I have an idea for a new consensus protocol and i would like to get some feedback.
Instead of producing hashes via computational power validators produce hashes by a fixed amount of coins for example 50 coins (a block reward).
Nodes create a pool of hashes and select the smallest one just like in proof of work, but it doesn't necessarily have to start with zeros.
The winner puts their "proof" on block that will be accepted by others. If network produces two valid blocks the right chain is the smallest proof.
The hash is called "ticket" and consist of HashPrevBlock, PubKey, Signature.
This way it is easy to verify the amount of coins. Every ticket hash changes but validators need to put your coins in different addresses to have more tickets.
But I can't tell if it increases the chance of winning given the magnitude of possibilities.
However by simply having more coins you are removing tickets from other possible validators.
I don't know if it works yet. I created a repository with a simple python script that shows the idea. It makes sense to me.

Everything besides "Validators must hold at least one block reward" that you briefly describe in Github is Proof-of-Work. How's this mechanism ensuring luck, to be named Proof-of-Luck? Let me catch you: if instead of computational power there's interaction with system's units, it's Proof-of-Stake.

This is no different from a (cryptographically secure) random number generator. In fact, you might as well just replace the entire PoW consensus with calls to getrandom() or the OpenSSL equivalent and use the result as in index into a list of block hashes, if this is what you're trying to do.

If I understand it correctly every node will be able to participate with its random numbers. What would stop an attacker then to just get a very high amount of nodes so that he can have a much higher chance to get the ticket?

Judging from what OP wrote, I think he doesn't consider it a problem. It might be encouraged to do so since you need a fixed amount of coins to get tickets and collecting more coins remove the competition. You just need money to control the network basically. I don't know why but this reminds me of a gacha game since the richer you are the chance to get the reward increase.

That's the idea. An infinitely simpler PoS that uses solid properties of PoW. It does not take into consideration quantity of coins and coin age. Name doesn't matter.
"Infinitely simpler than PoS", as if PoS is complicated.  Roll Eyes

I still don't get how are these "solid properties of PoW" even used in the process of securing the network. Do large coin holders have advantage, yes or no? If yes, it's Proof-of-Stake.

You just need money to control the network basically. I don't know why but this reminds me of a gacha game since the richer you are the chance to get the reward increase.
It's also called fiat currency, but it's unfortunately deliberately more complicated than a Proof-of-Stake shitcoin.

If it will be "the smallest one", then it will "necessarily have to start with zeros", just because that's how "less than" operator works.

Where there are two valid blocks on the same height, both are treated as valid, and nodes are waiting for next blocks to resolve that. Then it is simply Proof of Stake: by having 51% of coin supply, you can control it forever. And it is not that hard in times, where there are huge exchanges that accumulate a lot of coins from many users. Instead of out ruling computational operations why not, like actual Proof of luck, initiate the usage of a spec of computer like Intel SGX that allows Trusted execution environment. That'll prevent attackers from controlling the blockchain within the Trusted execution environment threshold. Also to ease energy and CPU cycle, the TEE (Trusted execution environment) allows a participant to wait for the expected time to pass during transaction verification without doing any work unlike in proof of work where the participant is expected to do work while waiting for an enforced sufficient amount of time to pass. This will also keep your consensus secured and different from POS.

But in practice it is not, and that's why computing power is used, instead of counting nodes, keys, signatures, or whatever.

Waiting is not a solution, because then you create a treasure for designing and producing some new compatible hardware, that will always run. And because that hardware will produce more coins, it will dominate soon. Also because it could be programmed to fake timestamps and produce longer chains in advance, and then just publish them with some delay.

If you have one ticket per node, then the solution is to use any software that will emulate running many nodes. What about one user owning 10 machines? What about one user mining with virtual machines, that will pretend nodes are owned by different people? Also, I remember this Luck altcoin that relied on two phases, where people were trying to re-design mining. You can have more tickets, but it is not guaranteed that you will increase your chances of winning.

Obviously it will increase your chance of winning. If it is really random numbers I will have a 1% chance if I own 1 % nodes and 50% chance if I own 50% of the nodes. Still there is not really a difference to PoS then, if I need the coins to have the node.

I did some tests and it does increase the chance. I know PoS is not well accepted, but this proposal aims to simplify the code and consequently make it more secure and more decentralized since the requirement to run a node would be lower.
The issue with PoS is inherent. There is no way to fix PoS. No matter if or how you make it more decentralized, that's not the issue. PoS is inherently flawed. This means that to fix it, you'd have to change it to the point that it's not PoS anymore.

If something is simpler, but not fully specified, then it won't be better. For example, you use Python, so you don't care about data types and their sizes. But they are crucial when sent to the network, because they have to be received on the other end. I don't think so. You put your signature into hashed parts quite easily, without realizing, how many ECDSA operations has to be performed by each device. You put strings like "Alice" and "Bob" as sample signatures, without realizing, that even if you include some library, and put real signatures there, then still, that part will be quite complex. And if signatures will be hashed, then you will sooner or later need to separate it. I wonder how you will implement SegWit in your model. Not to mention things like Schnorr signatures, or any kind of joining many signatures into one.

