I seem to recall that trying to reset via email may cause problems and could in fact lock me out.

Are you sure it's that you're remembering? I've not reset my password so I wouldn't know but I k ow there's people who've had accounts locked before after they've changed email address as it sends a link to autolock and account for 7 days (I think) and whoever breached their email got the link.

Stake a bitcoin address first here and ensure you're confident on signing a message with it: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.0

I can't say this'll be foolproof but it's probably the best way - unless you have one staked already you can sign just in case you do get locked out.

WI seem to recall that trying to reset via email may cause problems and could in fact lock me out.
I bet you are referring the recovering account using the secret question (although i can't see it where it can be seen now) here's the thread[1] about it, not the resetting password via email.

[1] PSA: ACCOUNTS WILL BE LOCKED IF THE SECRET QUESTION IS USED TO RECOVER IT

I seem to recall that trying to reset via email may cause problems and could in fact lock me out.

It happens only if you reset password using the secret question but via forgot password there is nothing to worry about account is getting locked unless you click the link which will be sent to you email which says lock your account if this recovery made by unauthorised access.

So the way is simple, click forget password and reset the new password via link sent to your email.

I changed my profile password several times and I never faced any problems.
Best way to do this is from profile Account Related Settings, you just enter new strong unique password, verify it, and enter old password on the bottom, to change your account.
It's not a bad idea to use separate email address dedicated only for bitcointalk forum.

At the risk of stating the obvious: can't you get the password from your browser? Depending on the browser it should be somewhere in Settings > Passwords > Saved Logins > Search "Bitcointalk" > View password.

Normal this should be working for getting the password shown , its also possible that the OP can export the saved password and import it to the new browser.
For sure depends what browser he is using now , but with the import and export thing all should be good.
Also i guess there should be no problem for reset your password if you still have the same email adress and you have access to it.

You can follow two steps to reset your account password
1. Reset password on another mobile or computer.
To protect your account you can reset your account on another mobile or computer. for him  will need the Gmail used in your account and a code will be sent to that Gmail that code will be required. For this you don't have to log out the account from your old computer.

2. You can view the previous password of your account.
You don't need to reset your account password if you forgot it.
Since you said your account password is stored on an old computer browser. Then you can view your password from there if you want.

You can follow the steps given below to find out the password. Browar<setting<password<view and manage saved passwords in your Google account

Some people do not like something like that. When they are registering or login in using such browser, there would be an option to save the password or not. If not saved, the password would not be saved on the broswer and nothing would be seen if you want to access the password again.

Some people that are privacy and security conscious do not like saving password like that because it can be accessed through the browser which create a means for hackers to get hold of someone's password. On browsers like Chrome, users can sign in through email and all the password saved through the browser and the likes (like apps) would be synchronising with Google cloud.

All I knew before was that Chrome would first ask for login, but I was surprised when I noticed my chrome logged me in through my email on my new android device. I have some password used for somethings in past  which I clicked on save (save password) and I just checked right now, everything can be seen just through the Chrome and other means that it can be accessed.

I understand that you know all these, but I am surprised to notice that I did not sign in on Chrome but it now sign people in automatically. I checked on of my relative phone just now also, but Android 12 (mine is android 11), the 'password' has even be changed to 'password manager' by android/chrome developers. Not a safe means at all as Google cloud, iClod and other online clouds are not recommended for saving sensitive passwords.

This could be a means some people's social media account, exchange account (especially if 2FA is not included) and many other accounts can be attacked by hackers.

You can change your account password by email if you use real email for registration and still have access to it.

In addition, you must store your password safely by writing it down on paper; save it on your computer; use a password manager.

Password should be strong too. It makes sense to remind you because you will change your password to a new one that should be strong.

"Some people" aren't relevant here:

Google is terrible for privacy. A while ago, I was not amuzed when I found out Chromium uploaded all my passwords to Google's servers. I then disabled it, but it never asked me if it's okay.

If you are using an old Microsoft Internet Explorer browser,  there is no provision to view passwords but I have had great success with:

Alternative-
OP can simply land on the login page and go to the inspect element of the page.
From there, search with "password", change the password type into text from password, and hit enter. That's pretty much easy to get the password.

I really can't remember if the saved password can be accessible if someone is using Internet explorer through my above trick. I think it's possible.

Edit- I just tried browsing the older version online and there's an option of page source.

No kidding, I guess you learned your lesson Grin
I disabled option in my browser to save passwords and I think using external open source password manager is much better idea.
Problem is that many people use saving of passwords in browser with their mobile devices because it's more convenient.

I heard android phones are secretly reporting to google all the time what you are doing, if you are walking, seating, riding a bicycle, running, or standing...
They collect much more things and I don't understand why would they need to know that without asking a question about it.

I heard android phones are secretly reporting to google all the time what you are doing, if you are walking, seating, riding a bicycle, running, or standing...
Last week, I was talking about buying a trimmer with my wife. It wasn't over phone. It was my surprise to see ads for trimmers everywhere. I don't think it's a coincidence. We are being tracked all the time. It's hard to avoid all these. Also, it's not me. I have seen this a few times on quora/Reddit, asked by some other people.

OP, best to try LoyceV's suggestion. If your password is still saved in your browser, you can recover it very easily.

I have heard similar stories from some of my friends and relatives. I think it is possible, but I still cannot quite believe it. I am trying to imagine what the technical and logistical requirements would be to eavesdrop on billions of users all the time non-stop. And for what purpose? To serve us targeted ads? I don't know, it seems like overkill. Are you absolutely sure that you have not searched the web for trimmers, or perhaps visited some online stores in the meantime? It doesn't have to be on the same device.

Problem is that many people use saving of passwords in browser with their mobile devices because it's more convenient.
I did that too in the past, but I understand what the risks are. I have no problem entrusting my browser for the bitcointalk account password although this is not a practice that can really be recommended to anyone who is very concerned about their privacy. But now I no longer save it.

Google can monitor user activity even for something you didn't think about before. They can find out how many thousand steps you took today, your heart rate or maybe many things. This is a common problem now when users allow the service to record everything.

They collect much more things and I don't understand why would they need to know that without asking a question about it.
When users agree to the terms of service from google then they will be safe to do so, but many users don't want to read them [included me], this is the easiest mistake we have made with google so far which may be bad for privacy.

I second the suggestion to stake an address just in case something goes wrong. Seeing that you have a Donator account, you'll be glad you did that.

Maybe because you searched for "trimmer" on Google Search?
