ACINQ #2435 proposed initial support for async payment trampoline relay that can temporarily hold funds until a node restores its internet connection.
Éclair will require a third party to delay forwarding the funds until the offline node can restore its connection.

you can read more https://github.com/ACINQ/eclair/pull/2435 or https://protos.com/offline-bitcoin-lightning-payments-will-soon-be-possible/

Interesting, I know it's been discussed for a while. But, to me, I just see it as an answer in search of a question.
Yes, my phone may not be online all the time, but the back end node it talks to is. A store can't take CC payments now if it does not have internet, I can't send PayPal or Venmo or whatever without internet.
Having the ability to transact with the Lightning network without internet is nice, but I would call it more a stretch goal, not something short term.
More reliable routing and some other things would IMO be better 1st.

I use lightning a lot both public and behind TOR. I connect my phone and desktop wallet to my nodes. I for now just don't see this as a big deal.

Others, obviously think differently.

Interesting, I know it's been discussed for a while. But, to me, I just see it as an answer in search of a question.

I'm pretty certain this is a very common opinion if you're in a country with pretty consistently working cellular data. On the other hand, this might be a total godsend for people in poorer countries/cities with bad reception.

This is a great idea and probably a great move, but to me their might be a little bit of confusion when it comes to the transaction success, lets take for instance this development is has been done and payment are being carried out and store offline and a user like me, who usually set my gas limit when ever i want to send a btc transaction to minimum gas that can be charge, and leave it until the transaction finally execute and sometimes most of the transaction cancel in the process, and what if this kind of transaction has already been recorded by the said third party custodial which are in charge of the offline transaction and the person which i sent payment to has already release my goods to me since he/she is sure of the payment and in the process my transaction bounce back. who will be head responsible for such?

I was thinking that if you are in a country with bad reception / poor internet you are probably more likely to be using cash rather then something that does require internet.
I could be overthinking it, but I don't see people who don't have good internet using something that by definition requires it to function.

Once again, I am not saying that this is a bad idea, just that there are other things that I feel are more important.

Somewhat interesting, I saw on Twitter someone sent Bitcoin without internet and only used the USSD code by sending on a Lighting Network address, some parts of Africa have used this a lot and of course it's still in development stage which I read from news sources.
But what's interesting is that when we are in a region that is not very good on the internet then this is indeed the best solution.
I saw in the video it looks very simple to send Bitcoin Lighting with USSD code.

Somewhat interesting, I saw on Twitter someone sent Bitcoin without internet and only used the USSD code by sending on a Lighting Network address,

The topic talks about sending bitcoin using the lightning network without the need for the recipient to be connected to the Internet, which is completely different from sending bitcoin, which does not need the recipient to be connected to the Internet.

As for the solution contained in the tweet, it depends on a custodial solution (third party) and therefore you should use it only for daily spendings with trust to unknown third party.

I guess. Probably something that's less important than some other stuff, but it's definitely a great feature to have for those people who still insists to use BTC despite problems with internet connection. Let's just say the world is better with it than without it.  Grin

Could be, but the person receiving would also need to be able to verify it. So, if it's a local transaction, and niether party has reception then it's not really a solution for anyone. No vendor is going to sell goods or services without confirmation of the transaction. At least, with Bitcoin because of the way it works.

I can see niche situations where this does apply, and that's great. I don't think it's as revolutionary as some users are suggesting though. It's just a nice to know feature.

I've recently approached lightning network technology and I'm studying it for the moment, and I think this proposal is very interesting, but how many possibilities will it have of real use? how will it be possible to keep track on the blockchain if payments can also be made offline?

I'm not an expert in Bitcoin lightning but correct me if I am wrong - Basically, this send bitcoin via lightning without internet connection and will be processed while there is a connection available what if the sender decides not to connect to internet is receiver still get the bitcoin that spendable.

I know offline payment by using paper wallet or opendime but if this this flawless it would be great  Grin