You assume that there will be no prior communication. But what if there will be attackers that will communicate? That changes a lot. Because hashing is not a magic process that produces random numbers just like that. They are pseudorandom, and if you want to attack, you can use that determinism to perform some actions. But if some smart programmers will discover that, then they could change it to try more than once, and reach better results by optimizing some parameters, and by sending only the best results, and pretending they hit it during the first try.

There is a reason, why chainwork is not measured per block hash, but per difficulty instead. In your network, it is possible to reorganize many blocks with one strong block. And it is dangerous, because if it is difficulty-based, then more blocks are needed, and then triggering difficulty change is needed, and that requires much more power (and there are limits, so the difficulty can only raise or drop four times, it is unlikely for a single block to alter the average time during two weeks period, also because the time of the block has to be within some range, and be higher than the median time of the past 11 blocks).

If you will have no nonce, then it will be picked artificially. Public keys are random, they can be used as a nonce. The same for signatures, you have R-value, that is just some ECDSA point, so it has the same properties as any other public key. And the destination address can be also used as a nonce.

What is the time of the block? 10 minutes? So, 30 minutes can be reversed? In Bitcoin we had cases like Value Overflow Incident, and that required reversing hours of work. That kind of checkpoint means that your network could be easily splitted just by producing three blocks, and the probability described in the whitepaper for that is around 1% if the attacker has 10% hashrate. So, on average, a huge pool with 10% domination, could try to split the network once per 100 blocks.

The problem with generating random numbers is that if there is not perfect communication between nodes, there will be two winners. Using hashes always has only one winner, even if the network produces two blocks, the smaller hash will be considered the correct block.
For the ticket to be considered valid, it is necessary to hold 50 coins in the address that will be used to make the ticket.
I think it is also possible to use multisignatures to do a kind of delegation. Using the bitcoin example, it is only possible to have 420000 tickets.
The "ticket" is actually a message that contains the previous ticket hash, public key and signature. So it is not possible to fabricate a block in a way that manipulates the result. As it is not possible to predict the signatures so it is not possible to predict the winner in advance.
Ethereum's implementation is very complex.

This is a hybrid PoW/PoS

Basically you are using "proof of coins" to weight your mining power.

I guess it would be useful to prevent miners from dumping their coins but other than that it just reduces decentralization since buying a miner does not put you on equal footing with a rich person who has a miner.

And yes even with this idea it would still be using asics to mine.

What happens if we store the proof of work as a transaction and use the proof of stake algorithm to select the winner.
So, transaction mining with extra steps? What's the point of having both Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Stake, when only Proof-of-Stake is used in voting? Unless it isn't, which at this case will neither make sense, because you now have both miners and stakers, with the former being stakers as well.

We can select multiple validators per block and give preference to blocks that contain proofs of work.
What's the problem with Proof-of-Work again?

When the block reward ends or is no longer profitable the network will continue to operate without problems.

By moving proof of work to transactions, it could weaken the work in the block headers, and would complicate the whole block validation. It is better to use Merged Mining on block headers, and check those 80-byte headers in your network, then you will mine Bitcoin and your coins at the same time, so those headers will remain the strongest source of work.

The block reward will end by design. By having limited supply, coins will not be destroyed by inflation in the future. There are two sides: supply and demand. If demand will be too low, then messing with the supply won't solve it. Creating more coins will cause inflation, so existing coins will be worth less. And burning more coins will create only speculation, not real usage (also, altcoins that burn a lot of coins usually do that, because they produced too many coins first, so they constantly solve problems they created by their own decisions).

By issuing a proof of work transaction you get a "ticket" that is valid forever.
Unless someone provides more work than you did.

In bitcoin, miners "lose" their energy after mining a block.
And what's the difference with a merged Proof-of-Work with Proof-of-Stake? You still have energy that's used to do hashing.

Miners will not need to raise fees when the block reward goes to zero.

Not really, because you usually don't want to overwrite everything. Also, getting 10 blocks with difficulty one is easier than getting a single block with difficulty 10. If you have some smaller unit for measuring hashes, then it is profitable to include more hashes, and it is more likely that the sum will be greater than one single hit. You can easily check that on your CPU: first, use the regtest difficulty, and try to mine a block with difficulty one. And compare, how fast you will get a lot of blocks with very small difficulty, that will sum into one.

And that's the problem: that makes attacking easier, because you can use that "ticket" to reorganize the chain. Also, that allows offline mining, and could be dangerous, because then your system is widely opened to a "deus ex machina attack", when suddenly some miner is lucky, and can reorganize everything.
