We are in a period were there is inflation, high cost of power and fuel and everybody including manufacturers are also feeling the pains. The best thing to do for now is to seek for cheaper alternative of any product you consume. My children are now consuming locally produced food instead of expensive company manufactured baby-food/cereals.I had to move out of my bigger accommodation to a smaller place because I could no longer comfortably afford it. But this doesn't write-off the fact that we should bargain for the best prices.

There’s no wrong actually if you ask for a lower price, but never ask from small stall owners or entrepreneurs because obviously, they are also feeling the inflation that you are feeling too. It’s okay for those big time business owners but for the small ones, it’s their only means for survival so always be reasonable enough. Ask for cheaper prices sometimes, but never do it all the time.

The reason I inquired about where you live is because in certain countries--far, far away from where I live--haggling is part of the culture.  If anyone in the US just asked their landlord to lower their rent because they were trying to get a cheaper rate, it'd pretty much be impossible.  Renters usually sign a lease when they rent, and any negotiations have to be done before it's signed, not when the renter suddenly feels like they're being overcharged.

But hey, as they say, you do you.  When you live in a country where most things are purchased at big box retailers or online, it's not feasible to do anything but pinch pennies through budgeting and buying smart.

On the contrary, if in a situation where you are a supplier, a seller, when someone has the same bargaining behavior as you, how will you handle it? I'm not saying haggling is bad, but you have to understand that those same owners are going through the same crisis as we are. If we buy a loaf for 2 dollars, they will also buy a loaf for 2 dollars, if everyone is asking for a discount like you, the seller will lose a lot. The solution in this inflationary period in my opinion is nothing better than trying to work part-time, save a part, don't spend unnecessary things and if possible find yourself an investment.

People we buy products/services from are also impacted by the economic situation so I don't think bargaining could even get us somewhere really, especially in OP's cases where a lease is signed beforehand. You're right about that, to be honest I hardly ever haggle when buying something from a small merchant. I prefer to shop at traditional markets, because I think it can help their economy. If we look at it as a whole, we will get a price comparison that is not too big, it can even be said to be cheaper than modern markets or luxury places. They are running a business which it would really be just normal that they would go for profits but it would depend where they are making the margin too far off or something just that right.

You got a discount for a coffee in McDonalds ? Or in a local coffee shop? As McDonalds is a franchise and all the prices, menus, software is negotiated with head office, it is impossible to get a discount there. Their cash desk PC dont have a button for discount. If you have paid less than it is stated in a menu, then McDonalds employee has put his own money into cash desk. If it is a local coffee - the owner can afford to give a discount, he controls price policy himself.

What are the motives to give you a discount, to bargain? Why should people even do that? Only because you want to pay a lower price? You are very correct, everybody wants to buy commodities at a very cheap rate but have you ever considered if the cost of production is cheap. We are in a period were there is inflation, high cost of power and fuel and everybody including manufacturers are also feeling the pains. The best thing to do for now is to seek for cheaper alternative of any product you consume. My children are now consuming locally produced food instead of expensive company manufactured baby-food/cereals.I had to move out of my bigger accommodation to a smaller place because I could no longer comfortably afford it. But this doesn't write-off the fact that we should bargain for the best prices.

Governments are regulators and has an SRP to implement for most of our commodities and basic needs. They can subsidize those products that are increasing and like non stop price hikes that's happen.

They can apply this and work on it for the fuel prices. Oil products have been the worst in terms of price hikes because it has non stoply increasing and if it's going to roll back, they're lesser than what has been the increased price.

And the sad thing about this is that you can't do what OP is suggesting and to ask for a bargain price, it doesn't go like that for products like oil or petroleum.

I disagree with the word anything because you can't, yes some places you can negotiate and reduce the price but most of the basic needs like groceries, veggies, meat are fixed price everywhere even if its a roadside shop the price is fixed.

The reason I inquired about where you live is because in certain countries--far, far away from where I live--haggling is part of the culture.  If anyone in the US just asked their landlord to lower their rent because they were trying to get a cheaper rate, it'd pretty much be impossible.  Renters usually sign a lease when they rent, and any negotiations have to be done before it's signed, not when the renter suddenly feels like they're being overcharged.

No, I'm not asking for a discount when I go to places like that. I'm buying at full price. It would be absurd to bargain anyway. It would be unethical to engage in such issues in corporate places. Bargaining is more often done in boutique shops. It doesn't matter what the food, drink, clothing product is. I bargain on every product I can get sold.

Bargaining on items won't always work especially if you do it on the mall where the item is fixed price but if you do it on a boutique shops it might work since you are actually asking for a discount with the owner of the shop. That's the difference of buying and bargaining things or food and even the gas you can't ask for a discount. For big time merchants, you can always ask them for lower prices, but never expect that they will grant your request all the time. Business is a business, regardless if the economy is growing or dropping. However, for small business owners, I think it’s never right to ask for a lower option of price, just be reasonable enough. It is really just normal for a business on at least having some profit and they would be normally basing up on the price on which they had able to buy and make out some little bump in price for profits.

25% for profit isn't small.  I don't think that there is any  vendor that will settle of less than 25% profit. So I do not think that they will just do a little bump on the price.
