Anyone here played games like FGO, Epic Seven, or Summoners War before? Do you consider it to be some kind of gambling addiction if a player whales or spend tons of money in the game just to get a certain item?

For those who don't know, a gacha game is a genre of video game where players pull, spin, or roll using an in-game currency to receive a random item. That item can be something that could make their characters stronger or sometimes it's just some limited skin which has no effect other than to make their characters look cooler.

Gacha or sometimes called "Gashapon" in some RPG games is really addictive. Not just to acquire that monster stats stuffs but usually, it was also composed of items that will bring stunning looks at the appearance of a character e.g costumes, wings, mounts, etc.

Is it gambling? Yes, as you need to purchase an in-game currency first before rolling it. In most cases, the price is not that cheap that's why only the game whales can manage to overuse it. However, the reward might not be x10, x20, or x30 of the bet amount like on the usual gambling game but rather in-game items of that said game.

Is it an addiction to consider? Yes, for game freaks especially whales.

Gacha games basically swapped out the concept of receiving money for spending money, instead replacing it with cosmetics, art, whatever you call it. Then they add their own odds to it which is basically really really bad if you see it from a gambling perspective, but is rather normal from a gaming perspective.

It's addicting yes, but it can also be controlled since they, well, give out free stuff. I wouldn't consider playing the game itself addicting/gambling, the game itself gives you chances or opportunities to grind up and earn currencies you can use to get stuff but spending money to get a specific item (Which in most cases, happens to EVERYTHING that they release) can basically end up a curse of you spending all the time. It can be considered addiction to some extent if you can't control your finances, but well it's much lighter than gambling imo.

I've played it, but luckily it's a style of play that didn't captivate me... thankfully.
Generally these types of games are heavily centered on the purpose of having to spend money frequently to be able to evolve, because if you don't do that you end up stagnant in the game, there is usually no progress if you try to advance without continuing to make frequent contributions.
Anyway... they are usually highly addictive and quite expensive games.

I am not a Gacha player but like what you asked? yes in the past I did played and spends tons of Money In online game in which after more than 10 years? the game closed and all my efforts and expenses turns to nothing .
this will add nothing for my concern about new games now so yes I will never engage in something similar from then till future.

I have played them before. They are designed to maximize your spending snd use many techniques that encourage addictive behavior. A lot of the content is only available for a limited time so you will FOMO and spend money to pull the character or item you want before their banner goes away.

Diablo Immortal was a game that recently launched and it was so controversial because many people considered it's monetization to be very predatory. Gacha games can be fun to play but I dislike their addictive nature and how they can be greedy when it comes to monetization.

Gacha Games are almost the same as gambling but the concept developed is not as gambling but as a game with the theme "Paid To Win" and not for "Free To Play", the more you do Gacha and the potential to get something good and very strong you can get, This strategy has been widely used in many status-based games because Gacha usually contains items that can strengthen the needs you need and cannot be obtained easily or you can say the item is "Rare".

Not a fan of any game now though in the past I remember playing mobile games but had stopped long ago.

there are also some Apps that still in my mobile but those are gambling apps that I use to play when I'm bored.

Maybe I will check this thread for further game sharing and may consider to play one of those.

I seem to have seen such a game in the NFT game project. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of the project.
they use tokens to upgrade skills and open eggs which we will never know what is inside.

Gacha games like that have loyal players. willing to burn their money to acquire special NFT skills, characters, or even assets.
I don't think it will be of any value to the general public. but in their community, of course, everything they spend has value.

I believe this is already implemented on Play to Earn games on NFT but not on gambling because no one will gamble on this games if you have small bank roll since whale players will just it your bankroll if ever you manage to encounter whales. This type of game is only possible on games and not on casino because this game genre is design for collectibles and rpg while casino game is purely aim to just win or lose the money without any complicated feature such collection of characters.

Personally, I have never had the pleasure of trying out "Gacha Games" but it does ring a bell. I think it has to do with Japanese gambling that was modified due to Japan's extremely strict gambling laws. They basically found a loop-hole in the law to make sure the payout was not in cash but in a token which you could then use to "purchase" certain prizes, like bars of gold (Which you could then exchange for actual money). It seems like a silly grey area that they should have gotten rid of already but the Japanese seem to enjoy gambling too much to close down the concept of Gacha...

Personally I would steer clear. Why? Because those tokens can become completely worthless the moment vendors decide not to accept them any longer.

It's the same as the traditional gambling games that we used to play but the reward and prize are in the form of items. So, I'd say that this is also gambling.
You're betting with in-game currency and it's an in-game way of gambling. And that item that has no effect which could be in no demand is like that you've just lost the game then since the item could have no to little value at all.

This type of game is addictive. In gambling addiction, it is just like any other type of addiction too when someone will be doing things he responsibly not want to do in a way that thing is taking more of his time than usual and also in the process, losing more than win, leading to irresponsible way of gambling. If a gamblers is playing gacha game with money (I mean using it to gamble), spending a lot and spending more time than usual, that is addiction.

It's an addiction, but not a gambling addiction I would say. In gambling, people spend with the expectation to win back, but this I have interpreted to be just like you said that the person only spends money to improve look or ability of their character. If you are willing to spend on looks and appearance of a game character, you are addicted. But not all addictions are entirely destructive and don't have any positive benefits. For one benefit, these games can provide better satisfaction for people who play them and the purchases are necessary to ensure the developers of the game can still keep benefitting as well.

A lot of these massively multiplayer online games have in-game currencies and you have to perform certain tasks to gain some virtual reward or item. I used to play a text based game called, Batmud and it was one of the most addictive games that I have ever played.

One of the most addictive roles I had played in this game, was to be an alchemist ....where you gathered or bought certain minerals or items and then you combined them to create rare or expensive potions or items with special abilities. A lot of the tasks had some roll of the dice elements to it.... and that made it a lot more challenging.

Some sensitive people seem to think games like this prepare kids for gambling... and that it is wrong, because games like this is targeted towards education and not teaching kids to gamble.

I don't recall the name of a game more specifically a Castlevania game for the Xbox 360 that you needed to farm a lot for a specific item.While this is not gambling it sure takes away a lot of your time in find those rare items as you have to complete a certain round thousand times before you were lucky enough to get it.It was a multiplayer game of 6 persons playing simultaneously together in clearing about 12 levels maximum at that time.

There are other games similar to this which need you to purchase a certain item to improve your character,to level him up or make him stronger,still this is not gambling but it is a sure thing that people who buy such things are only one step away from becoming gamblers and once become gamblers they have high chances of becoming addicted.

If i could get you clearly, do you purchase those item for gaming purpose of you acquired them to play and gain profits after winning the game?
if it's to make profit then i would say is considered to gambling. What would be your profit acquiring those items online without gambling, lemme say you did that for a purpose and is either you make profits from it or lose.

Definitely you have not been addicted before, that is why you can say that not all gambling addiction is addictive. In reality, all gambling addictions are destructive. The destructive that I mean is that is would be affect the gambler, especially financially. And if care is not taken, it can even lead to destruction. People can not gamble frequently and continue to win than lose, the person would lose than win, which is where the problem is going to begin.

I never played Gacha game but I think myself familiar with it because I love gaming in general. I think that type of game can definitely be counted gambling. But concept is bit different as you actually spend your money to buy things. (I mean, if you don't think about casino part of it). I feel like adding luck element to buying experience can be really fun. Games are best options out there that you can exactly implement this. It is bit niche but I think it's worth trying for gambling investors.
