Why do I have to care for what people have to say?

because people care for their reputation   as for me i also don't.
it is however our family that will hear something from other people. especially when you live in a small town where everybody knows each other. people will says something no matter what. even when you just smoke a cigarette in your backyard, they find faults. we're in 2022 anyway, just do it online.

If in my place, gambling was allowed, maybe it would be okay and not damage my reputation because they could see me gambling with my friends.
In addition, I will explain to them that I play gambling only for entertainment and maybe I will invite them to play with me.
It will make them see that in gambling, we play just to have fun with friends and end it as soon as we get that fun.
I think they can take it well if we can give the reason we play gambling because maybe they do the same with us.

Privacy is important.

Every person has many different aspects to them, and each person can decide what to show to different people.

For example, you will behave in one way with your family and in a different way with your employees, customers, or boss.

The students in this case shouldn't know your private life, which includes gambling.

That way you don't have to explain it to anyone other than yourself.

As long as you bet in a rational and controlled manner, no, it does not damage your reputation. In the case of playing poker I would say it is the opposite because it has a kind of aura. If they find out that you are a regular winning poker player they will probably be interested in it.

I will hide my gambling activities as best I can, because gambling in the country where I live is strictly prohibited and is always viewed negatively by society. But if anyone knows I love to gamble and there is solid evidence that it is widespread, there is no choice but to ignore it.
and most importantly I explained to the people closest to me especially my family that I bet only for fun and also only use the money I can afford to lose, and as long as gambling doesn't ruin my life, I think there is no problem. And it would be a problem or shame if my life was ruined by gambling or addiction, and once everyone knows and until the news is gone, I will also be more careful and also more stealthy when gambling again.
and not because I was embarrassed or had my reputation tarnished by being caught gambling, but because I was more concerned with the reputation of my family than my own. Because my family is a good family, and also religious that I have to take good care of.

I think that this depends on the environment. If you are in the right environment and people didn't care so much about that. I think that the culture in any environment was also affecing how others are seeing you after they known if you are a gambler. This is what i know from what i have been watching before. You can abandon them but they may also try to hurt you. We must choose the right environment to live with.

If he/she is someone playing for fun then I don't think it is anybody's business. If he/she is a gambling addict then this is another story. An addict will play these games excessively and lose everything he/she does in the end. His car, house, marriage (if he has one), his retirement funds... A person like that can't teach the children anything meaningful because his mind always be at the casino and won't be able to focus on the subject which he was teaching.

Gambling is equally not a sin, but that's when you gamble responsibly with common sense, and not putting either your life, that of your family members, or finance at risk. So if I were in this shoe of being a lawyer or teacher in a reputable university who gambles for fun/entertainment, I won't ignore what people say, but I will try to make anyone who ever approaches me know why I gamble, and explain that it's just for fun, and keep mute to whoever has decided to gossip from a distance, because this life is actually not two my friend, to keep worrying about what people think or say about you in this world.

-   Gambling is just like Bitcoin, where it is open to anyone or everyone who wants to try it whether you are rich or poor, whether you are a professional or not, whether you are a businessman or not.

Now if you are a professional and gambling is just a hobby for you, and it does not destroy your personality or affect your profession and you know how to handle it and you have control over your limit, I think there is no problem with that, as long as they see that they see no negative impact on your personality and profession.

For some communities, this has nothing to do with respect or anything else, it's just simply a game like a sport or just a hobby. But in the other community where people don't practice this thing, you are not a good person for them because a gambling addict usually became a thief or not, a beggar who will look for anything he could, to finance his addiction and this is something you don't understand unless you see an actual person who is seriously addicted. I once see a person who was so addicted that he climbs his friend's fence just to ask for some money to be able to play again and this happened at 2 AM in the morning when everyone is asleep. His friend shouted at him angrily for doing such a thing and I woke up because of that and relate this story to you guys. I cannot believe that I'm saying this here but obviously no matter what profession that dude has, he just loses some respect from his friend.

