If I go to McDonalds and try to ask for a discount, they will first offer me an alternative (hamburger instead of bigmac), but then will simply say "next" and cancel my order. You're right about that, to be honest I hardly ever haggle when buying something from a small merchant. I prefer to shop at traditional markets, because I think it can help their economy. If we look at it as a whole, we will get a price comparison that is not too big, it can even be said to be cheaper than modern markets or luxury places. They are running a business which it would really be just normal that they would go for profits but it would depend where they are making the margin too far off or something just that right.
There's no way on finding it rather than on trying out to make some comparison but it do really sucks when merchants or business owners tending to go with the current condition

Business will always continue regardless if the economy is bad, so if one can’t afford the rental, then he should start to move and find cheaper place that he can afford, and not that he will ask a bargain price from his landlord because it’s his own problem and not with the landlord anymore. If everyone is already having a hard time financially, why would the merchants even accept your plea of bargaining anyway? This might even put their business in peril and may even affect their funds for their business. It just isn't making any logic at all to bargain when everything is turning to shit. You can always try, but do not expect that people will be so welcoming of how you try to bargain when they themselves aren't doing well enough even if they are supplying the goods.

You got a discount for a coffee in McDonalds ? Or in a local coffee shop? As McDonalds is a franchise and all the prices, menus, software is negotiated with head office, it is impossible to get a discount there. Their cash desk PC dont have a button for discount. If you have paid less than it is stated in a menu, then McDonalds employee has put his own money into cash desk. If it is a local coffee - the owner can afford to give a discount, he controls price policy himself.

What are the motives to give you a discount, to bargain? Why should people even do that? Only because you want to pay a lower price? If you bargain because you are short of money then this is one thing. But if you just want to pay less than others, then you are scrooge. Why you think you are special and have to pay less, while others pay full price?

You can bargain at the flea market and it's worth doing because the outdoor vendors often charge very high prices if we don't bargain, we might end up spending more than its actual price. But in the supermarket you can't bargain with them, the product is already listed and the price is fixed.

Not necessary to all of the things and also depends on your approach to them If you have a work, then your boss paid you less than you want your salary be, what would you feel? We are all fighting to survive, be fair.
