How to update alt coin to follow up the bitcoin core version?

So it seems latest bitcoin version is 23.0

and my coin is 0.16.3 (https://github.com/BitcoinEssence/bitcoinessence),

then how to update (upgrade) core source to follow up bitcoin?

And how to integrate(?) it with current blockchain network? (no one mining now though)
