Is it Wrong for BTT user to ask for Donation as a Flood Victim?

Nigerian Flood Victim
Nigeria was flooded from the month of September 2022. The flood started from the Northern part of the country and the month of October 2022 the flood sank thousands of houses in the southern part of the country. Particular my home state (Bayelsa) which is highly affected more than any other parts in the country.

So as a flood victim in the forum, I am asking to know if it is wrong to ask for the support from the forum users. Or will the community go against if I asked for the support from the community in this situation? I am asking because I am deeply affected by the flood. I have lost properties, though I raised up  some of the properties because there was no vehicle movement to pack the things so I left them there, and lodged in a hotel and since no one was around in the compound, arm robbers came in and stole my valuable properties. As it is I am out of funds.

High cost of Living
The road that was connected the East and South has been broken into three parts so no fuel and food stuff comes in so the people who sells at the region increase the prices of goods and services x5. Fuel that was sold at the rate of $0.39 per litre is now $1.9 and fuel price determine any other goods prices in the country.

So as a flood victim in the forum, I am asking to know if it is wrong to ask for the support from the forum users. Or will the community go against if I asked for the support from the community in this situation? I am asking because I am deeply affected by the flood. of course, it's fine if you're looking for support here on the forum. Community means sticking together when trouble happens. the problem is that good intention to help someone are often misused, so a good part of the members have become a little distrustful when it comes to donations.

I would suggest you, considering you are from Nigeria and as far as I can see, your local is quite active with several established members, you should start from there. Invite some other members from there to action, so try it together.
You must be transparent with all of the donated money.

I’ve seen a thread already with regards to this one, they are also asking for a donation specifically for this flooding problem in Nigeria, will try to look for that thread and maybe you can work together to get more funds and use it on behalf of the donators.


I suggest to look for an escrow that can offer a service for at least a cheaper PF, so the donator will not hesitant to help and give some. Flooding is also a problem in my country, fortunately it didn’t last that long. Praying for the safety of everyone there.

You can do this kind of donation since its for a community and not for your personal interest. Many user already started this kind of donation thread on different country that devastated by a natural disaster.

Use the Services section for your Donation thread and prepare the proper documentation and accounting of the money donated to avoid issue about misuse of funds. Keep safe and I hope for a fast recovery for that area. I experienced how hard to live on an environment with flood due to different sick due to that dirty water.

It is not wrong or forbidden to ask for help, although I would ask a question about what would be sufficient help for you? Given that you are in a sig campaign that pays you $220 a month max, are we talking about a few hundred $ or much more in the sense that it would change your current situation?

An alternative is to ask for a loan from those who provide such possibility on the forum, although before that I recommend that you familiarize yourself with the rules before you ask for such a service.

I understand. Because of the things unscrupulous users do in the forum most people who are willing to donate restrict themselves.

Yes I am in a Sr member in the forum but the campaign I am is paying me full member rank payout not Sr member Rank pay rate. So accumulatively, it is $160 not $220 monthly.

IMHO, its not wrong to ask for a help, because generally we seek help when we can't really do anything so for the survival we may ask which depends on every individual. I didn't faced such worse scenario so I can't really or imagine the situation but I witnessed such natural calamities and people stuck in their house and many people even lost house due to floods and got the accomodation in the neighborhood.

But people nearby who can helped by giving foods, accommodation, or anything if possible so together as community may help to survive anything then being fedup with the situation.

Also don't forget this is public forum so you won't get much help and it can actually give bad impression so just don't give up because everyone is on their own.

Thanks for the additional information, I was simply wondering how much that income can help you cope with the current situation - and according to the data I found, the minimum wage in your country is $70, and the average is around $170.

I think it's depends on the user who create the thread and how trusted he's, you can't expect a random newbie to create a thread about donation since no one will believe. But if there's an official news where the country had a natural disaster and the trusted account is responsible with the money, it will be allowed.

Unofficial rule. And as far as I understand this was there for beggars who create account only to beg money. We have seen a lot of them.
The member (OP) has contributed to the community and have a history of a year on the forum. He is contributing good enough which we can see from his earned merit. Earned 700+ from 800+ posts. It would not be possible if he was not devoting his time to this community. I think this is okay to ask donation for himself and we should support it.

Asking for donations isn't that bad but the abuse that may come through it is the fear because before you know it everyone will be coming up with flood pictures to claim being a victim, but there's a better way of doing so, if you can get connected to eome reputable members of the forum who have been trusted by many to vouch for the authenticity of your experience after thorough investigations and then create a thread for the donation where the funds generated could be properly channeled to the right and intended purpose with fareness.
