This Is probably a stupid question but I need to ask, is there any risk to scan a barcode at store or anywhere to use crypto wallet to make payment?

Can't think of any risks, really. I don't think your phone can execute an action solely based on a QR code, besides some QR codes being shortlinks for opening certain apps and URLs and such. You should be totally fine.

Maybe but its rarely to find a qr code for payment can somehow associated with such scam links. If there was a indirect to another site you should find it suspicious but if you are using a physical store which are well establish I doubt it will be risky to use crypto payment. But make sure always you are dealing with a legit party.

I don’t think you can get hacked if you scan wallet address barcode. It’s not something to be suspicious of, I prefer scanning a wallet barcode to typing the address manually, I have also discovered copy and paste isn’t that safe either as  your clipboard may be compromised, you stand the risk of the digits of your bitcoin address being changed. It’s best you make it a habit to double check the wallet address before making transactions.

Don't think so, because if the qr code is for pay payment. It will not do anything with your mobile. And if they will do these kind of activities so you can concern to the court for justice.

But if you are asking overall QR codes. So it can be risky. Giving a link of an article which I read in May 2022. It is saying that the hackers using the QR codes to steal money.  So be careful...

It is only risky when the scan is done from untrusted sources because there will be a bridge in privacy and quick access to wallet addresses or private keys. The most frequent attacks from untrusted Barcode sources include:
  • Malware Attacks
  • Phishing Attacks
  • It could cost the compromise of the users location
  • Third Parties Could use the avenue to monitor wallets addresses

Guideliness to avoid QR Code Security Threats
  • Install an Antivirus for Additional Security
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication on Your wallets
  • Turn Off Live Location
  • Keep Your Wallet Updated

If the barcode of the stores are scam, actually you can make a complaint on your local court about the scam stores. Let's say the stores are actually honest and trusted, but there's a scammer who change the real barcode with the scam barcode, obviously the stores has a CCTV and it can be used to track the scammer. I will say it's a tiny chance you can get scammed by scam barcode, it's better to check the URL barcode first if you in doubt.

Lol, this isn't a solution to avoid QR code scam, actually it doesn't help anything. Please think before creating post, don't just directly copy paste an article because most of articles are bullshit.

I'm fine with the QR code when paying, but I really need to make sure everything is correct before proceeding with the payment. The same thing you need to do when you make a payment with a QR code so you can avoid mistakes. Some of the reasons for the risks have been mentioned by Zilon, which you should consider.

It is only risky when the scan is done from untrusted sources because there will be a bridge in privacy and quick access to wallet addresses or private keys. The most frequent attacks from untrusted Barcode sources include:

I don't use QR to scan bitcoin addresses, although it seems easy but maybe I should avoid it because I don't like giving a lot of permissions to third party apps like barcode scanners.

Transacting through the internet has some risks attached regardless of the method. Cyber criminals even go as far as replacing QR codes in stores, banners and billboards. Like @Solosanz said it's more secured to use QR code in stores as it'll be easier to catch the criminal that tends to change their QR code to a malicious one.

However, scanning a random Qr code is not advisable because of “quishing and QRLjacking" these two scam techniques are used by cyber criminals to redirect victims into a phishing site after scanning a QR code and trick victims to scan false QRL different from the real one. Once the QRL is scanned it'll retrieve your password and the device will be hijacked.

“ Under the right circumstances, hackers can even use QR codes to initiate a payment from the user's device or force the device to join a certain wifi network"

These are ways to prevent Quishing and QRLJACKING

  • Do not scan a QR code to receive money
  • Avoid logging in to an application or service using a QR code
  • Do not initiate any payment if you are notified about putting any sensitive information like your private keys after scanning a QR code
  • Avoid scanning random QR codes from suspicious sources
  • Do not scan QR codes that you receive via email from unknown source

Am not totally in support of your first two points as an advisable means to secure QR code from getting scammmed, it canbrather bring an opening to let vulnerable for an attack at any level by all means, most antivirus software themselves are malware unknowingly to many, and two factors authentication does not secure your wallet or QR code from being attaked, the best solution is not to stay clear with using QR code and nothing is bad in using such because it's an automated signal transit through direct scan than trying to help the helpless situation to cause the whole thing into confusion.

