I do not expect that at the individual level you can do anything, these things need the efforts of a state and perhaps sometimes several countries to be able to control the wrath of nature in the event of a flood, many countries where such painful incidents occur and they cannot do anything and they ask for the help of the United Nations and the international community Often times to be able to afford flood damage, even developed nations suffer such things We heard a few days ago about the Arizona hurricane and the massive damage it caused.

Exactly this is caused by us humans, deforestation, indiscriminate mining of minerals, excessive destruction of nature, industrial zones spring up more and more... causing the earth to gradually warm up. All this just to serve human needs in a modern world and now we are paying the price for what we did. Droughts and floods I don't think there's any way to stop them, what we can do is that at the national level, we all work together to rebuild a greener, cleaner earth, then we can avert these disasters.

I guess the simplest solution would be to dig a trench near the edge of the flood zone to redirect flood waters to a lower elevation area. I have heard of large industrial pumps moving more than 200 gallons of water a minute. That could be another option. Could a large number of underwater flares or fires be used to boil the water away?

If a number of large cargo helicopters or airships were available. It might be possible for them to scoop up flood waters with large buckets which could be transported and dumped somewhere else. Large industrial scale sponges might serve a similar purpose. Large mirrors might be used to redirect sunlight onto flood waters, to evaporate them at a faster pace.

With flooding on that scale, there might be no easy or fast solution.

It is also possible to profit from flood waters. It can be filtered and and sanitized to convert into potable drinking water or split via electrolysis to generate hydrogen fuel.

The ground in my area has a high concentration of deep gravel and lava rock. Which causes it drain well. No matter how much it rains, there is always enough ground absorption for no puddles to form.

Some regions have high concentrations of clay in the soil forming a moisture barrier, not unlike a massive roll of plastic, preventing water from draining.

Flooding, which can be either man-made or natural, is in fact one of the biggest disasters we have. The best thing we as individuals can do is ask for assistance from the local government, especially natural disaster management, as they are the ones who can offer a solution to your problem, however every solution comes with a significant cost such as budget and supplies to implement such solution. For the time being, move your house far from a river or dam since these structures are very prone to flooding. You should also teach your countrymen, especially the younger ones, the value of planting trees as this is the best approach to reduce flooding in your region.

It reminds me of my government. Over the years we are tired of floods and built many dams to overcome this, but still flooding is a major problem in our country. Whereas in the colonial era, flooding was not a problem because they built a lot of drainage and the best irrigation system. But because it is a colonial product, our government is reluctant to use it. But now our government has started to learn about the irrigation system directly from the country, and with a combination of innovations, the flooding in our city has started to be a bit less. So the point is to learn from people who already know how to solve problems.

Flood is a natural disaster that can be caused by 2 factors, namely the lack of public awareness of litter, and the geographical sector of the area that has the potential to flood due to the condition of the land which has a lower land area plus heavy rainfall. I'm sure the government has tried to deal with it, but that doesn't mean they can really avoid flooding quickly. Various solutions have been tried, but they all require cooperation between the local community and the local government. Because when they are not given facilities to dispose of their waste, this triggers them to ignore which waste should be burned and which organic can be stored as agricultural fertilizer. Well that's all the old story where the Flood from the dam has no proper drainage or clogged drains. No matter how big you submit a proposal to the government, in fact they will ignore it all. Apart from spending a lot of money, they make sure the money goes into their pockets before being distributed to the cleaning district.

You once said that floods are natural so that means it is unavoidable. The only thing that a government can do is to put up a sign to those areas which are flood prone and they also need to relocate the people living on that area for them to be safe. Lastly they need to make a rule about littering, that the person that are caught are going to be fined or they can also be sent to jail if they keep on doing it.

For those governments who fail to follow all those practices then they may be corrupt. This is why some people can blame the government sometimes and we also blame those people because we think they are only depending on the government for help.

