I am sure that most are familiar with many old big altcoins in the space, what's worrying is that majority of them never see their old ATH again, it's possible that many new altcoins that did so well in 2021 might not see their ATH anymore, for example Nano and XRP

For a beginners topic, bitcoin is ultimately the best investment you could make because everyone in crypto knows it and most people outside of crypto do so it'd be the first one they turn to to invest (I don't think alts are mentioned in mainstream media without bitcoin being mentioned either).

A lot of alts are in a bit of a run compared with bitcoin too recently so may be a worse long term investment than bitcoin as they've produced a lot of returns already over the past few months.

NANO or old name XRB, this coin actually has a unique concept in its time, where people get NANO from faucets, but to replace BTC is not possible, even any altcoin will not be able to replace the mother of crypto. Although there are more expensive price than BTC price, those who have an important role in crypto will still be controlled by BTC. I believe that.

BTC still has faucets today as far as I know(but should be a pretty much dead sub-industry), and has had faucets since the early days. Having faucets doesn't necessarily make a certain cryptocurrency unique. It's just that the currency/SoV category is pretty much almost decided already.

Xrp ath was in 2018. Whoever is waiting for a new ath is already waiting for long...

Personally, i have trades and hold many altcoins in the past. I can say it was not worth for me. If I had since my day one in crypto bought 100% bitcoin and holded I might had more money now.

Maybe other people have more luck than me    but I belive altcoins with small marketcap is mostly gambling.

Now, I hold about 85% bitcoin and 15% ethereum

Bitcoin is the lead so eventually every bull run expect this to outperformed its previous ATH it never failed so definitely it will happen again. We cant say for sure that tokens cant come back ot even surpass their ATH. The basis for this is depend too on the project itself and the adoption to cryptocommunity. Eth bnb and who knows other rising L1 could have their gamechange as well.

There's no doubt about that, it has been happening before and that is one of the things i hate about the ideology with alts, most time they got pumped just to attract traffic to buy and pull out at once to go down and everyone investing ran on loss with their shitcoin.

Regardless of what coin they are being identified with, they will always stand on the probability of messing up one day, if you think you can't go for the risk in its higher level, then remain low, steady and normal together with bitcoin and mostly beginners should learn if nothing but this.

Why the categorization? My advice would be to be careful buying any Altcoin in general, never feel too safe in crypto-currency. Although I think the more established Altcoin are more safe than those Altcoin wanting to rise.

Altcoin is a market of risk, and the more you interested the market the more exposed you are to those risk, their are many altcoins right now and that's not the end of it, more are would still be brought in, and if I want to take my chances I rather take them on established coins.

This is the answer to various questions regarding "what crypto to invest".
Because we know very well how the characteristics of altcoins in general, namely: hype - ATH - Dump - are left by the community. It's rare for altcoins to survive and advance beyond ATH before, if any, it's very few.

That's why I agree with you, Bitcoin is a top priority for investing in the crypto industry, especially since this is a bearish market, where it is very suitable to invest in Bitcoin (whether with DCA or not). Followed by ETH and BNB, these two altcoins are indeed the most trusted and especially supported by a fairly strong team and developers, as well as a solid community. Indeed, on the other hand, there are some altcoins that might be hidden gems, but rather than not being so convincing, it is better to avoid them especially if our prospects are long-term.

I suggest a better research if someone wants to invest on altcoins and look at their price history since not every altcoin stay here that long some of them are just started. Taking their chances that they might pump and it did happen but most investors took a chance of it and started to dump that's why most of them didn't last or pump afterwards.

There are worthy altcoins out there if they knew where to find it that has history of potential to grow just like how ETH grow. But for newbies it's always safer to just invest in Bitcoin rather on altcoins.

Read an article a while back, coins have limited fuel once it's extinguished, you can't expect much from it. Hype usually lasts for first year or two until first set roadmap things are achieved, after that it's downward show.

Imo it's ok to invest in alts, just don't get too attached to them. After a while, rotate the profits to BTC. I have blown away lot of money by forever holding on to alts.

Very true, you can look up in historical Coinmarketcap which coins have been famous in 2017 / 2018 and almost all of them have lost compared to BTC.
Most of them even haven't seen their old All-Time-High again, which is a strong sign of decline...

Such coins will fade quickly when the promises made by Altcoin developers are exposed because such coins simply don't deliever.
Some would say: such Altcoins are just hot air.
And it's accurate to say so...

Most altcoins that have experienced previous ATH may not be able to reach the old ATH again because their position may change in the next ATH.
But I think those altcoins still have a chance to get new ATH again in the next altcoin season, although maybe new altcoins or new tokens have more chances.
So the position to see new ATH in altcoins will always change and that's why we have to be careful to see which altcoins have the potential to increase again.
But if you are hesitant to choose an altcoin, you should invest only in BTC to avoid choosing the wrong altcoin so that you can get a bigger profit from ATH from BTC.

like the MATIC right now?
i think MATIC has good potential. it partnered with amazon recently that is why its jumping high. but i might have to wait a little to buy some of it. i only have few hundreds to invest it could just remain BTC or MATIC.  altcoins are rising though so this is a good indicator for the crypto bullrun.

Altcoins have a characteristic that I'd like to call pumpability. There are many factors affecting it, some of which are:
* Age: newer altcoins are easier to pump compared to older ones
* Number of previous pumps: an altcoin that was pumped many times will have a much harder time being pumped again
* Previous pump sizes: an altcoin that had a massive pump (like the ones in 2017) will never have any major pump ever again (eg. ETH)
* Hype: we all know that pumps work based on hyping up the gamblers participating in the pump and dump altcoin market, so any coin that can advertise the coin better and hype it up can get better pumps.
* Market size: it is always easier to have a huge pump in a small altcoin compared to a bigger one. For example it is easier to do a 100x pump of an altcoin worth 10 satoshi compared to another altcoin worth 0.01BTC.

BTC still has faucets today as far as I know(but should be a pretty much dead sub-industry), and has had faucets since the early days. Having faucets doesn't necessarily make a certain cryptocurrency unique. It's just that the currency/SoV category is pretty much almost decided already.

I say unique not because of the features or technology from XRB, but in how to get it. I think XRB at that time gave a more satisfying reward than other faucets with a simpler task than other faucets that had to skip several ads to get it and it was less fun. to be honest, at that time I focused on earning not for holding, so I only focused on XRB because it gave rewards faster than BTC faucets.

Even ethereum didn't perform well like bitcoin in the past peak season so most of us are going to agree with statment BTC is the ultimate investment for everyone. But people will never change until they learn this with their own experience so just let it be cause everyone choose their own way of learning but smart people learn from others mistakes.

You might not really see them having their own bull runs if their volume got drained already and the devs working on it abandon those token so we need to be careful on thinking that low cap tokens can give us wealth since its really dangerous to acquire them since for sure there are other holders who get trap which didn't sell because that token doesn't have volume will dump all they have if they see someone buying it for another round.

So stick on top alts which got huge volume since they are most likely will get huge demand once bitcoin bull run will also happen.

Even top Altcoins are somewhat risky in my opinion.
We just need to look at which coins have been "top Altcoins" in 2017 / 2018.

Most likely, NEO (7), EOS (9), IOTA (10) or NEM (11) have been considered "top Altcoins" back then.

And regarding today's top Altcoins like Solana, Polkadot or Polygon, I'm not sure about their future.
High possibility to see Solana, Polkadot or Polygon going a similar way like EOS, NEO, IOTA or NEM: getting devalued massively...
