I have heard claims of people who say they are mining cryptocurrency on their cellphone, I'm sure some of us must have heard of "pi" and how people say they were mining it. How real is that and does that really count as mining? Second question is, if it can be called mining, is it the creators of the "pi" that made it mineable with even a cellphone? Are creators of a cryptocurrency (the ones that are mineable) the ones that set how you can mine them?

Cell phones have a CPU so technically they can mine if someone writes the software. It has been done
but it's generally a bad idea because phones aren't designed for that kind of abuse. The only legitimate
phone miners also work on other ARM based platforms. Anything "phone only" is a scam.

Edit: regarding the last question crypto creators only define the algorithm. It can be implemented in any technology
imagineable, even with pencil & paper. There is no way to prevent any technology from implementing the algoriithm,
only technical limitations that make it unfeasible.

In reality theoretically it is possible to mine with the mobile phone and i'm not talking about pi network but true mining you can use algorithms for cpu such as randomx / cryptoNight / argon2 / astrobwt via xmrig with just a line of code written via termux for example obviously you don't earn nothing the cpu of mobile phones do not have enough power is just to try and you risk melting the battery in a short time for those interested in any case https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5338550.msg59879636#msg59879636

The mobile phone does not have a cooling system, so it cannot mine for a long time. My Samsung phone lay in the sun today, and when I took it, it was written there that the system turned off xx applications so that there was no overheating Smiley
Maybe this is a node for a cryptocoin on a mobile phone, but this is not mining.

If they don't know any better, they may mean downloading apps that work like faucets and ask them to solve captchas, fill in questionnaires or watch ads for trace amounts of crypto. I've seen a few of them advertise that as mining on ads

I heard about that Pi coin for years already. They have a cult community like the old scam coin TBC or The Billion Coin. I keep telling them that it is a nonsense coin, it will never become valuable and no reliable exchange will list it. If mining is that easy then the supply will be too much compared to its demand. Not that mobile phones cannot mine but they aren't built to mine in the first place. I still find it surprising that there are still remaining Pi believers around.

There was a popular coin a while back which you could mine on your phone, electroniem or something like it. However it wasn’t really mining. Just pretended to mine and you got paid for it.

Most cell phone mining apps are scams to steal your private keys. If you find one in the google play store and it doesn’t have many reviews it’s most likely some malware.

You sound very certain that nothing good can come out for those who mined Pi. Is this not the same dubiety that people expressed when bitcoin was launched, thinking that it will have no value and then today suddenly you know the story.

I still find it surprising that there are still remaining Pi believers around.
These believers are those who missed out on bitcoin then maybe due to dubiety, right now, they may tell you that they rather have Pi and later meet the reality that it has no value, than not have Pi at all and later meet the reality that it has value.

I know that there is a possibility of you mining from a phone. I remember MinerGatenot affiliated with this whatsoever. It's when I started to get into cryptocurrency, and I just searched how you can mine, etc., and that appeared. They have an application for desktop and mobile IIRC. I wouldn't recommend that to anyone, but that's just one of the things I remember when mining.

With Pi, I think it's just a joke to get all the data from unsuspecting users that would sell their identity to the highest bidder. Upsell something or something with that knowledge. It's just impossible to conclude this type of thing.

yes mate you can mine crypto using your phone, specialy android phones with snapdragon cpus, you can mine veruscoin for example.

There are several fake videos online but veruscoin is a solid project and can be mined using smartphones with the app verus miner 9000 and verusbox.

Yes it makes sense if someone works on an algorithm that's a perfect fit for smartphone CPUs and GPUs but there is none right now, the truth is any coins that claimed to be mineable on smartphones are either scam or they lie, there is a difference in cloud mining and real mining, the likes of Pi Network is not real mining its cloud.

PI network doesn't really make any "mining" operations but they are just creating number in a database. You can use on your phone their app but generation of coins is not related to any PoW. Pluse, they don't have blockchain... no transactions to be processed, no nodes etc etc
I know it's something trending again nowadays but this project it's far away to be considered in my opinion and after several years we are discussing the same troubles and issues with them...

You've been lied to, I haven't seen any smartphone miners that really mines with phones hardware, I can remember when ETN was still a new project, that time you can make 20$ in few days but as time goes on the team make a stop to it... This was the last most legit coin you can mine on phones, others are scam projects.

Oh its Pi again  Grin the project is a scam and it's a shame that many believe in this crap project, I've tried to tell many the difference but no one listened, maybe you will, Pi Network solves nothing, the reason they force KYC on users is still unknown, the app is full of ads and I believe that makes them money.

you can check it yourself, simply if the resources on your cellphone are drained or your cpu is used 100% running the program, and there is a hashrate, it means it could not be a scam. I remember the Electroneum project, which is still running.

I like that perspective, if it doesn't burn up your phone it's not real mining.

I once mined a Litecoin block on my iPhone.  True story...  I don't think these days that sort of thing is feasible though.  I'd have to wonder what coin would choose to setup their network on the back of cellular phone mining, but it sounds like a bad one.  This sounds like the sort of thing that they're catering to an idea that doesn't make sense.  I would avoid, but definitely avoid investing anything into something like that.

Cell phone mining, real POW mining that is, is just CPU mining so any bigger CPU can do it better. That's why anything claiming to be phone only is a scam.