I can feel your pain. The flood is something else. My friends have to leave their houses even there is no road to crossover to continue your journey. But as an individual can u really change it? We u can if u have a strong backup and force but can't if u are all alone. Nigerian Government will not deny the fact that they were not aware that the flood will occur because National Weather service forecaster do give all necessary info about that. Also within these forecasters solutions to remedy this situation has been presented in one way or the other yet they didn't value it because human lives means nothing to them.
My own suggestion is allow the government to seek for the right remedy from the subject themselves then u gather ur and send. If not u are just thinking in vain because they won't value it.

All your comments have been much appreciated, and despite the lacadescical attitude of government officials and other political officials towards the plight of the masses. I am determined to do what I can in order to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the floods. The following is what I would do:

• Proposals to lobby the government for support in enforcing building regulations.
• Appeal to donors and other organizations to donate relief materials.
• Media campaigns to raise awareness of the dangers of building on waterways and indiscriminately dumping refuse
• Printing in local languages on flood prevention etc

I sympathize with your tragedy and support your opinion. Little depends on ordinary people. We are all noble in our desires, and everyone understands that there are flaws when any disaster happens, but the trouble is that our complaints do not change anything. If everything happens as you describe, then it is not clear what the governing bodies are waiting for in order to prevent the recurrence of floods. Maybe those figures of human casualties do not impress them? It is unfortunate that in the 21st century, during the development of various technologies, a person can still not argue with natural disasters. And the leaders of these countries are engaged in a tug-of-war for power instead of properly organizing the security of their people.

I really do appreciate your support, I lost a relative in the recent happenings and it's still hurts. Now more people are in a detrimental state as a result of the recent flood, the water is currently above chest level as those who haven't improvised by bringing in canoe already will be left grasping for breathe ( sucks ). Also, all of those telecommunications aren't working no more cause electricity and water don't get along. Trying to reach someone from that ends has been difficult, what about food ? Those perishable foods must have gone bad already and I have been pondering how they have coped though.

Petrol and gas are now the new Bitcoin (hold down for life ) cause those route's leading to get those Premium methylated spirit have been totally damaged by flood, petroleum has been very high and will leed to scarcity in few days time.
And those who resides down the west how do they come back to schools located down the southern part of Nigeria? Federal University just called of the lingering strike which has held academics to be delayed for over 8 months already. Even if they start doing so, those bus driver's will inflate the price for transportation just bto satisfy those selfish desires of them goofy arse.

It sucks you see, 63 years of independence and we haven't really been doing our own thing, Those politician's needs to be wiped off with brute force, but then, who will bell the cat ? Every youth scared of lossing them lives, they be securing Visa's outta them trenches. GOD help 💚🤍💚

What's more disturbing is that, try to come to people's aid with some help through the government like donations and they will suck all of those fund's, imagine what they did during COVID-19 ? As a person who lives in a place that cannot be flooded (would be very shocking if waters could come all the way where I live) and even during high rain periods it’s a bit of a hill, which means it goes downhill to another town, that means I never really had to worry about it, plus rocky mountain places rarely get earthquakes as well, and when we do, we are protected by it because it's solid structure thanks to hard base.

All these combined, I never really had to worry about any of this, and I am doing better thanks to it as well. All these people who have to worry about it, makes me realize how lucky I am to live where I live right now.

Less pavement and more green spaces help absorb water instead of funneling it all away—a win-win for people and urban ecosystems.

Like anything else, water is great in moderation urbanites need it to survive, but downpours can flood streets and homes. And as you might have noticed, climate change isnt good at moderation. A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, supercharging storms to dump more water quicker, which can overwhelm municipal sewer systems built for the climate of long ago. Thus you get the biblical flooding thats been drowning cities around the world, from Zhengzhou, China, to Seoul, South Korea, to Cologne, Germany, to New York City.

In response, urban planners are increasingly thinking of cities less as rain jackets designed to whisk water away as fast as possible before it has a chance to accumulate and more as sponges. By deploying thirsty green spaces and digging huge dirt bowls where water can gather and percolate into underlying aquifers, sponge cities are making rain an asset to be exploited instead of expelled.

