Protests have broken out at Foxconn’s vast iPhone factory in Zhengzhou, central China, as footage circulating on social media shows workers clashing with baton-wielding riot police and hazmat-suited officials. The protests started after workers, who have been under strict covid lockdown for weeks, learned bonus payments would be delayed, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Apple announced earlier this month that it expected lower shipments of premium iPhone 14 models due to disruptions created by the covid lockdowns at the same Foxconn facility. Zhengzhou, known locally as “iPhone city,” is home to an estimated 200,000 workers who are responsible for the vast majority of all iPhone production.

The Wall Street Journal reports that protests started on Tuesday evening near Foxconn employee accommodations at the Zhengzhou facility. Foxconn’s strict covid controls have reportedly isolated its employees, forcing them to live and work on-site (with limited food and supplies) in order to prevent further outbreaks in Zhengzhou. Since October, many workers have escaped from the locked-down facility, leading Foxconn to promise incentives like higher salaries and bonuses to retain staff.

Video footage captured on Wednesday shows hundreds of workers protesting at the campus, chanting “give us our pay” while surrounded by riot police and people in hazmat suits. Livestream footage later that night saw protests escalating, with workers chanting “Defend our rights! Defend our rights!” as they confronted police officers, according to the Agence France-Presse news agency. “Foxconn never treats humans as humans,” said another person in a social media video at the scene.

Other workers captured on live streams said they were protesting over food shortages in addition to the delayed payments. “They changed the contract so that we could not get the subsidy as they had promised. They quarantine us but don’t provide food,” said one Foxconn worker during a live stream as reported by the BBC. “If they do not address our needs, we will keep fighting.”

Most of the video footage has already been removed but The Wall Street Journal reports it has corroborated events shown in the videos with workers at the site. The hashtag “Foxconn Riots” was also seemingly censored on the Chinese social media platform Weibo by Wednesday night.

....

The foxconn facility in china has been a site of controversy for many years. Years ago, there was a series of worker suicides which resulted in foxconn installing nets to save the lives of workers who jumped from top floors. Critics have compared foxconn to worker concentration camps. Due to workers residing exclusively inside the foxconn facility for lengthy periods of time while working. While they do travel home to spend time with their families, I'm not exactly certain what the timetable looks like.

The most recent controversy apparently stems from workers not receiving promised pay and in some cases being denied food.

I'm not certain if any concessions or changes will arise as a result of this. The closest example I can think of are the servile wars of rome. Where slaves rose up in mass rebellion. It is possible that china will eventually push people too far. And we might witness a similar uprising. Although, it is difficult to compare current era society, to past era civilization. Perhaps people have changed and are no longer capable of rebellion?

People are always capable of rebellion. I'd hope the International markets are able to provide better conditions for Chinese citizens though or they'll probably see a lot of migration to other areas.

I'm surprised these repeated reports haven't been bad enough for Apple's image and made them buy the facility instead of having it owned by another company. I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years we start to see phones that can be assembled by the buyer (same goes for most other items too that are currently made in sweatshops). At the same time, these people might need these jobs, due to the huge population many facilities closing down might do worse for food shortages and living conditions than is already being done by a huge company.

Even animals can rebel if you don't give them food after a laborious day. These workers have put in a lot of energy and suffered from imprisonment and you refuse to pay them what was bargained and now you want to change the contract agreement, that's inhuman. When anyone is pushed to the wall, such person would react regardless of the consequences.

But I am sure the Chinese government can handle it because of their autocratic style of government. The leaders of the protest would be targeted and even arrested and some imprisoned just like it happened in Hong Kong. But it's very encouraging that Chinese citizens are becoming brave, damning the threats they are standing for their right.

It's like slavery in modern times with the lure of incentives that never reach their wallets, this is beyond humanity, they are locked up in production camps, they eat very little, and must hardly breathe fresh air. I think they are like robots in the company.

In terms of work productivity, it will be very difficult for workers to produce optimal and good products because ecological factors and living ecosystems are not fulfilled because it will cause stress, and this will greatly affect the quality of workers' production.

I hope that the Chinese government can provide the right policies for workers in Zhengzhou, because we realize that currently the cost of living is very expensive. And this should be a lesson for the world of work so that something like this doesn't happen again.

I wonder how this news escaped out of China!! Chinese government doesn't like when such news goes out of their country because that shows their real face! They murdered thousands of Muslims and the world is still trying to gather proof. China is a country that doesn't believe in human rights. It's great that Apple is moving out the production from China.

People are always capable to start a rebellion. But most of such rebellious protests do not end well. I mean what unarmed people can do against a military!

Sad but not surprising.
In the 2010's I recall there was a scandal about Foxconn unusual suicide rates among their employees and workers, it was so serious the have to install anti-suicide nets near the base of their buildings and other measures that only serve as a proof of the inhumane condition these people have to go through to satisfy the technological transnational companies they work for. It is truly a new kind of slavery.

We only can hope they get a better treat as humans, but it is unlikely considering we are talking about China.

There is no hope for them in this life. Sad but true.

I hope it isn't true.  It may start with China, but their influence on the rest of the world is growing.  They're the template for how the WEF wants other countries to be.  If their citizens don't push back and start causing real problems, this might be the future for all of us.  Anyone seeing the videos coming out of China should be terrified.  Drones everywhere, police everywhere, people running to escape public venues when a single individual turns up a positive covid test.  We're watching the Chinese fight for the future freedom of mankind in my opinion.  I hope they continue to lead the fight and stand up against these odds.

This is why the US is an example of strength in freedom. It's about time that the people of the rest of the nations of the world wake up to the value of getting guns.
