I'm guessing that there's an unexciting explanation for this, but I noticed an old post [1] that was authored by "Anonymous", but edited by Satoshi:

Does anyone know what's up with that post?

Maybe it's one of Satoshi's (although it's in a distinctly different style), but he didn't want his name attached to it?

Maybe it's not his (more likely), but he edited it as a moderator? But then, why the edit? I'm not sure how moderation worked back then, but this post seems unlikely to have contained a spam link or anything objectionable.

Any insights appreciated! Smiley

Satoshi was the creator/admin of the forum. Back in the day, people can post in the forum as "anonymous". No sign up was required if I'm correct. Satoshi added the post as administrator. I don't think there's anything special. Moderator may check what has been edited as they most likely has the right to check the original version of the post.

I also had the vague idea that "guest" posting was a thing back then (I actually mentioned it and then edited it out of the OP, to keep it more focused). But I'm not sure if that was an old forum (SourceForge) thing or not, which would predate this post, I think?

Either way, I don't think it matters much, because I can find examples of posts that were both made and edited by "Anonymous" or made by "Anonymous" and then edited by "davidonpda" (like this one). But this is the only example I could find (so far) of one edited by "satoshi", although I admit I haven't looked thoroughly/carefully.

The post is from July 2010 while bitcointalk has been created back in November 2009 (first account is created on November 17, 2009. So, it was not obviously from sourceforge if you mean so (seems like I didn’t understand your post clearly).
Here's a little brief of the history of bitcointalk forum- A study about history of bitcointalk

Either way, I don't think it matters much, because I can find examples of posts that were both made and edited by "Anonymous" or made by "Anonymous" and then edited by "davidonpda"
I can't see any username with davidonpda on bitcointalk. Maybe they have changed their username.

I can't see any username with davidonpda on bitcointalk. Maybe they have changed their username.
Changing the username will still link the previous posts to the new name since the "User ID" (u=0000000) wont change.

Probably a deleted account and the user's posts were turned into guest posts.
This is probably the explanation on the Anonymous "edited by davidonpda" post: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=67541.msg789906#msg789906
The user in the quote's link requested to change his posts to appear to be posted by an 'Anonymous' guest. (the OP of that thread didn't, just 'delete account')

I'm guessing that there's an unexciting explanation for this, but I noticed an old post [1] that was authored by "Anonymous", but edited by Satoshi:
Satoshi edited the post, but he did not author the post.

I think it was something pretty mundane. Possibly an external link, removing a name, some small line that was near the end.

Does anyone know what's up with that post?
The user deleted his account, but after Satoshi had edited the post.

Maybe it's one of Satoshi's (although it's in a distinctly different style), but he didn't want his name attached to it?

It wasn't that it included spam. There was something in it, it was a funny phrase, link, or something identifying, just a line or two, and Satoshi removed it. Satoshi was light on moderation, but there was also less of a need.

There are cases where users can request like at current you have to request @theymos to change the username or post to be appeared by anonymous like in recent case @Royse777 requested to change one of thread to appear by Anonymous user.

So this can also be case even if he has not deleted the account but at that time @Satoshi was looking for all the matters and maybe he has edited the post for some correction can't say exactly.

Yep, that's the crux of the issue, I think. If moderators can edit posts, then there is probably no (worthwhile) mystery to solve here.

I regret my wording in the OP because it reads like I'm taking the existence of moderator editing for granted.

If someone can confirm that posts being edited by anyone but the author is normal around here (or was normal back in the day) then I'll lock this topic. Smiley

It's not Satoshi.
What a bummer!

Not really, though.  I admit the title of this thread had me more than a little interested, but over the past year or so I've come to the conclusion that Satoshi disappearing was probably the best thing he could have ever done for bitcoin--assuming he did it willingly, and also assuming that Satoshi is a single individual.

Why?  Because there are so many altcoins who's founders are still around, and quite a few of them are hellbent on making their coin worse, not better, and they have the power to do so through all of these voting mechanisms.  Anyway.  Another possible Satoshi resurrection quashed.

Did you mean Luna, by any chance? Well, I am kidding. Yeah, I agree with you. As long as founders and developers have control over their coin, they can make it better and worse. In most cases, It will be worse because everyone wants to do business in this market. Bitcoin is different in this case. No one can control it. At least, not a person. Am I going off-topic?

These are some of the moderator notes I found in some of the posts:

Quote
[moderator's note: removed flood, reduced size of some text]

Quote
[moderator's note: removed non-English content]

Quote
[moderator's note: replaced NSFW embedded image in quote with URL (the Imgur link)]

And these are some of the older examples:

~
Moderator's note: This post was edited by frodocooper to remove a nested quote.

~
Moderator's note: This post was edited by frodocooper to add code tags.

So, yes. I think that moderators (at least some of them) have always had the ability to edit posts. I do not know if there was always a practice to leave a comment on such cases.