Where once there were forests and fields and wetlands that would soak up the rain, these have been paved over and replaced with surfaces that do not absorb rain, says Michael Kiparsky, director of the Wheeler Water Institute at the University of California, Berkeley. Those are hard materials like concrete sidewalks, asphalt roads, and roofs, which funnel runoff into gutters, storm drains, and sewers.

The denser cities are developed, the more impervious surfaces are used, the worse the impacts of climate change are becoming, Kiparsky continues. Once the capacity of these structures is exceeded, then water starts backing up, and its problems are exacerbated because of the lack of the natural absorbency of large areas of soil and vegetation.

Any good city planner knows the value of green spaces, but traditionally these have been used mainly for public enjoyment. Sponge city designers also use them as a tool for managing increasingly furious rainstorms. An inch of rain dumped over the course of an hour is more likely to overwhelm stormwater infrastructure than the same inch of water falling over 24 hours a problem for places like in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where storms have gotten significantly wetter over the past half century. The long and short of it is: more intense and more frequent, says Tony Igwe, senior group manager of stormwater at the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority, which is sponge-ifying the city. Theres a lot of work going on not just in Pittsburgh, but especially in the mid-Atlantic, to really look at those numbers in the next few years.

This is becoming a major issue all over the world. Which should receive more focus and attention.

On the polar opposite spectrum, we have areas like Lead Mead in Las Vegas which are near to depleting their local water supply.

If money, energy, materials, labor and routes of supply were no factor. We might build a pipeline to connect drought stricken areas with flooded regions via pipelines to funnel excess water into areas with water scarcity.

There are already underseas internet cables connecting the world via internet. Natural gas pipelines like nordstream travel underwater in places to transport natural gas. Perhaps water pipelines will become a thing in the future?

What works for personal situations:
- move to higher ground
- if you live in a single house, a 2 to 5 meter tall concrete fence, make it one foot thick, depending on the soil and the proximity of the river just as deep a foundation for it so that the water doesn't push it all around, in short, a solution 4-5 times more expensive than buying a house on higher ground
- for usual floods (not dam releases like the mentioned one) mobile flood barriers or perimeters barriers, but that won't help you with a few meters tall waves

What doesn't work:
- petitions and proposals to the governments

But at the national level, there are two things that can be done, create tall river embankments when those pass through or near the city,  the other floodway, and floodplains, one simple google search on floodplains management will get you more material than the guys in the government are willing to read.

More than 600 people are now known to have perished in the worst floods in a decade in Nigeria, according to a new toll released Sunday.

The disaster had also forced more than 1.3 million from their homes, said a statement by Nigeria's ministry of humanitarian affairs, released on Twitter.

“Unfortunately, over 603 lives have been lost as of today October 16, 2022," Humanitarian Affairs Minister Sadiya Umar Farouq said.

The previous toll from last week stood at 500, but the numbers had risen in part because some state governments had not prepared for the floods, the minister said.

The flooding also destroyed more than 82,000 houses and nearly 110,000 hectares (272,000 acres) of farmland, said Umar Farouq.


While the rainy season usually begins around June, the rainfall had been particularly heavy since August, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

In 2012, 363 people died and more than 2.1 million were displaced by flooding.

Sub-Saharan Africa is disproportionately affected by climate change and many of its economies are already struggling from ripple effects of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Rice producers have warned that the devastating floods could impact prices in the country of some 200 million people where rice imports are banned to stimulate local production.

The World Food Program and the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization said last month that Nigeria was among six countries facing a high risk of catastrophic levels of hunger.

This is the third time flood is happening in Nigeria,  the first flood took place in 2012,  lives and property was lost and it happened again the second time and now the third time.this is something the government could have handled if really they are concerned about it. If the government don't do anything again about to prevent flood it can happen again.