In my estimation, you only owe people explanation when you gamble so much that it affects your daily functioning or how you live your life. That is you run into debts or you can't go a day without gambling or thinking about it. Gambling for entertainment is totally fine. You are not into it and it harms no one. Depends on which country and what kind if culture you're into.
I am from a country that people view professional people as a professional being inside and outside of work. Especially for the select few professions like teacher and police officers. People would expect them not to go to any bar or casinos, otherwise it'll decrease their reputation.
But, that's an old practices and beliefs though. We are in a modern world where everyone has a freedom and just doing your job well. So, it don't matter to me , though there are like almost half of the population here who still live with old practices and beliefs.

Although gambling is legal here in our country that does not mean that you have to show people that you gamble, and here in our country it depends on the kind of gambling you are engaged in, you can bet in a lottery, and its ok as the majority are taking their chances to bet on the lottery, its acceptable, but when they hear or see you in cockpit arena or casinos people will have a bad impression of you, so if you're a professional and you want to gamble pick the gambling activity that you want to involve in and gambling activity that you need to hide.

The best thing that you can do to let them know and believe that you are a responsible gambler is by practicing it instead of saying it or rubbing it to their face. No one will really believe if you'll just say it. You should prove it to them by actions and not by words. Although it's not really your responsibility to prove yourself and on how responsible you are. But if you want to, through actions would be better because they can see the benefits of gambling and would not just focus on its repercussions.

There is really a stigma in gambling. Once people knew that you are a gambler, they will view you in another perspective such as being irresponsible, addict, or even a lazy fella. We can't really blame them because that's how the reputation of gambling in the mainstream media is. Since most people don't understand the need of other people to gamble, they just view them as lazy individuals and irresponsible ones because instead of focusing on what they deem important, they focus more in gambling. Some can't grasp the idea that we have different priorities which make them easily conclude such.

If you are a teacher in a respected university, there is no crime or I'll feeling,  but a teacher of pupils or students below 18 years is not supposed to gamble to the extent that people will understand. I gamble but if I want to keep it as a secrete for 50yrs, I will and no friends, family or neighbours will understand. It is means my phone, I'll not even use the system. No one will understand what is going on, it is the traditional gambling that people will go to the gambling station physical and thru will be known as gamblers. The internet has solved so many problems for us.

If I am a good teacher to my students and a good faculty to my co-teachers then I there is nothing to worry. I am not a compulsive gambler, so what is wrong with it? I won't be the first one to approach my co-workers because it only shows I am guilty and defensive. I would tell my class the truth in case they think bad on me. And I would also tell my co-workers if they will ask me about it. Just make it simple and honest. There is no big deal here.

If you live in a country where gambling is illegal, then it's make sense many people will think you're a bad person. I think if people around you discover you're a gambler, you can give an excuse like it's just a gambling ads and you didn't play gambling. You would have a problem if you're a gambler because any person can make a report since you're breaking a law of your country.

But there could be a backfire once your students know it by using the habit against you when you make a mistake.
Then, it could become a wildfire, and the gossip about being just a casual gambler becomes an addicted gambler even though it's not true.
So better, just stay away from local casinos where you are visible and use private rooms with friends.

AFAIK there is also a disciplinary action for misconduct like having a relationship with a student, there had been many incidents like this.
If gambling is considered a misconduct then its an offense that will affect reputation too.

For what I know, lawyers have specific offenses like leaking confidential information of clients or something like that. A distant cousin who is a lawyer from a government is now allowed to have a Facebook account. So his was deactivated.

I tried searching about lawyers misconduct and professional ethics , it includes gambling in public. One that I can quote is

gambling, alcohol, or other addiction may succumb to the temptation to misappropriate client
funds or property at the end of an engagement without the client realizing it. Where the client
made an advanced payment of fees or costs, or where funds belonging to the client otherwise
