market. Most likely they will as they are continuing where ETH left in PoW and so I only except great success from such forks but for this we need sometime to see how they will perform.

It seems listed on many exchanges, however anyone know if deposits/withdraws are open yet on the new blockchain. Many exchanges already creddited people their ETHW if they had ETH balance.

Surprisngly the price is not dumping yet. So either deposits aren't enabled or there is some large whale buying up all the ETHW.

The hash rate is low 11.65 TH/s for the moment and it is a great moment and opportunity to mine,we are in the beginning of this, most probably a lot of people will be already reading during this weekend what to do with their rigs and they will point them here,ETC network difficulty will fall back again so hopefully mining will become profitable again.I would not care much about deposits and withdraws in exchanges,so far ETHW has no support or official wallet except the Metamask which allows you to create such wallet with the private key.I would start mining it,in fact I am turning my rigs back on and even mine at a loss because most likely this coin is going to be the next best thing after ETH to mine in a profitable way.

If we talk about profit, then I got more on ethereum classic, although this profit does not pay off my expenses for electricity and the Internet. Ethereum classic is more attractive because it is traded on many exchanges and private exchangers.

So you basically saying it's better to mine Ethereum Classic and keep for the future? I don't think ETC will do well in future because it has nothing more than just PoW to offer, is there any projects building on ETC? I guess not, I believe that PoW coins like Ergo and Flux will beat ETC when it comes to return of investment.

I agree so far it is the only coin with a real possibility to increase in value over time, they the developers of ETC has promised to always stay in PoW which is something unique compared to the ETH however for this to happen people should be really patient.

Personally I am using unmineable miner to mine some coins which are otherwise unmineable with GPU-s and running the ETCHASH algorithm.

However I would advise anyone to convert this really low amount of mined coins nowadays to Bitcoin and this way they will keep their investment safe for years to come because Bitcoin is the only coin which will surely get a new all time high.
