I don't think low value gems are even worth the trouble to fake. No one is going to make a doublet for a twenty or thirty dollar stone.

Either way, the garnets I received from c0ffer were indeed garnets.

I appreciate the disclaimer as well I definitely don't believe there were any accusations being made, just a message of caution to those who can get overzealous with buying gems. The gem bug can be a contagious one

I am all about the destructive scratch test...I wouldn't do it on really nice stones since you are gouging them, but having a beefy mineral collection let's you determine authenticity pretty easily. A steel file and a chunk of zircon go a long way for determining hardness.
