I stumbled upon a story on social media and while it was quite hilarious, it dawned on me that we all could fall victim to such a situation but it would take a lot to look past what we see on the surface and study it further. This brings me to understand the saying that goes thus: do not judge the book by its cover. Let me give the summary of the story.

A man was given a packet of sugar and $10,000 in a church and was instructed by the giver to give the pastor the pack of sugar and take the $10,000.
Dutifully he went and did as he was asked but got rebuffed by the man of God and he instead took the cash and gave the member the pack of sugar.
Upset, the member went home and wanted to use the 'sugar' for tea only to discover $100,000 inside.

What should he do? Will he be sinner if he holds the money or should he send it to the rightful owner. Being a Christian with morals.

That's a nice story, but this thread should be on the off-topic board IMO.
I'm not going to comment on the religion (well maybe a little bit), but it seems that the courier should keep the $100,000, and it's the pastor's loss. The pastor shouldn't exhort the courier to give money to the church and violate the agreed terms.

Other than a good moral story of "don't judge the book by its cover," this is a fine example of how religion operates nowadays, or maybe they are always like this. It's all about money and lesser moral standards since everyone there, whatever their religions, are still a bunch of sinful human beings.

I don't think the man acted immorally if he decides to keep the money because it is now a gift that was given to him by the pastor. But it might be proper if he informs the person that gave them the package about what transpired so that he would not be blamed for the pastors greed and misuse of religious authority.

Feedback is usually expected when go on errands, As a Christian with morals the best action is to report back to the individual who gave you the $10000 and the pack of sugar for the pastor, and tell him what transpired between you and the pastor and how he greedily took the 10,000 dollars and give you the pack of sugar. From the amount of money he gave you, it shows that he is a generous individual, and may either increase the amount he gave to you or tell you to keep it for being credible and transparent and accountable. He will regard you in high esteem for being truthful.

Would you be amazed if the Christian with morals will go back to the pastor and give the $100K because he only wants to enjoy his coffee?

The fine line is already drawn since the pastor already gave the pack of sugar to him but if the pastor only knew there is $100K hidden inside the pack, The pastor will gladly take $110K and just maybe will give the pack of sugar.

The level of my morals will determine my next line of action, Money has different influence on different people and no can tell their reaction until the handle it. I haven't been in that situation so i won't be able to say emphatically what i might do, Been religious either as a Christian or any other religion can not stop what an individual has in mind. For now i will not say if i will be able to return the $100,000

I also read the story on Facebook and I laughed very well. The pastor deserved his greed. That is what most of them have turned to today. Money is their major concern for opening churches and not soul winning anymore. If we take my country for instance, every street has at least a church on it. It is about the offerings and tithes. Money lovers everywhere. No, the messenger will not be a sinner for not returning the cash to his greedy pastor. I will not return it and my conscience will not feel bad about it.

What should he do?
He should immediately contact a criminal defense lawyer and refuse to answer any questions when the police inevitably raid his house and arrest him during this obvious sting operation. Didn't he think it was suspicious that someone just gave him $10k cash to deliver a pack of "sugar"? And that there's now $100k cash in his home with no credible explanation of where it came from? Come on, nobody's going to buy this story about how it's all some secret test of Christian morals. Roll Eyes

Why didn't the courier just delivered the sugar as instructed by sender ,why he initially mentioned about money infront of anyone or pastor. And he did right by delivering the sugar now what pastor did is his intention and his action. Did the courier mention this infront of pastor that this sugar is for you and cash is for me. And literally what kind of story is this  Tongue

Seems like a made up story ,SORRY.

I like your review. related to the story in the Op, however, I will not comment on religious ones. this story can be applied to other characters, maybe the recipient is a corrupt policeman, a greedy state official, maybe the story will be more interesting. however, what you say is quite wise.

I totally agree, if that person tells the person who gave the order to deliver the sugar packet and the amount of money. how glorious he would be, if he did.

This story is quite interesting to me. let alone quoting the words of "don't judge a book by its cover" from these words, very implying a deep meaning, the recipient rejected the sugar but accepted the cash. he gave the sugar to the delivery man, the man got a fortune from the money in the sugar bag.

I don't want to say the recipient is greedy, maybe he just wants to share with the sender by sharing the sugar. what's interesting is Op's question, I wouldn't say the package sender is unscrupulous. if it turns out, he does not return the money he found. because after all, he found it in the sugar bag. however, how very wise, without having to relate it to sin and morals, he could do it.

because the contents of the amount of money that was in the sugar bag, were not what should belong to him.

Maybe that is also another way of looking at the story to teach morals to a world filled with vices and materialism. Today's people are lovers of money and themselves. So there has to be fictions with stories to counter such level of greed in today's living.

I like your review. related to the story in the Op, however, I will not comment on religious ones.

There is nothing wrong with discussing religion. Doing what is right is morality and that is what religion should be all about.

Oh! I saw that on Facebook and it got a lot of reactions and yeah, it wasn't an actual event from the look of it but still, illustrates a scenario that could play out in life.

Some religious leaders have become too attached to things of the world ad forget that religion is mainly about accepting what comes your way in good faith and at times intercede for better.

I would say the guy should keep the money his been blessed with. Its no fault of his that the pastor rejected his box and chose to bully him for his $10k. If it were actually sugar, he would have have left with it anyway and so the outcome shouldn't change of it is $100k.

I think what you said is right. The pastor become the destiny helper of the boy. This boy humbly obeyed instructions to submit what he was told but the greed of the pastor make him to lose what package that came to. If he didn't go to the pastor then we can say he did wrong but he didn't. This may be how God want to show favour to the boy
