My uncle's birthday is around the corner ( two weeks to this time ) and I want to gift him something related to crypto, the last time we talked he is so interested in crypto and I told him to keep doing some research online, what do you think is the best gift for a 64 years old man? I am thinking about Doge coin or a Hardware wallet?

Erm. Probably help him correctly set up a software wallet on his phone then send him a certain amount of bitcoin. Not sure why DOGE is an option, knowing that Bitcoin's fees right now isn't even high.

Rather let the gramps attempt to set up the wallet himself (with OP closely guiding him of course), rather than handing over the finished product. So at the very least gramps would have a general idea on how wallets actually work.

if he is a beginner, and he obviously is, I am not sure how good it is for him to start with any phone wallet. Many things can go wrong there, just out of ignorance.
I worked as an internet provider reseller, and in general, most "beginners" do not have a clear idea of what online privacy means, or the importance of passwords/private keys.

Hardware wallets are probably the best starting point for everyone who is just starting to learn about crypto and wants to invest.

If you expect him to spend in the near future, then yes, hardware wallet is the way to go.

But I expect the elderly are not interested in new hardware and may have difficulties with a hardware wallet. In such a case you can generate on your own HW (or a an air gapped live OS) a new seed which you give to him (at least 2 separate copies!), along with an address - so kind of paper wallet(s) he can import in his hardware wallet in the future. And of course, fund that address for a good start.
Obviously, you will have to tell him about seed safety and about checking his address on a block explorer.

It seems your uncle is only get interested which mean he haven't bought any coin yet, right? If you give a hardware wallet, he will not think it's important and has a value. It's better for you to give him some coins in order to make him actually a holder of that's coin, personally I don't really think Doge is really good coin to give, Bitcoin is better. This will make him feel excited about the coins you gave and surely he will hold for long time.

That's where I planned to send the Doge coins to? He is a trust wallet user and he likes coins like Shiba inu and Doge coin. .

Well, then the best thing that you can do for his birthday is to educate him on the dangers of holding such useless shitcoins (you can show him all those altcoins that died during last bear market) and that he should focus on bitcoin instead. That + hardware wallet would make it a nice bday present I think.

You know what your grandfather prefers, but buying a hardware wallet for an old person who doesn't know much about cryptocurrencies would be a waste of money.
The best option is a collectible coin or made of gold and silver with a bitcoin address printed on it.

Start giving him something physical as gift like what the user above suggests which is Satori chip. This is a very cool crypto collectible coins that will make your gramps interested on it. Old man usually preferred something physical because they will not use the wallet or crypto since it's a new technology and they might just keep it without doing research on it.

I try to do this too to my parents when I'm on crypto but they just told me to convert the crypto gift to fiat so that they can use it since they are too old to learn crypto.

DOGE might be a fun gift, however BTC will really last a lot longer and obviously would be the safest choice. Bitcoin is still the leader in this market.

But, if he already owns some cryptocurrencies, a hardware wallet would be my choice - if he doesn't have one already. For those new to the crypto game, a hardware wallet is the most secure way to store your coins, and it has some additional benefits over software wallets. Having a hardware wallet is just part of being a crypto holder. It's like getting a bike after you've learned how to ride a bike, it just makes sense.

Don't be silly to give 64 years old grown man something like Doge, unless you want to make fun of him with shitcoins.
If you really want to give him something valuable think about giving him original coin - Bitcoin, that is decentralized and not controlled by clowns like Elon Musk.
You can also buy him some cool hardware wallet like Passport that looks like old mobile phones, or some other open source wallet like Trezor, Bitbox or Keaystone.

It's amazing that a 64 year old man is interested in crypto currencies. Usually, at this age, they are concerned about other issues than money. Since your case is unusual, I think the best gift for your uncle would be a hardware wallet. Why? Because this device is easy to use and a good way to secure their crypto currencies. Since your uncle is a trust wallet user then he knows how to operate a hot wallet, I believe gifting him a hardware wallet will do, the danger of using a hot wallet is high compared to using a hardware wallet. A hardware wallet all the way.