If you're scanning an "invoice" from a bitcoin wallet (a request with a prefilled amount) make sure you double check its an accurate amount you're sending. There's a chance extra fees could be included too but this is a risk with most payment types.

The greatest risk comes from the qr code not being generated properly (so you don't send to an address the service don't own and then say you have to pay again) or the software you're using to scan it not being trusted - most apps I've used either have inbuilt scanners or trusted APIs with other apps. If you're in doubt of your security, you could always scan it with your camera and copy the text to put in your wallet once you decide it's not malicious (if it's just text for example) - you can normally copy text from most scanners too without clicking it and potentially following a link.

that's easy to ignore when youre a very trusting person and just scan a code without looking how much the price you are about to pay.
there is a local wallet in my country where we can scan QRcodes to pay. i don't really use the QR scan.

just be careful. there was an incident years ago when a TV host shows off his BTC where he didn't mind exposing his QRcode, instantly all his coins were stolen. but this is somewhat a private key qrcode. i think this is it. https://www.entrepreneur.com/business-news/lesson-learned-tv-anchor-shows-off-bitcoin-is-instantly/230537

If you're scanning an "invoice" from a bitcoin wallet (a request with a prefilled amount) make sure you double check its an accurate amount you're sending. There's a chance extra fees could be included too but this is a risk with most payment types.

This is what I actually wanted to mention this scam becomes more in practice these days even I saw few awareness videos about this particular QR code scam just even today so yes we have to be careful when we are scanning a code with pre filled amount but there is no other risk involved with scanning the QR codes cause it doesn't contain any links unless this sent via digital medium.

Depends on a lot of things. Your OS, the apps you use, the permission they require, if they're open-source etc. It is theoretically possible to have a malware installed, that once you scan for a Bitcoin invoice QR code, it switches receiving addresses. Theoretically again, it is entirely possible, if your machine is compromised, to scan for an invoice, make sure that the receiving address is correct, and then have yourself ripped off during sending (because it'll sign a transaction funding the attacker's address).

Yes, Absolutely there's a risk attached, if the site has some Malware affliction, or the site has enablement of Phishing links, your device is likely to be affected, maybe with Virus or something else, there are cases where wallet eventually get exposed, Which is one reason we need to be extremely careful about the site we connect our financial wallet source to, Always double check before carrying out such activity

There is always risk associated when we talk about something digital and the barcodes security can be compromised if they are replaced with the fake one's as others pointed out but they will have some malware that will attack you indirectly as looking for wallets or installing keywares so whenever you type password it give hackers access to it.

So as always advisable make the payments on a trusted source or best is to have limited funds in your wallet that you are using for making payments and top-up whenever needed so the risk is minimal in that case.

This Is probably a stupid question but I need to ask, is there any risk to scan a barcode at store or anywhere to use crypto wallet to make payment?
I think yes
I've  heard a story about a local bitcoin ATM been hacked on a blog though I can't recall which bjt this question .are me think of the possibility  and I think is  possible to hack payment QR codes a d im sure that this internet fraudsters are so very good at trying the impossible and we've had of cases of hacked wallets and I think payment codes aren't different.

Whatever the case maybe, I think the store should be responsible  for a payment code hack as it should be their responsibility  to make sure that it is always their responsibility to keep it safe.

I can't think of different risk when you scan a barcode or a Qr code because no matter how many times you scan the barcode or Qr code the result will always be the same unless the barcode is tampered, changed or edited. If I provide a barcode right now and try to scan it then the result will always be the same. I don't know if this is considered as risk but I'll share it,  I can only say that if there's a malware that can change the information/data when you send a payment either scanning a qr code/barcode or when you copy/paste then there's a risk.

There a scan feature in some centralized device and each of the figures if the given information have a different symbols or marks in the QR code this could be use as another way of security too, I've been trying this a lot into a different platform and it works well on me all the time. I guess the possible risk here is the barcode gets change by a suspicious hacker into it's address.

Well, think it poses more risk than the ordinary address would. The difference is, address takes much time to input correctly and even at that, the address could be switched on an already compromised device else, you would do fine and other cases that involves manual writhing of the address, you could get some characters wrong given by its length. Still, ther is more safety in addresses than barcodes.
A shifty merchant can’t switch the barcodes or perhaps input a malware so it doesn’t work on the device and you look out for other means but, your device has been infiltrated and head on, the damages can start happening there after.
